Welcome back aviramof. The option to disable auto arrangement of icos in windows 7 rc has bean removed and can not be disabled except on the desktop. There are no workarounds for this.

Thi feature has bean removed for RTM as well.

sick.. the title to this article is a little bit misleading becouse i am familiar with this method.

I think he wants to be able to sort icons in folders manually and not by type or alphabetically from what i think he meant by placing an icon in a folder where he chooses to like on the desktop he can put an icon on the left bottom middle wherever.

You though are talking about how all files and folders should have the same view that 7 always screws up even though you select it - icons should all be the same size when selecting apply to all folders after you configure one folder but 7 allways ignores that.

    sick?

There really is no way in explorer at this point and you are not the first one to bring this up. If it can be done through the regisrty someone already would have solved it so it's probably hard coded in explorer and can't be modified for now.

I too have the same problem. I want to be able to disable the Sort option within Windows Explorer so that I can arrange icons anyway I want. This can be done in all previous versions of Windows, including Vista. Why has this option been taken away from users? I do not always want to sort the files in a sequence. I sometimes like to put space between files and then group them the way I want. It makes it easier for me to find the files I want. Hopefully, there will be a Windows 7 tweak that will give us back the option to disable auto arrange, or auto sort, or whatever they are calling it in Windows 7. On the desktop I can arrange the files and folders anyway I want. I want the same ability within the Windows Explorer.

the basic idea of having a computer is that you can arrange your files and folers how you like, everybody has the own way, in all the other window systems you can do this .In windows 7 microsoft stated that they have made it easyer to personlize your computer, how can this be so as they have left out the basic function of allowing YOU to arrange your file how you want.have had to reinstall the dreaded Vista and have ask microsoft to refund me my money for windows 7 as it does not do what it say it would do

You can put your files anywhere you want.

You can even add folders to the "libraries" view spo you could have all your files in (say) d:\myfiles and have THAT show in "Libratries\documents"

You could have your Ipod plugged in and have the music show in "Libraries\Music" as well as showing all the mp3's you have on F:\MyMusicFiles

You just need to actually TRY windows 7 before tossing it.

I don't know how to break this to you, but Windows 7 is effectively a cleaned up version of Vista. Sure, there are some changes under the hood, and it runs faster, but most basic user-interface functions are virtually identical. Poke around a bit, and I suspect you will discover how to do everything you were doing with Vista in Windows 7.

no I am not opposed to it as a function, but I want to arrange my files  in my folders on my computer how I want and that is what WINDOWS 7 said you can do  ......................... what is the point in having a program which does away with this basic right!!
windows 95, windows me,windows xp, even the dreaded Vista let you do this. all it is a basic function that has been left out of windows 7  but one which goes to the heart of make your computer  personlized.

    hi,
from what you are saying is I just gone out and bought windows 7 for £144.99 so that Microsoft could sell me a cleaned up version of windows Vista which they should have put right in the first place, only now to find that they have made another mistake in taking out the basic principle of allowing you to personalize your own computer by not letting you move around your files with in a personalize folder, how much will it cost me for them to rectify THIS MISTAKE silly me for believing all the hype and going out to buy windows7

You can arrange files the same way you can in any modern Windows version.

Click Organize...Layout and make sure Menu Bar is checked.

I no all this, but you CAN NOT move your files around in a folder how you want them to be as you CAN IN ANY OTHER VERSION OF WINDOWS. therefore you can not personlize your computer...............this function has been left out of all of windows 7 range, which comes back to my point why would I want to buy something will not let me do the BASIC ACT of letting personlize my files and folers how I want too,as you know everybody arrangews there files and folder how they like that why it is called a personlzed computer

    Hi

I don't quite understand what you are complaining about.
I have been using Windows 7 for months and I don't see any difference as to how it organizes files and folders then any other version of Windows, as the previous poster said.

Open Windows Explored, create what ever folder you want, create of copy your files into it.
If you want the files of folders in a certain order name them accordingly.  I.E. for Folders 01 Photos, 02 Music etc.

Windows 7 certainly works better for me then any operating system I have ever used from Microsoft and I go all the way back to DOS.

I think that you are misunderstanding how it works.
I know that I have never liked the fact that Windows has default folders such as My Documents, when I go to fix one of my friends computers I discover that every document they ever saved is in the same folder, maybe as many as a thousand or more collected over years!

I try in vain to get them to organize their stuff so that they have some idea where the stuff is but they insist in just using the basic folders for everything.

    Mike

I've been working with PC's since 1980, and this is the first I’ve heard the acronym defined as "personalized computer". ;)

PC stands for "Personal Computer" meaning not a main frame and not a dumb terminal.

You cannot "move files around in a folder" in ANY version of windows in our terminology.

Since we are unable to grasp what you are meaning, perhaps you can give a detailed description instead of a "i can't so what I want" message.

We get that you think something has changed, but believe us, nothing has changed - it's something in your perception, so if you can help us understand what you want, we can help you achieve it.

I know what he wants and it is to rearrange the files in a folder in any order he wants, not alphabetically.

I disagree that this is a "basic right" as he says.  It is a feature, one of many, that Microsoft has chosen to remove from Windows 7. No where did I read that Windows 7 allows you to do and customize anything you want.

I personally like Windows 7 and although I wished that certain things could be different, I don't view it as my right to have them so.

I think I know what he is talking about.  He wants to arrange his files 'freestyle'.  He doesn't want them snapping into alignment.  In Vista, you could do this by unchecking Auto Arrange option under View .  Windows 7 doesn't have this option under View.

In Xp you could, if you display icons, rearange the folders/files free style in any folder and not have it auto arrange.

Yes, I agree with everyone on this. When I tried to shuffle some pictures around in a folder I thought for sure I was doing something wrong. Being able to drag icons around in the folder at random is an important feature for me. It does not make any sense at all to not have it. This is the only problem I have had with Win 7. Everything else is working much better than Vista. The new television ads all state how this OS was designed from user input. Hope your listening to everyone on this one MS.

I was too busy to respond to this yesterday, so am revisiting it now.  Originally the post also include the comment "Who do you work for?", which was a slight upon my motivations.  As it stands the comments "You must be joking" and "Only a mad man would disagree" are a slight upon my sanity and competence.  Such comments are unworthy ones on a technical board, surely?

"Why on earth would you suggest removing the ability to manually arrange icons in folders?"

I haven't suggested that at all.  Numerous people have complained about the removal of that capability, and they have my sympathies and agreement.  I don't personally have need to manually arrange items in folders.  I adhere to file and folder naming protocols which result in the alphanumeric sorting to be adequate for all my needs.  but many other people don't adhere to such naming protocols, and have need to manually arrange.  I'm not arguing that they shouldn't be able to do this, and haven't suggested that they shouldn't be able to do this.

The post above was specific to the topic post, which is a thoroughly bewildering one.

"How on on earth could it be quicker than moving the unwanted icons(s) out of the way?"

You've stated that the intent is to 'select' two of the three items in the folder.  Compare the following:

    My suggestion -

Click on first item to select
Press and hold CTRL key, and click on second item to select it also.

    Your suggestion -

Drag intervening item aside, to another position within the folder.
Click on first item to select
Shift-click or Ctrl-click on second item to select it also.

You ask "How could it be quicker, but the reality is that your method simply adds another step to the process!

    1. Check that your processer has the Virtual Assist Technology or whatever the ____ they call it
link and app available from microsoft. Search under Windows 7 Virtual XP
    2. If it has then congrats, I reckon about 5% of laptops have this chip/feature. Mine doesnt.
    3. Run virtual XP on your Win7
    4. Realise you're essentially using WinXp and what's the point of using Win7
    5. Uninstall Win7 and revert back to XP/Vista
    6. Spend another 2 days of your life rebuilding ur computer
    7. Have a cup of tea. Thanks Microsoft - you've done it again!

I've actually had this major problem with Windows 7 as well, but it was not compelling for me enough to swtich back to Vista (not that I really had problems with Vista fortunately). But yeah, it's a MAJOR flaw with Windows 7. On a Mac you can reorgzied your files and rearrange them in whatever order you like, and on every other previous version of Windows you can do this. Someone responded on here a few weeks ago when I was complaining about the same exact thing and said that you can do that in Libraries, but for me, I still can't rearrange my folders in whatever order that I prefer----and it REALLY makes organizing photos and videos---and everything else in between, especially difficult. I think this is a major step back. MS should really re-add the drag-and-drop functionality of being able to move your folders and files around however you want. I've been using Windows Live Mail for a while, and they even removed that drag-and-drop funcationality with the upgrade to Windows 7 as well.
I mean, c'mon Microsoft! You finally were pulling even with Apple's OSX, after all these years, but this lack of drag-and-drop functionality for folders is pulling us back by lightyears!!

Anyone else having this same problem but unable to get any help from the MS guys on here??
  • Thursday, November 12, 2009 3:40 AMAscendant_Sith Users MedalsUsers MedalsUsers MedalsUsers MedalsUsers Medals

Actually, not true. There is virtually no drag-and-drop functionality whatsoever for rearranging YOUR folders in different order with Windows 7. They only give you pre-determined settings like alphabetically, by date, etc, rather than by letting YOU decide how to rearrange them. This is the only serious gripe I have with Windows 7----and it's a major problem---especially when Mac OSX and EVERY PREVIOUS version of Windows enabled you to do this.
  • Thursday, November 12, 2009 3:44 AMAscendant_Sith Users MedalsUsers MedalsUsers MedalsUsers MedalsUsers Medals

Yeah, it's like they removed the drag-and-drop functionality of being able to rearrange YOUR folders however YOU desire so they can build it into Windows 8. This is really bad, and the ONLY major problem that I have with Windows 7, especially since Vista and other version of Windows allowed you to do this----even Mac OSX. It's so basic that it's rediculous that they disabled this.
  • Thursday, November 12, 2009 3:49 AMAscendant_Sith Users MedalsUsers MedalsUsers MedalsUsers MedalsUsers Medals

I have the same exactl problem Karl. I've been using Windows since 3.1. There is virtually no drag-and-drop functionality within Windows 7 that enables you to move around FOLDERS and rearrange them the way YOU, the end-user, want to. This functionality was there in Vista. It has nothing to do with the Libraries, as somebody on here from MS told me earlier. It's just not there. And nobody is opposed at all for Win7 ALLOWING you to organize your folders alphabetically or whatever other settings are there for you to select from. It's just it really makes things MUCH, MUCH easier to rearrange and reorganize them on YOUR terms, however, YOU want to.

  • Thursday, November 12, 2009 3:52 AMAscendant_Sith Users MedalsUsers MedalsUsers MedalsUsers MedalsUsers Medals

If Windows 7 no longer allows that, how the ____ else are you supposed to be able to reorganize and rearrange YOUR folders that make any sense to you? Not everybody benefits at all from them being automatically alphabetized, etc.
  • Thursday, November 12, 2009 3:55 AMAscendant_Sith Users MedalsUsers MedalsUsers MedalsUsers MedalsUsers Medals

And what was so wrong with Vista anyway? Unless you're running a really underpowered machine, I don't see what all the people were complaining about. The alert messages you can disable, you can cancel out the sidebar, I just don't get it.

For someone to say "the dreaded Vista," I just can't relate, I'm sorry. At least Vista allowed you to drag 'n drop folder and rearrange/reorganize them in whatever order that YOU wanted. And for me, that's HUGE. Try organizing folders like pictures, that actually have names to them, along with album names----now you can only order them by date or alphabetically---which makes no sense in such a scenario that I just described.

About the sadistic quality of the touters I totally agree. About an optional feature, well this isn't really a feature but a main component that has bean on every windows operating system since the begining of windows operating systems and is now present on MAC OS and linux as well. I'm not much of a righter but I know with a MAC I can arrange icons as I wish, with any version of windows up untill 7 nothing was stopping me and also with linux. I speak for myself and frustrated computer users not the corporations and thier absurd reasoning for the limitiations they build into their products who morraly I can not work for.

Yes, it may be an optional feature but remember some misguided group of fellows decided to removed invert selection from beta 7000 causing widespread panic and the feature was restored in rc 7100 and RTM 7600? Invert selection I do believe is non- user configurable. It was only restored to the menu bar not the organize tab. People, this is not simplification. This is a conspiracy!

It should be left up to me if I want my Conspiracy folder to sit next to my Goat folder and have them both off to the side O.o

But all joking aside who in their right mind would this this is a good idea?  Could it truly have just been forgotten about??

As their advertising said, windows 7 was my idea damn it but in my idea I could turn off auto-arrange!  Why did they mess up my idea?!

My only suggestion is what many people are doing right now and that is to refuse to support M$ by not upgrading to the new version and to use the older more complete versions. Wait untill Micosoft earns public support by producing a fully functional and complete OS as has done in the past.

"I sometimes like to put space between files and then group them the way I want."

Silly human, of course the computer knows best! You will just have to wait for Windows 8 where there will be some half-baked method of moving an icon that involves 17 mouse-clicks and typing into a command prompt.

"I have been using Windows 7 for months and I don't see any difference as to how it organizes files and folders then any other version of Windows, as the previous poster said."

Open my computer, open C: and then switch to medium icons view. Now try to drag an icon somewhere. You can't.

Sorting by date for one. Within five minutes of closing your FPS and trying to do some work you will think of a situation where this is useful.

"You cannot "move files around in a folder" in ANY version of windows in our terminology. "

You can. I'm not sure what Windows you've been working with...

Then what are you doing on this thread trying to answer questions about something you don't understand?
