I need to connect to 3 differnet VPN connections then put them each on the desktop. What is the best way to make it happen?
Been using Win7 for a while and adding a program or two every few days. Most recently put in Adobe CS4 and it is running great with other stuff.

My EPG listings had been working fine until the past few weeks. a couple of days ago, I noticed that I was down to a week worth of listings. Today, it's down to 5 days.  In both cases, the About screen said Guide End Date: 3/4/2009 10:00:00 PM.  If I check the log, it shows everything successful for the relevant part.

    2/‎27/‎2009 6:26:32 PM - Processing EpgListings.
    ‎2/‎27/‎2009 6:26:32 PM - Retrieving EpgListing-31.enc.
    ‎2/‎27/‎2009 6:26:37 PM - Extracting 2001728000_ListingData.mxf.
    ‎2/‎27/‎2009 6:26:37 PM - Processing 2001728000_ListingData.mxf.
‎2/‎27/‎2009 6:26:48 PM - Processing of EpgListings is complete.
    ‎2/‎27/‎2009 6:27:02 PM - Update successful.
    ‎2/‎27/‎2009 6:27:02 PM - Next update at 3/1/2009 12:11:02 AM.

    The only error shown is
2/‎27/‎2009 6:26:30 PM - The NetworkMetadata package is not available.

I read elsewhere that it's not related, so I have a clean log. But the listings are still out of date.

I tried setting up my tuner from scratch and nothing changed.  I am using dual ATSC tuners in the SF Bay area, no cable or other sources.

    I'd appreciate any help.

    Fixed.

One thing I forgot to add is that I had tried setting up the tuner configuration again from scratch. It didn't help. I also made some other uneventful changes. The only thing I'm not sure of is whether I had rebooted before or after the tuner setup.  I went through the tuner setup a second time to make sure I hadn't left anything out.  For some reason, MC no longer saw either tuner available and gave me an error when it could not record.  That compelled me to reboot, after which I got a message about it being unable to record a show from a channel I did not get, which was nice to see! I unchecked the spurious channels and my scheduled recording list was down to a reasonable number of shows for the next two weeks.

Setting things from scratch had been obvious enough, but I may have skipped parts that I figured could not have been related. Next time, I'll try the shotgun and reboot approach before posting.

I've been trying to map a CIFS share on a new FreeNAS box to my windows 7 desktop with a multitude of issues. At first windows 7 would bluescreen after being connected to the freenas for 5 min. A hotfix from microsoft fixed the issue but now the mapping seems incredibly intermittant. I can map to the drive just fine, even watch video from the server with no issue. However, after a certain amount of time the drive gets disconnected from windows 7 and disappears from the desktop's view of the network entirely. Its not a problem with the FreeNAS server since I can still use Samba on my linux laptop to access the share. I cannot understand why the freenas server would completely disappear from the network after a certain amount of time.

    Update:

Whatever I did last time fixed the problem, but only for that day.  It has not worked since, and I have not been able to repeat the process successfully.

When I run the update, the mxf file gets downloaded.  The db file gets updated. The program listings stay the same.  If I run the update again, the log messages look the same.  i.e. it has the parts about retrieving, extracting and processing the listings.  If it had indeed worked, the message would have said that it's already up to date.

When I say that the db file gets updated, I mean that the timestamp changes but I have no idea what I should be looking for when I browse it.  I can't try to update the db file manually since the mxf is encrypted so I can't test that or look at it.

Another user with the same problem tried deleting (or renaming) the db file and starting from scratch, but it did not help. So I'd like to know what other areas would make sense to look at.

The most important thing it to get it working, so if anybody has an idea what I can try, I'd appreciate it.

Whenever I run this powerline configuration application (even in compatibility mode) I get the error "Fail to Initialize network interface - exiting".

Does anyone else have the same problem?

    Hello all,

Learned from PDC/WinHEC presentatons, Windows Media Player 12 would not increase timer resolution to 1ms.

But I run powercfg.exe to check the timer resolution when playing DVD movie with WMP 12, I still get the warning indicates timer resolution is increased by WMP 12. Even though I change the power source to battery (DC).

What I want to know is under which condition WMP 12 will increase timer resolution. And is it implemented in current beta version (build 7000)?

    Thanks,
    Wesley

I got this Error since I installed Windows 7:
    1. I installed Steam
    2. Started Steam
    3. Steam Updates and says something like "Error while updating: Deleted Steam.exe but file is still there"
    4. I tried to find out y this happens so i watched the owner and so on of the Steam.exe but i got no permissions to edit or view this (D:<). First time this was when using my own user account called forger7.  I found out how to activate the Administrator Account in W7 but even this did not work :(. It said everytime Deleted but still there. Finally i got it with Deleting the Steam.exe while the Updater has started!

So this is working with Steam, but I have the same problem with some other programs like for example Mirror's Edge from EA Games. When I run it, I can play but if I closed it and want to run again Windows says something like File not found and check if you got all rights to open. (this is free translation into english im using the german version). So i have to reboot or Logoff/logon at Windows. I have this problem with Steam Game Team Fortress 2 also (but not Left 4 Dead or Audiosurf i don't know why). Can somebody help?
Oh by the way.. if u dont understand anything its just cuz of my german-pupil-english xD

    Summary:
CloneZilla Live CD client imaging partitions to a file share on Windows 7 stores 22GB (11 2GB files) before erroring. Error is CIFS VFS error -12. out of memory.

Trying to restart the process from cold boot of the CloneZilla session gets this same error at the attempt to connect to the share.

It requires a reboot of the Windows 7 box to clear the error.

Reproduced this twice--though the amount of data sent varies.  Examining the files stored on the Windows 7 share, it appears to be occuring during the opening of a new file (CloneZilla stores up to 2048000KB per file).

    Details:
I am making an image of a linux system. This particular system is currently a virtual machine in a VMware ESX server. I have mounted the GParted/CloneZilla Live CD ISO (available at http://gpartedclonz.tuxfamily.org/) as the CD-ROM.

Boot to the CD-ROM and use CloneZilla to copy partitions to a samba server.
The partitions are about 8GB and 52GB in size.  I've tried converting both partitions during one run, and converting one partition at a time with a reboot of the VM in between.

Access to the Windows 7 share is via AD. The connection is initially made with no problems.
The 8GB partition copies without problem resulting in two (compressed) files of 2,048,000 KB and 1,065,813 KB, along with 4 other small files.

The second partition has failed each time, with varying numbers of files written. Of the data files, all are 2,048,000 KB in size...no partial files.

This is all being done on a Gbit LAN. Copy speeds being reported by Clonezilla are approximately 700MB/min which seems to be the uncompressed data processed--not the on-network speed.

I attempted the same transfer to a Windows XP share and it is processing at about 1/2 the speed.  This process completed without problem.

Once this error message has been obtained, the clonezilla system cannot access this share until the Windows 7 box is rebooted.  I tried connecting to it again after the XP test and it....  The clonezilla program presents the option to exit to the linux command line after it finishes.

    $ sudo mount -t cifs -o username=xxx,domain=yyy //zzz/images /home/partimag
(xxx, yyy are valid username, domain names, zzz is name of Windows 7 box)

The exact error message at this point is:

CIFS VFS: Send error in SessSetup = -12
     CIFS VFS: cifs_mount failed w/return code = -12
mount error 12 = Cannot allocate memory

It is this behavior of immediate failures until the Windows 7 box is rebooted that suggests that there is a problem with the Windows 7 side of things rather than the linux side.

The output of "cat /proc/meminfo" indicates 665640 kB MemFree of 906572 kB MemTotal

Trying to connect to the same share using the Windows XP box (Run Command box: \\zzz\images) reports: "The specified server cannot perform the requested operation." after a long timeout

From a command line: net use q: \\zzz\images
    System error 58 has occurred.

The specified server cannot perform the requested operation.

I don't know if there is a better place to report this.

I use Clonezilla to clone Linux and all versions of Windows to include Windows 7.  Is your target (where you are storing your images running Linux with /home/partimag exported?) running a Linux client or are you trying to use Windows 7 as the target?

If the latter, I would really, really suggest you use a Linux target so that it can natively export /home/partimag via NFS.  Doing that, you will have no issues.  I have a RHEL 5.2 server with a 1.5TB LVM that is my image source/storage.

I know that is not the answer you are looking for, but I don’t think you will find much support for such an esoteric issue.

Testing win7 media center.  I have 2 happague cards.  Since upgrading to win7 after a program records (not all of them) the info states I have 62 minutes of a show recorded.  When I go to play back the show, the total time showing is only 4 minutes.  The show only plays the first 4 minutes of the recording and media center thinks it is over and ends.  The size looks correct in the recorded folder.  This does not happen for all recordings.

Hi I am a new member on this forum, and french [It's why my english is bad :o(((]

I am running on a computer with Intel E8600 core 2 duo extreme 6 Go Ram pc 6400 and 2 graphic cards NVIdia 285 GTX. Why 2 CG? because I get 5 monitors. 3are connected via one output DVI of the first 285 GTX to a Matrox triple head digital edition this gives 3840 x 1024, then one monitor is on the first dvi output of the second 285 GTX 1280 x1024 (for example to be upper and giving view of the overhead panel of a liner). And the 5th monitor 1280 x1024 is connected on the second dvi output of the second 285 GTX (for example to have the most gauges possible to manage the ACFT) and it is at the bottom of the 4 others.

Also I am a member of Ivao and I run the User  Interface plus weather and traffic on another computer.

If that was good with XP and FS9 (in the past with 2 CG 8800 GTX and a E6800 core 2 duo extreme Intel) and it was only necessary 3Go Ram and for that only XP Pro 32 bits, now it is necessary with Vista and Windows 7 to pass under a bigger proc and the 2 OS in 64 bits to recognize more than 3 Go!

But I must say that between Vista ed fam and windows 7 all 64 bits, windows 7 is the winner to give more FPS= the simulation is more fluent!!!
Also there is a new thing in the fact to pass from windowing mode to full screen mode and back again in windowing mode: on the 4 monitors (the 3 with Matrox and the one at the bottom) you maintain the tall of the windows you've made first.
But there is a but ; if you save a configuration (For example on park position of an airport) and you want to call again the saving you have to move yours windows to get the good image.... This is bad
    :o(((.
Best regards and I will come back again to say others improuvements/ Guy

    Hi All!

    I have a Fujitsu-Siemens Amilo Pi 3540 notebook.

I have installed Win7 Beta build 7000 once, then it crashed because of a registry clean, and I had to reinstall. Now that I reinstalled, the audio drivers have a problem. When I try to install the drivers I used before I get the message: "no driver was supported in this driver package". The audio hardware is Realtek ALC888 HD audio.

I tried uninstalling the windows drivers, tried installing manually but nothing worked.
I don't have audio bios settings so that can't be a problem. I'll post an everest report in the next post. I tried to narrow it down as much as possible, but I don't know what information is useful so it may be a little long... sorry about that!

Thank you for the help in advance!

    Steven

OK! Posting everest report didn't work, text too long. If you tell me what information you need, I will copy it in.

One other thing just came to my mind. I have installed the windows 7 beta drivers from nvidia, which includes dx11 beta. Could it be that the dx files are causing the mess?

For the past couple of weeks I've been trying to get GTA IV to work properly on Windows 7 32 bit.

I have followed numerous website Instructions, but none of them seem to help.

I don't have a problem installing the game, but a problem while playing the game. I had to install using Compatibility mode with Windows XP SP2.

Whenever I launch the game and try to start I can play for about 20 seconds before the game crashes back to the desktop.

I have looked in Event Viewer and get nothing much of value: http://gtaerror.pastebin.com/f367bdc79

My computer more than satisfies the minimum requirements to play this game and I'm using the latest Windows 7 drivers provided by Nvidia (Core 2 Quad Q6600 stock clocked, 9800GT stock clocked, 4GB RAM, 250GB hard drive, 750w power supply, etc).

If anyone has any ideas on how to get this game running, please let me know.

OK color me officially confused. I have 4 PCs on a home wired network. 2 are running W7 and 2 XP. One XP PC has my music collection. I use WMP 11 on the XP box to index the music. I have made several playlists. The other XP box has my wife's music collection. She uses WMP 11 to manage them

On one of the W7 PCs when I run WMP, I see my wife's library under "Other Libraries". Nothing else. On the other W7 PC, I see both XP boxes and the other W7 box. I have tried everything I can think of to get all libraries to show up on the 1st W7 PC. I have rebooted all PCs, I have checked the XP box to make sure the W7 box is allowed to share media with it. I have checked to make sure I have network access to file shares both ways between PCs. I don't know why it has to be so hard. Itunes certainly doesn't make you work this hard to get networked librariries to show up.

Now that I've vented, I do have some questions on the W7 PC that shows all libraries.

    1. It shows about a dozen playlists on the XP box that has my music although only about 4 of them exist on the XP box. How do I get rid of them. Itired deleting them in WMC but they don't go away

    2. If I use WMC on the "good" W7 PC to rate songs being played from the XP library, where are those ratings stored, on the networked library database, or locally on the W7 box. I am really confused about where changes to the database are stored when I'm using a shared library

    3. Any ideas about how to get the missing libraries to show up on the problem W7 PC?

    Hi ,
Another little problem but it is also under Vista 64 bits. When you use under FSX, default planes coming from fsx, as cessna garmin 1000 or cessna classic with GPS, and you put in the monitor upper the ND of the garmin 1000 or the GPS of the cessna classic ( I want to say the monitor which receives window overhead from a liner: ex pmdg MD 11) the garmin or the gps about 1 or 2 minutes don't move and stay at the same place instead of moving as the plane. And to repear I am obliged to switch off and on the garmin or GPS.
And this problem doesn't exist with liners as PMDG or Wilco with their overhead etc.....
    Some ideas?

    Regards.

    1. Exit Windows Media Center and start Task Scheduler by clicking Start, clicking Administrative Tools, and then clicking Task Scheduler.

    2. In the Task Scheduler Library, point to Microsoft, point to Windows, and then point to Media Center.

    3. In the middle pane, scroll through the list of Windows Media Center tasks to find RegisterSearch.

    4. Right-click RegisterSearch and click Run.

    5. Close Task Scheduler and wait a few minutes before attempting to use the Guide Search.

I have finally succeeded in getting the two XP libraries to show up in WMC, although strangely they do not showin WMP 12. However, when I click to open either of them I get the message "This shared music library either contains  no music or you don't have access to it. I have "shared" the library in WMP 11 on the XP PC. I have the folder "shared" with "Allow Users to make changes" checked. What am I doing wrong?

Just for your information, WMP works fine if I set the "monitored folder" to the share on the XP PC. It just can't see the files if I try to use the "shared library" instead.  ???????????????????????

When running Media Center, selecting any of the Sports buttons ('on now' or 'on later' etc.) causes Media Center to stop working.  A dialog box opens with 'searching for a solution to the problem' text.  Media Center closes or hangs.
Gigabyte MB: GA-E7AUM-DS2H (NVIDIA 9400); Pentium dual core 5200; 2GB RAM in two 1GB sticks; 320 GB SATA drive in SATA mode; HDMI output to Sharp LCD TV; Hauppauge HVR-1600 tuner card; W7 32bit.
I've tried the full range of drivers from Gibabyte's site, as well as the W7drivers from NVIDIA's site, without affecting the situation.

Along with many others my WMP will not load any Library songs.  I have my media on a slave HD.  Even the media on my main HD wont load into a library.  It is set to the correct folder locations and told to add automatically, still nothing loaded.  Anyone find a real solution yet?

Secondly, IE8 will NOT open links for WMP content.  Example, streaming media.  Whenever I click a link from a site that on XP/Vista would normally open a WMP window and play a video, IE8 gives me a server error and does not attempt to open WMP in any instance.  I have checked for file associations and they are set properly.  Not sure why this issue occurs.  Though on an XP or Vista machine with IE7/WMP11 these links work fine.  I have tried using compatability mode as well and still the same issue.  Any ideas?

I have have frequant "hang ups" when on IE8 that causes the windows to actually lock up forcing me to close them manually via Task Manager.  I actually had it happen when attempting to post here!

I am running an amd 2.2 dual core on an asus a8n5x, with only 1gb ram on this current machine.  Though this should be more than able to run Windows 7 properly.  Any thoughts?

Windows 7 firewall log does not appear to be working.

Am getting an empty file in C:\windows\system32\logFiles\Firewall\pfirewall.log
Something seems to be slightly odd with the permissions, had to explicitely add my account in order to access the file, despite being a member of domain admins (and as such, local admins)
I have logging enabled, and set to the default location.
I currently just have inbound filtering enabled.
I have been configuring a group policy object for the Windows 7 firewall, but am running into problems as I'm not getting a log file to fine tune the policies.
Enabling outbound was disastrous, as I didn't have prior policies to base it on.  It appeared to kill off the trust relationship with the domain.

I am still banging my head against this "Shared Library" problem. For the sake of clarity let me define what I mean by "Shared Library". When I use the term I mean the WMP database that resides on the PC with the media. In my case I have several thousand MP3 files on a PC and use WMP 11 (this is the XP PC) to create and manage the database on that box. What I am trying to do is to go to another PC and access this database. In my case, I go to the Kitchen PC (W7) and fire up WMC.

At first I couldn't see the MP3 XP PC "Shared Library". I researched possible solutions and finally got it to show up on WMC in the Kitchen by making a Registry change on the XP box which was supposed to Enable Sharing. This was done after trying all the usual "sharing" suggestions within the WMP interface on the XP box.

My problem now is erratic behaviour. On the kitchen PC (W7), sometimes the shared library shows up, but when I try to use it, it's hopeless. The music may or may not show up. If it does, it doesn't seem to want to play. At other times, WMC says there are no shared libraries available.

Now I'm doing this under the belief that this is the way that MS wants it to be used. Maybe I'm wrong.

I can go to any PC on my network and set the "Monitored Folder" to the networked share on the XP PC containing my music. After several hours, I have what I assume to be a "local" database with my music in it. This database works relatively well. Since I have so many songs, it's a little sluggish now and then, but works adequately well to use. This is the way I set it up when I have friends over and want to listen to music. At least I know it will work and I won't have to be continually tending WMC to try to make it work.

Now the downside of using the "Monitored Folder" approach is that since I access my music from more that one PC, I will end up with multiple databases. Thus when I make changes to Ratings, playcount counters, playlists, etc, these only affect the PC that are made on. They will have no effect on others. I assume that MS envisions that I will only have one copy of the database located on the PC with the music and "share" it with all the other devices that want to play music. That way playcounts, ratings, and playlists will be shared.

The problem is that it seems to be incredibly hard to set up that way. I am a long time computer nerd and it isn't like I'm not PC literate. I don't understand why it has to be this way.

For example, if I use iTunes on the XP PC with the music, it easy builds a database and plays my music locally. If I go to the kitchen and fire up iTunes, bingo!, there's the database showing up. I just click on it and wait a while. After a minute of so presto, there's my music. No Fuss no muss.

Now, I've always been a MS guy. I really want to get this to work. But you have to hand it to Apple. iTunes just works. Now WMC is a much more sophisticated program and can do so much more that iTunes. But what good is it, if it is so hard to set up or keeps breaking down when you use it.

Now I'm humble enough to admit that the fault may lie on my end. I'd love to know what I need to do to make it work. But at the end of the day, itunes worked the first time I used it and this WMP/WMC business has burned many hours of troubleshooting time and I still can't get it to work the way I think it was designed.

I'd love to hear from thoese of you who know more than me about how a home media network should be designed and/or what I can do to get this one working the way it's supposed to. Thanks

When ever I try to recompile the project/solution I get the same error.

It's fine the first time you compile it. But have to reboot to be able to recompile the application again.
Right clicking the compiled EXE takes ages to bring up the context menu. And if you try and delete it, it simply reappears.

In Explorer with the file selected it has the 'status' "private" with a lock.

    Any help would be great

I'm in the UK and using a dual-tuner DVB-T PCI card from Peak based on the AF9015 tuner chipset, basically a USB hub on a PCI card with two DVB-T tuners hanging off it.  This has worked without problem under XP, but I'm getting some seriously frustrating problems under Win7 Media Center...

Media Center will scan and find 89 channels in total after some bouncing around.  Only six of these from one provider are actually viewable, the rest come back with 'No Signal' when changing channel to them.

Using Mediaportal to scan for channels only finds the six that are working in Media Center but returns 'No Signal' when trying to view them.

To add insult to injury, I must have tried viewing a 'No Signal' channel in Media Center before Alt-F4 closing it as having just opened Media Center directly in to Live TV it opened on the non-working channel and actually started playing it.  I changed channel to one of the six known good ones and attempted to change back and again 'No Signal', but I know it's there as I was watching it 30 seconds ago...

As the problems seem to be occuring with both Media Center and Mediaportal is this a driver issue with the BDA drivers?  I'm using the latest version for Vista from April 2008 (8.4.29.1), driver provider being 'AFA Tech' who presumably produce the AF9015 chipset.  The drivers themselves install without a hitch and playback on the working channels is perfect.

Any ideas, thoughts or even commiserations would be welcomed!

I have been using Serif publishing products for years, and have always kept upgraded to the latest version and apdates to the latest release. I'm now using Pageplus X3. I have been using it with XP Pro for sometime, and it works fine.

In Windows 7 (Beta), PagePlus run normally—though the UAC ask me if I want to allow it to make cahnges every time I run it. Once running, everything is fine until I attempt to save a file. The the program freezes. Not only that, but nothing that I try can unfreeze it. I tried to allow windows to close it down...it's can't. I've attmepted to close it by using the Task Manager...it can't, either. sometimes, i can't even get Windows 7 to close down while PagePlus is "hung".

    Wonder what going on!

Yes, I AM running the app as an administrator, and yes, I am using XP compatibility mode.

When closing the lid of my laptop, Windows sometimes correctly enters suspend, and there is no problem. However other times, the computer completely turns off. It happens more often when it is left for longer periods of time. i.e. overnight. 90% of the time roughly. The laptop is plugged in overnight. After turning itself it, upon reboot I recieve a message.

    "Object GUID: {...}

    Status: 0xc0000034

This may or may not be related, but upon booting both the Ubuntu and the Windows Boot Loader ask for input.

    Hello,

I have searched all through windows media player 12 and found no easy option for 'media sharing'. Finally got to a place through homegroup where it allowed me to activate some type of media sharing option. After doing so, in my DLNA client, in this case it is a playstation3, but it could be any other device, shows no DLNA server at all. So what option has to be activated to create a proper DLNA server to share our media files?

In the same way i would like to know if I have a DLNA server in the same LAN, such as a mobile device that supports media sharing, does Windows Se7en incorporate any client to view these 'shared files'?

    Thanks in advance.

Okay, so, I configured Windows 7 Media Center with not major issues with my two tuners, an ATI set on analog cable, and a Hauppauge set to work with my cable set top box. Everything worked fine for about a week.

Suddenly, however, I'm receiving the "Copying Prohibited" message whenever I try to watch Live TV (and recorded TV) on the same system. Note: this is _not_ on a different system, but on the single Win 7 box. Non-premium channels are fine, so it would seem that the system's being flaky around the copy protection bit.

    Anybody else having this problem?

I have two Hauphaugge PVR-1600s in my machine.  Both are recognized in Device Manager, and Media Center says I have two tuners.  So far so good.

When I am recording, however, media center will only use one tuner.  If, say, I'm recording Monday Night Raw (ending at 11:07 EDT) and the Daily Show (starting at 11:00 EDT), it will record ALL of RAW, but will not start the Daily show on time.  It will record from 11:07 - 11:30.

Have I set something up incorrectly, or am I missing something?

[This just in]  Tonight, it decided to tape two shows at the same time.  On Mondays, however, it only uses one tuner.

    ...I'm so confused...

Examples are - the Libraries seem to be missing significant folders. I can't save to Favorites (even though my Favorites are there, and were apparently correctly restored.

Briefly, the problem is, there's no way to "see" the complete set of "My XXX" locations, nor any way I can find to define a "common" location for them. At some point after installing Win 7 Beta, I "moved" the location of My Documents, My Pictures, etc away from the default location in C:\Users\Username. Now I seem to have some folders in the relocated location, some in c:\Users\Username, and some just plain don't seem to exist!

    a) What's the best way to fix this??
    b) Have I stumbled across a quite nasty bug?
    c) Should I report this to the Win 7 Beta team

    Hi guys

I have installed the CPP Windows 7 x86 version in a HPCompaq 6510b with 3Gb ram and Intel T7250 CPU.

Regarding app compatibility, I installed office 2007 with outlook and communicator 2007. I connect to my office network and for two days I did not had presence information updated in outlook.
I downloaded all updates that windows update  gave me as important. I did not installed 4 optional updates for windows 7.

Does anyone else had the same problem?

    Hi,

I am testing my application on Windows 7 Ultimate 6.1.7.7000 Build 7000 installed on a x86-64 box.

    Some details of the machine

    System Manufacturer    HP
    System Model    ProLiant DL380 G5
    System Type    x64-based PC
    Processor    Intel(R) Xeon(R) CPU   5160  @ 3.00GHz, 3000 Mhz, 2 Core(s), 2 Logical Processor(s)
    BIOS Version/Date    HP P56, 1/24/2008
    SMBIOS Version    2.4

Installed Physical Memory (RAM)    2.00 GB
    Total Physical Memory    2.00 GB
    Available Physical Memory    1.38 GB
    Total Virtual Memory    4.29 GB
    Available Virtual Memory    3.57 GB
    Page File Space    2.29 GB
    Page File    C:\pagefile.sys

The system has 4 disks presented to it from an external storage array

My application runs "mountvol /n" to disable automatic mounting of these disks. And then it tries to partition the volume using IOCTL_DISK_SET_DRIVE_LAYOUT. While doing this I am getting following bitlocker errors on the volume.

    Bit-Locker Driver Event ID 24615
Metadata initial read: Primary metadata record on volume \\?\Volume{bfd6d9bf-1446-11de-ac95-001e0bc37fbc} could not be found. Volume needs recovery.\

    Bit-Locker Driver Event ID 24620
Encrypted volume check: Volume information on \\?\Volume{bfd6d9bf-1446-11de-ac95-001e0bc37fbc} cannot be read.

None of the disks are bit locker encrypted. In fact bit-locker encryption is turned off. Still I am getting these errors.

And subsequently when I try to format the disks with the windows format command. The operation fails with "Device is offline" error.

The same sequence of events used to work with Windows Vista and Windows 2008 Server without any errors.

    Is this  accepted behavior?

    thanks,
    Praveen

“And the PC is potentially good for getting around kick-in-the-stomach file-format rejections we see in connected products: Windows 7 will automatically render files that it knows the networked device itself can't accept. For instance, a media player that doesn't like AAC will be delivered a more palatable WMA audio track in realtime. Microsoft even says conversion will work with video files—as in, flipping an XviD of The Big Lebowski into WMV as you're watching. It's early in the beta, so there's no telling how pleasant or painful that experience will be. Needless to say, it's not testable just yet.”

I love this feature! Or, I will, once it goes live. These past few days I've been trying to get my Samsung LN46A750R1FXZA LCD TV to play my DivX collection properly over DLNA and WMP12's Media Streaming. My TV picks up WMP's file libraries fine and loads the videos with sound and everything. My only problem is that the files play at their native encoding size, which is some infinitesimally small 480x320, or about ¼th my screen size. Not only that, the TV's 'fit-to' feature distorts the sizes even more gruesomely.

Three(3) freeware apps and two(2) trial software packages later nothing would do this.... or, they would, but the TV wouldn't play the transcoded files due to its own decoding limitations. And then a last ditch kumo search spit that article out, and I breathed a sigh of relief.

Keep working on this, and introduce it in the RC1, all you wonderful media tech gods!!! This would solve all my transcoding problems with DivX files and saves me from having to reencode all of them manually for the DLNA TV; could you image the work that would require for my TB's worth of movies and TV shows?

P.S. My TV's DLNA test certificate: http://certification.dlna.org/certs/REG83873606.pdf Support my device’s profile natively, please? hint, hint? ;)

When playing back DVDs in Windows Media Center running on Windows 7 RC1 (7057) as well as Beta (7000) I experience stuttering and brief pauses during playback once about every 5 minutes or so during the entire movie. This happens on burned DVDs as well as studio produced DVDs. It appears that there's some sort of buffering going on since the DVD drive does not spin the entire time during playback. The drive beings spinning during initial start-up of the movie then stops while the movie is playing and continues to play. After a while (approximately 5 minutes) the movie pauses briefly, the DVD drive spins for a bit then the movie resumes playback. It appears to me that there's some sort of buffering going on as opposed to reading directly from the DVD. Windows Media Player plays back DVDs just fine but Media Center does not and I prefer Media Center over Media Player for DVD playback. I should also note that I did not experience this issue in Windows Vista with Media Center. Does anyone have any idea what's going on and how to fix it?

It seems that after the update today, WMP can no longer remember what my libraries contain. At random times, it will stop streaming (to the PS3) and I will come in to the computer and see that it has lost all the media info on the computer. It will immediately re-locate it and start building the library. Also - the streaming/server service randomly stops and restarts with no user input.

    Any ideas?

so, I recently replaced my antiquated ATI TV wonder Pro (not supported since windows XP) with a haupauge 1800.  After some fairly significant tinkering, I've managed to get windows media center to operate the analog cable tuner and the FM radio on this card correctly, but am not able to locate any option that hints at how to get media center to switch to the composite inputs this card is equipped with (e.g. for using a gamecube/wii or PS2/3 or other composite or S-Video interface external video source).  Presumably this feature exists since surely microsoft would not intentionally deprive users of functionality, but I can't find it.  I've read that earlier version of MC have also had this problem, but that workarounds exist.

On a side note, it is possible to get at an external signal to the composite connectors by claiming that there is a set-top box, but this isn't a completely satisfactory solution as media center then claims that there is no IR connection and refuses to proceed with setup.  It seems like altering windows media center to allow a "set-top" device without an IR system detected would be a simply change that would sovle this problem, allowing the existence of a phantom "set-top" box that is really a VCR or DVD player or console game system.

As a side note to the side note, when windows media center claims it has finished setting up my tuners automatically, it informs me there is an unconfigured tuner.  I am curious if this is media center happily detecting the signal from my console device but refusing to recognize it.

In any case, are there any known workarounds or KB items that I've somehow missed for this?  Seeing as I bought this card specifically to interface console gaming into my PC, not being able to do so is rather a drag.

I am experiencing several problems with offline files:

    1. Conflicts not detected on first sync.
    Work online.
    Create a text file.
    Work offline.
Edit the file on both sides.
    Work online.
    Sync all.
Sync center does not report a sync conflict.
On some later sync the conflict suddenly gets reported.

    2. Error "file in use" when choosing "keep both" to resolve conflict.
When choosing "keep both" a renamed file "...(.... v1)" is created, but Sync Center displays a "file in use" error even though I did close all apps and even all explorers.

    3. "Offline Files" does allow concurrent edits without warning.
While working online one can edit offline files on a client an a server concurrently.
The last save overrides the previous one.
I expect a "file in use" error. If this is not possible technically, there should at least be a warning in the documentation.

    4. Sync center warns about conflicts detected but does not show any under details.
After resolving all conflicts Sync Center still warns about a conflict but does not display any conflict under details. Resyncing does not help. Going offline, closing all explorers and resyncing does solve this. This happens in conjunction with problem 2 above.

    5. Visible file "currently not available for use on this computer"
    Work online.
    Create text file on client.
File shows in explorer on client and server.
    Work offline.
When trying to edit the file on client error: "file currently not available for use on this computer". Syncing before working offline helps, but this is not what one expects.

    6.
Making a large folder (16GB, 70.000 files) available offline crashed my client notebook (maybe because I tried to make available a second folder at the same time). Trying to find out if it crashed while or after the sync is not possible, because folder properties does not display size or number of files. Resyncing takes endlessly (not due to the amout of files but because each file sync seems to take very long). Trying to disable offline files for this folder starts producing lots of errors "cannot sync file at this time, try later.." after a while. The only way to disable offline files for the problematic folder was diabling offlince files completely.

    Hi all.

It's known that Windows cannot download files from FTP if the file size is greater that 4Gb. For example, if user wants to download 6 Gb file from FTP, only the first 3,99 Gb will be shown in explorer and downloded. In this case user must use a special download manager, like ReGet or DM to download the file correctly. Will that bug be fixed in Windows 7?

    Thanks in advance.

While testing 7 Beta I see that shadow copies (Previous Versions) stored on Server 2003 can not be opened.  Is this something that will change?

Previous Versions (shadow copies)  can be opened and restored from XP and Vista machines - there is no problem with the shadow copy  version or setup on the server.

Previous Versions on the Windows 7 machine work fine for files stored on that machine.

There is an issue with windows 7 viewing, opening or restoring previous versions stored on the 2003 Server.  Is there a fix or update to the 2003 shadow copy client for windows 7?

I'm using Win7-64 on a Compaq F572 lapop. I purchased a USB AverMedia Volar hybrid TV receiver. It claims that it can provide NTSC analog, ATSC digital, Clear-Quam digital cable, and FM and digital FM.
The software and drivers loaded OK. The USB device was recognized by Media Center. At first, I used the OEM-supplied high-gain antenna, as Avermedia suggests, for trial and configuration purposes.

It works "OK" for OTA ATSC in both Windows Media Center, and Avermedia's Media Center app. The problem I'm running into is that whether using the antenna or connected to cable (Comcast), I can't get analog, NTSC signal. Windows MC displays a 'No Signal' message, while the Avermedia MC provides a black-and-white picture, except for brief moments of color using the OTA antenna - cable connection, and channel rescanning stll only gives a b&w picure.

I've tried updating the drivers, and also rolling hem back - no difference.  I haven't tried installing the device on another machine, yet... I figured I'd try this forum, to see if anyone has any suggestions.

When viewing a digital or C-quam cable signal, in either Win MC or Avermedia MC, the picure is sharp and clear. I recorded a digital program, and burned it to DVD successfully - playback of the DVD is also quite sharp, so I'm fairly confident that the USB tuner device is working properly, ***except*** for ananlog NTSC, either OTA or direct from cable.

Any thoughts or suggestions are welcomed. Thanks in advance !

    The following software has been installed and is required to get Umbraco up and running;

    Microsoft .NET Framework 2.0
    Microsoft SQLserver 2005
Microsoft SQL Server Management Studio Express
    Microsoft ASP.NET AJAX Extensions 1.0
    Microsoft IIS 6.1

The database created for the app is running fine, application pool is set to run classic .net, web config and machine config are set to Full trust, My Computer and Local Intranet Zones are set to Full trust.

The error message is pointing at ImageManipulation.dll as being the source of the problem, security for this dll is unrestricted, its dependencies are mscorlib 1.0, System.Drawing, mscorlib 2.0, System, System.Configuration, System.Xml, System.Security, System.Data.SqlXml.

    I have tried to increase trust for this dll using the Increase Trust on an Assembly tool in Microsoft .Net's Franework 2.0 configuration tool but once ImageManipulation.dll is selected from the open dialog and the next button is clicked a warning dialog window pops up stating the following;

    Application attempted to perform and operation not allowed by the security policy. To grant this application the required permission, contact your system administrator, or use the Microsoft .net configuration tool. Hash for the assembly cannot be generated;

Does Umbraco work correctly under Windows Vista?

I don’t the answer; however, there were a couple of things that stood out.

    Microsoft .NET Framework 2.0

    Microsoft SQLserver 2005

Microsoft SQL Server Management Studio Express

    Microsoft ASP.NET AJAX Extensions 1.0

    Microsoft IIS 6.1

Looking at the Umbraco web site, they make specific mention about using IIS7, included with Vista/7, instead of IIS 6.1.  Also, Windows 7 already contains .NET 3.5.1 binaries which are backward compatible with .NET 2.0.

WMP12 previsualizacion has "Play" "Next" "Back", compared to the toolbar of Vista is very useless, in the old toolbar I advance or delay the song where I want to, change the volume and see what I'm listening (artist, song album)

I think that the toolbar is much better than the "preview" of Win7

    Should improve it

I am trying to play to my xbox 360 with windows media player. My computer can see my xbox, and is allowing sharing to it. I also have all sharing turned on on my computer. The only problem is that when i right click on a file in WMP, and select play to, it doesnt give the xbox as an option. I've tried it with music, videos and pictures so it isnt a problem with a file type. Any idea on how to fix this? Thanks

Not sure if anybody else has seen this or if this is by design, but we're using 802.1x port security on our wired network.  Once you start the Wired Autoconfig service, the Windows 7 machines authenticate and they can work.  However, it seems that they only authenticate using the machine account.  It seems that the 802.1x supplicant on Windows 7 isn't sending a log on/off command to the switch to initiate re-authentication as the user instead of the machine.  This becomes a problem when you have machines in public areas that have a publicly known local user who is supposed to be pushed into a different VLAN than a corporate user who logs onto the same machine (typically in training rooms etc)

Is there a way around this, or was this an oversight?

Amazing. That is what i think of Win 7 x64 build 7068. Could it get any better? I have not had a single issue since installing 7068 and it is lighter on resources and more responsive. I would acyually buy this now if I was given the option too.  I think this is really going to kill off all those die hard xp heads off.

I typed in some html into notepad and then renamed it as htm on this win7 computer.  After doing so, the icon changed to the familiar blue "e" icon however, when opening the file, all the images were replaced by place holders.  So, I tried opening it with FF instead and it worked just fine.  Next, I sent the six images and html code to others with XP and IE7 and no one else had a problem.

Finally, I decided to copy sections of the text into a new blank html document, testing after each piece of code was added but never could reduplicate the error (in the new file).  The original html remained errant but the competed copy file was great, in IE8.  I believe the issue points to win7 renaming the file type.  The problem is gone now, just passing this info along.

I never got stuck on Aero during Vista but for some reason I've gotten used to and for the most part like it in Windows 7. Just wish there was some way to customise all the colors like with the classic look, especially the ever present white. But other than the changes to Superfetch which has me baffled so far I very much enjoy the experience. Hope there's some article out explaining those changes soon.

    Hi all,

I'm running Windows 7 Beta on my laptop and have discovered a possible compatibility issue. We use System Center Virtual Machine Manager (SCVMM) 2008 to enable end users to manage virtual machines. Using Windows 7 as my client OS I can log on to SCVMM and manage my virtual machines without any problems.

But when I try to connect to the console of a virtual machine using the “Connect to VM” button, I end up with the following error message in the Remote Control Session window:

“Virtual Machine Manager failed to connect to the virtual machine because the guest operating system’s computer name (MyServerName) could not be resolved by the Domain Name System”

I’ve search the Internet and the exact same error message shows up if you have a OS that doesn’t have CredSSP (like WinXP SP2) or if it’s not enabled.

    This thread explains the problem:
    http://social.technet.microsoft.com/Forums/en-US/virtualmachinemanager/thread/b4294ac4-e390-4cf1-b133-425a2d82fc2f/

I’ve compared the CredSSP settings in the registry with my Server 2008 client (where I can connect without problems) and can’t find any relevant differences.

I’m accessing SCVMM over Internet so connecting via RDP is not an option in this case.

I’m not sure whatever this problem actually lies in the CredSSP settings or if the Active X component used to connect (SystemCenter.VirtualMachineManager.VMMCtlAx.VMConnect) is incompatible with Windows 7 for some reason.

This is currently a blocking issue for me to use Windows 7 as my primary client OS – anyone out there with suggestions?

Overall it's pretty good, feels a little faster than Vista and I like the new functionality. A few niggles:-

    1. Doesn't always shut down when asked.
    2. Some minor application issues, nothing that couldn't be fixed :- AVG 8.5 installion, itunes installation
    4. Some h/ware issues:- HP3210 doesn't want to pring borderless photos, my soundblaster audigy plays white noise a lot of the time,  doesn't recognise my memory card reader (Vista also has trouble here)
    3. IE8 doesn't always remember my login names etc (although this could be IE8)

On balance nothing big and still feels nicer than Vista; August will be a wrench if I have to go back....

I am not looking for a workaround.  I was able to use the exact methodology using a Windows XP box with a share to host the image.

What I am doing is trying to report this as a problem in Windows 7 and providing as detailed a bug report as possible.  The problem was encountered and reproduceable using this example.

There are audio problem in bink cinematics in games like Mirror's Edge and Unreal Tournament 3... Both are updates to the last version... In the forum there are other users with this problem, so I think it's not only my problem...
P.S.: referred to my post on the previous thread, I know that the old driver is not Microsoft's guilt, but vendor's guilt, but I'm tired to listen people that accuse Microsoft for problems caused by bad or broken or old driver... 95% of world's people are not objective, and it's so fastidious... So in the previous post I don't want to accuse Microsoft, I wanted to clarify this point ;)... Most of problems on pc is caused by driver or applications written in bad way, and it isn't right that this muddy Microsoft's name...
P.P.S.: sorry for my bad English, but I only studied it at school, and my prof wasn't interested to teach it to us...

    Hi Sotcr

You will need to wait and check this on the official RC release, which should be soon.

I'm going to merge this thread with the Feedback for better visibility for the Beta Team.

    Hope this helps.

I loaded the Win7 x64 version beta, and after very intense testing and use, I found two things that need (ed) work. One the Desktop Status Bar after boot up would not load icons until it was moved. That was apparently fixed in a update.
The other thing is the Blinking Icons for Networking. I know they are somwhat Eye Candy, however to many of us they are also quick visual of the network traffic, and a good way to tell if actually connected.
I hope they will be added back to the OS. (Please)
I can say without a doubt that Win7 is loking like the best Windows Version since Windows 3.1. I have had no problems with it so far. Being a x64 version and auto finding all the drivers is in itself a excellent accomplishment.  (Smiley Right Here)

    Good Job, Keep it up....

Today I was reading the Engineering Windows 7 blog, and wanted to put a comment in the "Federating Windows Search with Enterprise Data Sources" topic, but even after maybe 9 attempts, I could not post it there. So, I will comment in here, and hope the dev team to see it.

There is a part of the post that says: "But wait, there’s more! Windows Explorer is a great tool that many customers know and love. But some people use it without even knowing it. Countless Windows applications make use of what we call the Common File Dialog. This is a special Explorer window that lets you find and choose items to be opened or inserted into your current application, without ever leaving it. If you’ve ever clicked File and then Open or Save in an application menu, you’ve probably seen some version of this dialog."

And later the user Hairs posted that explorer WAS. He says: "Now, it is a nanny which is attempting to tell me how, where, and when I should organise my files. This started with User Directories (good idea, messy implementation) and the My Documents/Pictures/Video system. Libraries, however much they are repainted, are nothing other than a slightly less messy implementation of the same idea."

And I agree. I think explorer is becoming more and more "simplified" over time, but the cost is losing functionality every new windows version.

I know it is impossible to please everyone. It´s a fact. But, beeing Windows explorer "a great tool that many customers know and love" and, more USE, I risk to say Windows Explorer and it´s dialogs are one of the most used feature in windows. If millions of people use something everyday, a interface set in stone will for sure, not please everyone. For me, this is one of the reason for sucess of XP explorer. User could easily customize it.

Later, in the same topic of the blog, the user bpaddock asks many questions to another users, about the use they do/expect of explorer. I would like to comment it here, and make a effort to be clear with my own ideas about Windows Explorer.

bpaddock: "Windows 7 will always remember the view settings you choose."

ME: This is simple a LIE. There is only ONE button I use in the "NEW" command bar of explorer... and, this ins not the BURN (I hate it) nor Organize (I like to use keyboard shortcuts to cut, copy, undo etc). The only button is the one to set my Downloads folder to LIST, because EVERY SINGLE TIME I open my folder, it changed to something "random". If I downloaded 2 or 3 pictures, it changes to show me thumbnails. If I download 2 or 3 text documents, it changes itself to Details, but it NEVER, NEVER remain the way I WANT. or, LIST.

bpaddock: "I'm also curious about how you think the current Explorer design impedes your ability to organize your files effectively."

ME: In fact it´s very simple! Let me tell: I have 100 files in a folder. If I was using the explorer in Windows XP (that was GREAT) I can simple look to botton of the screen and see something like: 100 itens, 899 MB.
So, I know in less than a second that all this files WILL FIT in a 1GB pendrive, and will NOT fit in a partition with 500mb free. So, I know very quickly the names, and sizes of my files.
And now? Explorer "improved", so, if I have the same files, and I look at the botton, I see a HUGE, and I mean HUGE details pane, taking LOTS of my screen space, and it shows "100 itens". In that HUGE pane, I don´t have the same information xp used to provide me in a single corner of a SINGLE LINE.
So, what I have to do? Select all my files... but, wait... I just selected more than 15 files... so, the "evolved" explorer can´t tell me the file sizes YET! I have to perform ANOTHER STEP, and click "More info". Oh! Good! Thanks for the evolved explorer. Now, I only need to select all my files (and don´t even think about selecting a folder along, it will NOT work later), click in show more details and, voilá! I have the exactly same info that used to cost me NO Selection, and NO click in the "old, bad and ugly" explorer from xp.

Next one: I use to organize my files in list, because I normaly have lots of files in a single folder (one folder for books, one for music, etc). So, I go to my books folder.
In the OLD explorer, I had a nice list view, with the books organized in the way: Author - Title.doc or pdf . Now, once the NEW list view have a column limit of 44 characters, I see my books like Author - Tit...  Oh! very good... I have (with lucky) less than the few first letters of the title.

So, lets recap... With the new explorer, there is 2 things that I can´t see in my files: 1) Their SIZES, and 2) Their full NAMES!

Sure, not being able to see NAMES and FILESIZES never imped me to working with my files... I just select some of them at random, and burn them to a DVD.. oh! no, I can´t.. they don´t fit the dvd and I didn´t knew it... sorry, was just too much work to see the sizes. Oh! The files in dvd was not the ones you need? Sorry again, explorer just didn´t showed me the file names... but explorer EVOLVED! It´s new now! GREAT!

bpadock: "Do you not make use of Libraries at all?  They can be very helpful in organizing your files how you like."

ME: Yes, I use them, and agree they are a very nice idea. They help to organize files/folder and reducing the mess. Using libraries, I can keep all my files in a hard drive (D) and point libraries to d:\music, d:\books and so on. This way, its easy for me, because I never liked the "My x" folder organization, and, even more, I dislike having personal files in the same drive as the OS. Since Windows (different from linux) never give us a chance (during install) to point the User folder to a different drive, using libraries is a very good workaround to have quick acess to my files, no matter where they are. Keep libraries, they are, indeed, a improvement, the kind of improvement I want to see, not the "it changed, now its better". Diferent is not better. Better is better. Changing without purpose is not evolving, is just un-needed modifications.

You can also use the settings dialog, or right-click on the background of the Navigation pane area to choose the "Show All Folders" option, which I think feels very much like a 'classic' Explorer model.

He: "Where are you seeing a problem with the size column?"

ME: I alreay told you. Having list not showing full file names is a BIG problem.
Just let me clarify. I have a widescreen monitor (and I think lots of people have, since they are becoming comum). That mean I have more space to see files from side to side than I have to see from top to bottom. In list, I can see LOTS of files in a single screen. In details, I need to scrool and scrool (like I have to in the All Programs, but it´s another complain) to see lots of files. So, I prefer to use list. But, list view is limited and IMO, broken, now. At least we need a option to "always show full file names" or "start new column after XX characters of file name" but we don´t have option.

"File types like AVI and TXT do not provide support for open metadata.  This is a limitation of the file format.  Believe me, we aren't ignoring this problem, but unfortunately some problems don't have easy answers and take more time than others to get right."

I agree with you. Its a problem with file format, nothing wrong here.

Now, to expand a little more, what I dislike about the NEW explorer, in a way of making things that comes with Windows Vista, and is rolling to Windows 7 as well:

    1) Why can´t I customize the toolbar? I could do that easily in xp. See, again, we have a involution here. As I told, its impossible to please everyone, but if there is absolutely NO WAY to customize one thing used for millions of people every day, them, it will for sure cause more trouble.

    2) Autoarrange: PLEASE, and I´m not asking, Im BEGGING you: PLEASE, let me disable this annoyance. I lost the count of how many times I created a new folder, and, like I always did in xp, started to type the name it should have, just to see my first characters disapear to nowhere, because the folder was autoarranged. Even worse, I always was able to cut/copy/move lots of files to a place in xp, create a folder, name it, select all files and put in the new created folder. I just can´t do that anymore. If I put files in a folder, they start to arrange itselves (and I didn´t ask for it). Autoarrange is REALLY REALLY annoying for me. (and again, I´m talking about OPTION. the need of put the things MY way. I don´t want to impose my way over the others. If there is people over there that like/love this feature, let them use it and be happy. But, please, don´t force me to use something that really is bad for MY way of work.)

    3) Details Pane: It´s inconsistent. If I select a picture, explorer start to show lots of info. They are useful, most of times. BUt, file size, for instance, is in the 3 column, in the top for pictures, but for most of the file types, its in the bottom of the first column. I Know pictures have different attributes than music of documents, but ANY file have file size and name. I think there are some attributes that deserve a little dedicated space, like the status bar in Windows XP used to provide for file sizes in the right corner. That was great.

And more,  if the explorer window is not large enough, it don´t have a + sign or something in the right of the details pane to show that there is more info and it´s just not showing it.. I have to figure it by myself.

For me, since Windows Vista, windows explorer is just becoming less and less usable. Less and less customizable and losing functionality every time.

I would love to use windows 7 with a "Classic" windows explorer. I dare to say that the EXACTLY same windows explorer from xp, just with Libraries support would be perfect for me.

I'm very dissapointed with the final version of IE8... In preview builds (Of IE) there was a feature for search in the history titles and now is gone...

In the current beta this feature is still on and many of you will note when they release the RC with a new build of Ie8 without this feature

I agree with Warel and must reiterate how retarded some aspects of the new windows explorer (WE) is .  and by "retarded" I don't mean to denigrate mentally handicapped people, but whoever decided these functions.  stupid is as stupid does...

Triple the size of the status bar yet neglect to show the most crucial piece of info?  who thought this was a good idea?  say I want to put files on my 1G usb stick.  in XP, I can see immediately how much space I have left on the stick.  in 7, I have to go to my computer.  then as I select files on my HD, in XP I can immediately see the total size.  add or remove from the selection and I immediately see the total size changes.  in 7, I have to click see details.  WHAT?  WE actually stops for a few seconds to calculate!!  sometimes it stops so long I think it in't doing anything. as I add or remove files from the selection, I have to keep track in my head about how much the total is, or stop and click see details again.

I don't get it.  Has the filesystem become more complex since XP?  it's still NTFS right?  what is the malfunction here?  It's beta, you say.  I asked someone who was using build 7048 (I know, I know, no non official build discussion, sorry) and he said this annoying behavior is still there !  they've increased the total items you can select before the 'see more details' comes up from 15 to 25 or something, but it's still there.  unbelievable.

when did toolbar icons become passe?  now we just get words, with low contrast dark blue on light blue.  faint is the new clear!  I guess it's cleaner and prettier that way.  and customizable toolbar?  that's so 1990's.  why let the customer mess up your design right?

I ragged on WE because it deserves it, but there are some good things: the breadcrumb (though it is does NOT obviate the usefulness of the up button, as MS seems to think), the checkbox for selection, the built in search bar, and the drop down filter on column headers.

on the last, why aren't the column headers there when I'm not in details view?  just b/c I want to see large icon thumbnails doesn't mean I don't want to sort or filter.  also, the filter on name isn't terribly useful.  how helpful is it to see files A-H?  this seems like one of those things that were put in just b/c there's a capability for it (the other columns have it, we better put something in the name column too) without really considering what would be useful.  what WOULD be useful is a text box to type in a part of the name.  very often, I know the file I'm looking for is in the current folder, and I know part of the name; I just don't want to scroll through to look for it.  It'd be very useful to filter by typing in part of the name.  or I have files named 'blah blah foo', 'blah blah foo rev 1', 'blah blah foo rev 2', I want to type in 'foo' and see all revisions. I can use search, but that will search subfolders too and content of files (if I have that enabled), giving me more results that I don't want and doing it slower to boot.  so: I want to click on drop down button on the name column header, get a text box with focus and be able to start typing and see the names filtered immediately as I type (just like the search in the start menu).  This should be FAST.

also, please make it an option (or registry hack) to have the drop down button show at all time.  I don't want to have to hover over the column.

I don't know if Vista had this functionality but when it works its great. My problem occurs when I choose several TV programs or Music or both at the same time and let the machine do its thing. I get a popup that media center needs to close. Some files make it over and the last one in the process plays up to the poitn where MP crashed. Everytime the error reporting dialog pops up I try to send my error report of to MS but it gives me an error like I am not using a valid Live login. I use the same login I use for the MS Connect site.

Whenever I switch to "Now Playing", it's usually just the album cover.  The visualizations don't start until I click on the one I want, which is already 'ticked'.  Reminds me of the old days when you had to tap the side of the TV to get it to work. :)

IE8 - I like the koisk, like the fact that I can still use the keyboard (F11), like that it works w/ or w/o the status bar, like the autohide menu in koisk mode.  And it works w/ or w/o compatibility mode on (i tried before and after).

Windows Explorer - I like the koisk here just the same.  Please do not remove these features.

Internet Explorer can print and always could.  Windows Explorer cannot print and never could.  I have been wanting to print from Program Manager...oops I mean Windows Explorer for years.  Nowadays I would still be printing, but to PDF.  Please offer this basic service.

I am running Windows 7 64 Bit. We are testing the various applications that we use to manage our equipment. One is a microwave management application by Ericsson. We have the latest software that is supported on Windows Vista. When I try to load the software it returns a failed comment that MSDE 1.0 is installed. Does Windows 7 have MSDE installed with a basic installation of the OS? Is there a way that I can remove MSDE from Windows 7.

I was using Windows7 beta daily but it seemed to keep failing or not doing as expected.  my initial reaction was that win7 is better than vista.  it seems overall to be great but I had to go to Vista to get things done.  Im trying to find if there are any updates to load? but searching has yielded nothing so far; updates to win7.

then there was the antivirus thing, confusion about the norton av beta, said its going to expire but its a beta and even with a credit card couldnt figure out how to extend the av coverage... so that kind of made me want to go back to vista.

as I recall win7 has add/remove programs once again? in vista its called something you'd never guess was add/remove programs like program features/appearance or color settings.  how to uninstall programs in vista? hassle.

the thing vista has done right is in the start button, the text search.  it should be smarter, if I type in device manager it should look back to what stuff has always been called then put in the right new word, not say "no results"

something vista and win7 do that REALLY ANNOY ME (and Im very calm) is when looking for a document or image file?  click on my documents, as its been for 100 years. Access Denied!

what? you cant be serious.  I want to look in the my documents folder.  access denied. but Im an admin user? access denied.  I have to email my report in 5 minutes, the one Ive worked on all week? because the meeting starts in 10 minutes.  access denied.  right click, properties, share, make folder shared.  access denied.

this is what made me stop using win7, I thought it was a virus that was blocking the my documents folder.  I spent days backing up and going to vista.  looks like vista does this too.  I figure its kind of a luck thing.  click on one of the my documents folders, seems to be random, sometimes it works, usually not.  in the old days one could open an explore window and look at files.  Now with vista and win7 this is not the case.  as the admin/super user/majordomo setting up the pc to do whatever I tell it? access denied. I need this file!  access denied.  My feedback? this access denied is a major flaw. give me Liberty and access ability or give me... an explanation.

sometimes sneaking in by the User path Ive stumbled on a documents folder, but I dont trust the explore window in vista/win7.  and is there ANY WAY to go back to the plus sign in a box? that is the windows95 way, its tried and true.  and in explorer, going up a level? I cannot find it, I type in the path manually, clicking the path and backspacing over the current folder or clicking the folder manually, again very annoying.  why the up/level was removed? I want the win95 style.

I will attempt to make this short and sweet, I pray to the gods that SOMEONE hears me, because these problems frustrated me in Vista! Let alone Windows 7. (I stuck with XP, Vista I couldn't handle the frustration)

    1.
Status bar is missing drive space free in Windows explorer, must click properties on drive for space free now or my computer - less convienient than XP - why?
    2.
Breadcrumb bar, please PLEASE offer an option to disable it, so that you please both the people who like it and us die hards who loathe it.
    3.
Windows Explorer, when I type, I want it to skip to that file, example typing 'win' should take me to files beginning with "win" depending on the pane I've clicked on.
Do not have that search up the top right, 'steal focus' of my keystrokes - I don't want that search there, ever - optional disable.

    More to come.
    PLEASE CONSIDER.
P.S options hurt no one! just the OPTION to do these, keep the new fluffy stuff for the people who like that, please think of the technically minded, keyboard users who need to work damned fast on a machine to actually work!

I have a lot of compilations in my music library. In iTunes the flag for a compilation saves from labeling each song as "Various Artists" for the album artist. Media playter cannot realize this and makes a mess of my music compared to iTunes. This needs to be fixed.

I use the M4A lossless format, its been reverse engineered and I saw some code an an AV package. Not sure about legals as Apple has not published the spec. Still the AAC is part of the MPEG license not apple.

    Thoughts?
IT/Developer, Windows/Linux/Whatever I need a new web server, the antique IBM 300GL has a 137GB disk limit, for my chess site. I wanted to post many more downloadable files, the existing 30GB disk is insufficient.

I just want to give some feedback on Windows 7 Beta. I upgraded from VistaUltimate sp1 to Windows 7 Beta and I'm blown away by the performance of Windows 7 Beta. The Microsoft Team has out done themselves on Windows 7 Beta. The overall function and ease of Windows 7 Beta is of no comparison to VistaUltimate. Fact I wished I would have saved my money and bought Windows 7  when it becomes RTM instead of wasting it on VistaUltimate and now come August I'm stuck back to VistaUltimate. I had no driver issues when installing Windows 7 Beta. I can do all my office work, games, music, movies and so much more with no issues. The only software issue is I cannot use OneCare as it is not compatible with Windows 7 Beta, nor will it be I just read. I have used Windows Operating System for many years and in my opinion Windows 7 out performs all of them, even Windows XP which was my favorite until Windows 7. Thank you for making the PC a pleasure to use again.

I'd like to see Themes with really different looks.  All the themes basically just look the same with different backgrounds and glass colors.  I could do that myself.  I would've liked, for example, a dark theme like this

    http://www.kde-look.org/content/preview.php?preview=1&id=72811&file1=72811-1.jpg&file2=72811-2.jpg&file3=&name=Ultra+pack+-+220+color+schemes

There doesn't seem to be a way to do that and still have aero.  The high contrast themes look atrocious, like something from windows 2.0.

The beta is supposed to be the Ultimate version, right?  is there going to be an ultimate ultimate version?

I would also like to echo Warels comments, Windows Explorer has taken a turn for the worst.
This is what technicians use, this is what admins use, this is what the people who evaluate Windows and decide what to roll out next use.
Think of us, we're the same people who caused Microsoft to have so much trouble with Vista, we told our friends, we told family, co-workers, we told everyone what we thought of it.

Vista isn't the worst thing ever but the silly UI choices and making things HARDER to find made it overall more difficult to use than XP.
As long as that trend continues, we'll continue to recommend XP.

Agreed with Barth2k, removing the drive free space in the status bar is MIND BOGGINGLY stupid!
Microsoft, why would you do this? Seriously, you need to sit in a meeting and really question why would someone do this?
Who thought it was a good idea, I mean it, who thought that - because that change is a distinct sign of someone simply 'not getting it' or fiddling for the sake of fiddling!
EDIT: Barth2k: I can confirm 7057 has the same problem issue, no drive space in status bar.

Agreed on the up button, this should be optionally included, even if they THINK breadcrumbs are replacing it, they aren't - the physical location changes - up is simple and easy to find
EDIT: Barth2k, if you're talking about the little 'down arrow' selection boxes in details view up the top of Windows explorer - specifically on "Name | Type | Total Size | Free Space" then no!
Thank GOD they moved those silly little arrows from there, it made it look so cluttered!
One of the changes I really appreciate in Win 7.

I´m glad for not beeing alone in my comments.
Just hope the dev. team surprise me with a really improved Windows Explorer in the RC to come. I like very much to use Windows XP, the same way I dislike very much when I use Vista. So far, Seven is faster than Vista, but still not as good to use (in some aspects) as XP.
Windows explorer is my main concern, followed by some annoyances, like beeing impossible to selec the pictures I want to import from my digital camera. I always could select what I want and what I don´t in XP. In seven, I can´t. Now it is ALL or NONE. Just another case where seven is a step back from what xp was almost a decade ago.

Dev team, please, we need to evolve, we want new GOOD features, we want to step forward. Please, stop going back. Stop changing what was good before.

    Media Center:

1). Album Cover must (apparently) be first generated by viewing albums in WMP or it won't show in MC viz despite all tracks having Art inside (WTF!?)

2). Once that is done with (whatever) when playing an Album in MC, the viz screen shows that stupid, crappy 200x200 5k JPeg generated for the WMP cache. Only when playing individual track(s) does the correct (as in original) image show.

3). Do you guys ever communicate with one another? Album art is stored in a bazillion folders, it's like a roach infestation and why does MC store art preview images in Temp Internet folder (I counted in 13 different locations to boot)? What does MC have to do with the Internet for Pete's sake? You've had plenty of feedback over the years that WMP library management was and continues to be retarded and you still decide to compound the issue by plugging and hiding information all over the hard drive. Please give it up already. If it doesn't work, it doesn't work, NBD if you at least let people take some action easily enough without having to call the Orkin man.

    Agree with Luna Tick..

I still don´t know why the WMP have to make albumartsmall.jpg and folder.jpg hidden / systemfile and so on. Just make the files visible easily. It´s enough time to stop hidding things from users (file extensions, anyone?).

Or, better, make a centralized place, like ONE SINGLE folder with all albumart, something like: Artist-Albumname.jpg, and it´s done, without lots of files beeing like a total mess (and worse, hidding!) in the whole hard drive.

    Hello,

Currently in the Windows 7 beta program I can play M2TS files for 1 second on my Xbox 360 (the I get a frozen screen). Also playing it on my workstation doesn't work flawless (it's choppy and the processor is hitting 90-100%).

My Sony camcorder  CX11 (or CX12 in U.S.) can record in AVCHD (m2ts files) at 16 Mbps rate. Lower rates include 12 / 9 and 5 Mbps. I prefer to record in 16 Mbps and I expect Windows 7 and my Xbox 360 to playback this high quality 1080i material without chopping or glitch (I don't use WiFi to connect the Xbox 360 to the network, I have a 100Mbps ethernet Cat5e cable)

Does somebody know if this (Playback 16Mbps M2TS files created on a Sony CX11 with a Xbox 360 as MCE Extender) is on the feature list of Microsoft?

    Best Regards,
    OneDutch

So I just reinstalled 7 on a bigger partition so I could try more programs on it and I discovered something that needs to be fixed.  I was putting the partition on a drive that also has Windows Vista on it.  I compacted my drive, but had a small unmovable system file in the way that only let me make a 10GB partition which is not much use.  I turned off System Restore, Paging File, and Hibernate, but the file remained.  Even trying to defrag/compact or shrink the volume while booted in my existing Windows 7 (on a different drive) would not move it.  I ended up having to use Ubuntu to shrink the volume so I could make a partition.  Isn't there a way that you guys could make it possible for these files to be moved?  Even if it requires rebooting the computer it would be a vast improvement.

About the new Windows 7, after two installs I have decided it is not a problem I can fix, but rather a bug...  Why is it that the only way to change the settings for you notification icons or task bar tool bars, and have them be saved for the next time you log in, is to boot without UAC, change them, and then reboot with UAC back on.  It is really annoying.  It would also be nice if there were an easier way to get full access to modify files on other drives on the computer.  For example it took me forever before I could modify files on my Vista Partion without having to give myself permission first.  The current process for changing permissions is anoying, make a setting in User Accounts that lets users take full permission of all files on all installed drives.  One last thing, stop making files on other drives be read only, all my pictures are on another drive, but even to rotate one I have to copy it to my Windows 7 drive and then copy it back again.

    Media Player/Media Center Library:

    1) Following is a gripe only because it is 2009 I would have thought it'd be in already. When we sort things we have a certain system that sometimes clashes with what the computer sees. 11 does not follow 1 and The Kite is not filed under T but rather K . That all is well and works fine so no complaints. What is not fine is that an artist Joe Shmoe , will be filed under J instead of an S . While there is no feasible way to detect between person name or name (and leaving it up to the system would prove disastrous) WMP Library should introduce a custom Atrist-file library tag or alike much like File-As in MS Outlook Contact except this one would be used exclusively for sorting not display (I don't want a list to say Shmoe Joe). It may not be a pressing, high importance matter but I constantly catch myself looking for the artist in the wrong catalog group and it would be nice to follow customary sort order.

    2) I already mentioned it in my feedback to MS, but WMC should introduce a Sort By option for the By-Album "Thumb Wall" display. It is a cool display but I would love to be able to sort those hundreds of thumbs by Artist->AlbumName as I personally think when we think Album , first we thing Who (or maybe it's just me). In essence, it would become a By-Artist display but without Artist Name header and space wasted by grouping (which makes that display all but useless).

With the last couple of releases of the Windows Operating system you have hidden file extensions of known file types by default in Windows Explorer.

This is a huge security risk.  Virus are spread easily when file extensions are hidden.

Example:  Someone receives an email with the following file name:   PICTURE.JPG.EXE   -  When file extensions are hidden the user will see the file name as PICTURE.JPG the .EXE will be hidden.  So the user thinks its a harmless .JPG picture not realizing its a disguised executable file which will install a virus\trojan\spyware.

Plus I'm tired of receiving documents with names such as DATA.TXT.TXT because the user doesn't realize the extension is already there, but just can't see it because its hidden.

So please with Windows 7 show ALL file extensions by default.

I know that you can pin applications to the taskbar in Windows7, but I've got about a dozen frequently used programs and do not want to fill up the task bar with all those icons when I don't use them all simultaneously.  Plus, I find it cleaner to keep my shortcut icons separated from my running applications.  I keep one icon pinned to the taskbar for my email.

The Quick Launch area works fantastic for me in Vista.  I set the size area of quick launch so that 3 icons will show on the taskbar and the rest of the icons will show up in a popup menu when I click on the >> symbol.  There is absolutely no reason why we can't have both the ability to pin icons to the taskbar and still retain the option of the quick launch area.

Please restore the quick launch toolbar exactly as it is in Windows Vista located right next to the Windows logo on the left hand side of the taskbar with the ability to adjust the size of the quick launch area (how many icons will show on the taskbar before they are moved to the quick launch pop-up menu).  For those who don't want to use the Quick Launch toolbar than just include the option to disable it as you currently can in Windows Vista.

Yes, being able to pin icons to the taskbar is a welcome feature, but I will not fill up the task bar with the dozen of frequently used applications I use since it just makes the task bar a mess. I'll keep 1 or 2 programs pinned to the taskbar, but I want the rest to reside on the quick launch toolbar.

So please restore the quick launch toolbar in Windows 7 since there is no reason not to have both the option of using the Quick Launch toolbar or pinning the program directly to the taskbar.

Windows Explorer - Do not hide the "FILE" "EDIT" "VIEW" "TOOLS" pull-down menus by default.

I know you can get the pull down menus to appear by pressing the "ALT" key to appear, but how does the average user know to press the ALT key.

You should have the menus appear by default then if a user doesn't want to see the pull-down menus the user can go to the VIEW pull-down menu TOOLBARS and deselect the option to view the pull-down menu toolbar (don't bury the option under TOOLS - FOLDER OPTIONS - VIEW since the pull-down menu is not related to the folder themselves, but add it to the VIEW pull-down menu TOOLBARS - MENU or just VIEW pull-down menu - MENU).

I'm sure someone thought lets simplify Windows and take away the menus, so now Explorer looks simpler, but its now harder to use if a person doesn't realize they can press ALT to get the pull down menu.  Or they could go to the TOOLS - FOLDERS OPTIONS - VIEW to enable the menus, but I don't think most people realize that the Windows Explorer menu can be enabled under a menu related to folder options. So please just enable the menus by default.

Why would someone want to use the pull-down menus?  Well maybe they want to see file extensions, but don't know that they can enable file extensions because they can't see the pull-down menu to access the TOOLS pull-down menu so they don't bother exploring the options under the TOOLS pull-down menu.

    Windows Explorer

    1) Please add the pull-down menu TILE WINDOWS HORIZONTALLY and TILE WINDOWS VERTICALLY

These options would only affect Windows Explorer windows.

I know you added the feature of dragging a Windows Explorer window to the side of the screen to tile it horizontally so that you could have two Windows Explorer windows opened at the same time and tiled so that you can easily drag files for copying\moving from one window to another window, but a lot of people don't realize this feature exists.  By adding a pull-down menu with the additional option of TILE WINDOWS VERTICALLY people will realize this feature exists and can either tile the Windows vertically or horizontally.

This is one of those great features that File Manager in Windows 3.1 had, but was removed in Windows 95.

    2)  Another great feature that File Manager had in Windows 3.1, but was removed in Windows 95 was a toolbar that listed all of your drive letters horizontally across the top of the screen.  You could click a drive letter and the Windows Explorer tree would expand with that drive open.  I don't know about you, but at my office I've got around 20 drive letters mapped and it would be so convenient to be able to just click the drive letter at the top of the screen instead of having to scroll down Windows Explorer to find the drive letter.  Of course this should be an optional toolbar that a user can disable.

    3)  I strongly agree with a lot of posters to this board who are complaining that the details area of Windows Explorer is way to big.  Its displaying information that is already being shown in the column headers and why does it need to show this information in 2 rows.  You can cut its size in half by just showing this information in a single row.  I'd rather just have the option of disabling it and showing the status bar as in Windows Vista so I can see the free space left.

    Command Prompt From Here functionality.

Please add the "Command Prompt From Here" to Windows Explorer in Windows 7.  This is a MS power toy utility that should be included as part of Windows Explorer and not a separate add-on.  It allows a user to right click a directory in Windows Explorer and select the "Command Prompt from Here" from the pop-up menu to open a DOS command window residing in the directory that the user right clicked.

Microsoft seems to forget that computer professionals and not just grandma still use Windows and a lot of us still need to get some work done in a DOS window.  Its so much easier being able to right click a directory in Windows explorer and have the DOS window open to that directory instead of having to use the CD command to change directories.  Obviously someone at MS realizes this otherwise they never would of created that power toy in the first place.

We should not need to download a separate add-on for this functionality.  It should be part of Windows Explorer.

Windows Media Player thumbnail size adjustment.

Please add a slider to Windows Media Player so that we can adjust the size of the album art thumbnails.

I'm running at a resolution of 1900x1200 and the thumbnails are on the small size for me.  It would be nice if I could increase the size of the thumbnails.

FILE pull-down menu needs to be added to the Windows Media Player.  It can be added next to the LIBRARY, MUSIC and ARTIST drop down lists.

I know I can bring up the FILE menu by pressing the ALT key, but how is the average user supposed to know that.

Why does Microsoft feel that hiding menus is helpful to the average person?

And please stop changing the FILE pull-down menu to a clickable logo in programs like Microsoft Office.  People have been use to having a FILE pull-down menu and then Microsoft decides to change it to a logo that they don't even know they can click.  I really feel sorry for people that work the help desk having to go around telling people that the FILE menu is still there, but its now a logo you can click or press the ALT key to bring up the menu.

ALT key and a letter to Restart or Shutdown the computer.

Every once in awhile I might lose video to the computer I'm working on.  Maybe an application has crashed and its distorted my view of the desktop or my monitor loses video connection.

So I need to restart the computer, but I don't want to just turn off the computer.  I want to try to gracefully restart\shutdown the computer.

Windows use to allow you to press Control-Alt-Delete and the press ALT-R to restart or ALT-S to shutdown the computer.  WIndows 95 had this functionality, I can't remember if Windows XP had this functionality, but I know Windows Vista and Windows 7 do not.

Please add the underscore back so that users know which key to use in conjunction with the ALT key to restart\shutdown the computer.

I have a tablet PC with a screen that reorients from Landscape to Portrait. Doing so changes the resolution and wreaks havoc on my desktop, causing gadgets to overlap and icons to not reorganize. Causing me and many other to have to reorganize my screen everytime, wasting time and money. Since many features in W7 are designed with tablet pcs (such as the Latitude XT2 a popular government and business tablet), laptops with capacitive touch in mind. I wish to request that microsoft implement a feature that automatically reorganizes your icons and gadgets based on the way you organized them on your last screen resolution or for windows to remember the way you organized the desktop(icons and gadgets) the last time you used the resolution you are currently switching into. Maybe even a double tap to the desktop peek button will reorganize your desktop and vice versa, even though I prefer the automatic approach. This feature may even be useful for desktop users who switch between primary displays.

     Has Code
    JG-EDI
A shortcut created on the desktop to
    C:\WINDOWS\system32\shutdown.exe -s -f -t 00

will shut down the PC easier then going into the Start menu.
    C:\WINDOWS\system32\shutdown.exe -r -f -t 00

creates a restart shortcut.  You will want to add a custom icon to that one.

You can add Shortcut keys to these (ctrl/alt S)

With the way the sleep mode works on my PC, shutting down harddrives and even the CPU fan, I don't bother to shut it off anymore.

Although I have a few minor issues, most of which I have managed to sort out with thanks to the people on this forum, I am generally very happy with the Beta.

My biggest complaint is the none customizable/removable 'Command bar' in Windows Explorer. I would like to see a big button again. like 'forward' and 'back' for 'Up'

Aside from that, not having any drivers issues sold me on Windows 7 the day I installed it.

JG-EDI is talking about being able to shutdown or restart "blind", when something goes wrong and you can't see the desktop.  on XP, I can do this with winkey, u, u.  there's no such combination on win7 that I can tell.

re the menu, I don't know who decided menus are bad and need to be shrunk to an icon.  at the same time, customizable toolbars with icons are bad and need to be replaced with fixed toolbars with text only.  whatever.

Yes barth2k, you are correct, I want to be able to shutdown windows using the ALT keys when something goes wrong and I can't see the desktop.

I'd rather shutdown\restart the computer gracefully rather than just press the reset\power button on the computer when I have open programs running.  You never know when that can screw up something on the next reboot.

Windows use to show Shutdown and the Restart menu options with a underscore under the "S" in "Shutdown" and an underscore under the "R" in "Restart" so that a user knew he could press ALT-S or ALT-R to shutdown\restart the computer after you pressed CTRL-ALT-DELETE.  For whatever reason, that option was removed in Windows Vista.

Currently when you press CTRL-ALT-DEL you have to click on the arrow next to the power button in the lower right hand corner and select either restart or shutdown.  Thats fine as long as your screen is visible.  If not, you're out of luck.  They need to enable it so that after pressing CTRL-ALT-DEL you can then press ALT-S or ALT-R to shutdown\restart the computer when the screen isn't visible which happens on rare occasions.

You used to be able to do that, but MS removed that capability.

Does no one else care that the Status Bar in Windows Explorer, doesn't even show DRIVE SPACE FREE?
    It's very awkward and annoying.

In windows 7 there is a problem in connecting windows live messenger through Adsl.
I think it is bug of windows 7.
One more thing windows 7 has lots of problem sometime is not responding.
When this bugs will fix in windows 7 ultimate beta version.

I care as do many others who have posted to this board.

Look at #3 in my post 8 posts above.

Its just MS making changes for the sake of changes whether or not it has a negative impact on the user.

Why show free space on the status bar when it can just regurgitate the information already displayed in the columns regarding file properites.

I doubt MS uses any computer professionals in their research groups when testing new GUI's.  No idea why changes like this are allowed to be made.
