Why new tabs do not get the focus?

This bug is consistent across Win7+IE9 machines: (1) Open IE9. (2) Browse to your favorite page. (3) Click ONCE the "New Tab" tab (rightmost tab). (4) Click the "Home" button. (5) Notice that the new tab remains empty, and the last tab you visited is now redirected to the home page; if you follow the instructions in step 1, that previous page now lost was your favorite page, and now you are really pissed off.

It stands to common sense that if I create a new tab, it is because I want to use it immediately, and going to my homepage (which points to Bing) is the most natural action to follow. Yes, it happens in Safe Mode. Is this a bug (then a correction is needed) or is it behavior by design (which would be a nonsensical choice and a correction would be ideal)?  In case some software can change this behavior (thus opening the door to MS support for saying "is {fill the blank}'s fault"), perhaps IE9 and subsequent versions perhaps should enforce this behavior by design.

There are a few options in IE that might prevent what your experiencing (if I'm reading you correctly):

All of these are under Tools -- Internet Options -- General Tab -- Tabs button

    1. checking the box "Always switch to new tabs when they are created" will bring you right to the new tab you just opened so when you hit that HOME button it will not overwrite your previous tab with your favorite page.

    2. "When a new tab is opened, open :" and use the drop down to make your selection here.  This way you can open the new tab, not lose focus of your current tab (as long as you don't check the box from option 1 above), and have your home page open in that new tab without having to hit the Home button.

These should both be viable options to get what your looking for I hope.

Be kind and Mark as Answer if I helped.

Thanks!!  That was exactly what I was looking for (the combination of the two has to be used). I can only wonder why these settings you describe are not selected by default. Seems so natural... but that is only me; perhaps I am an exception when it comes to using IE9.
