I am trying to upgrade from W7 Ultimate x64 to W8 Pro. Booted into W7, started setup from DVD, says license is for W8 Pro, which is supposed to support upgrading from W7 Ultimate to W8, however I am not given an option to keep my programs. All it shows is keep "nothing" which is not what I am trying to do.
Is it possible to upgrade from W7 Ultimate to W8 Pro and if so what am I doing wrong.
Thanks for suggestions.

You're supposed to be able to do an upgrade-in-place from Win7 Ultimate to Win8 Pro.

Stupid question: is your Win8 DVD the same 64 bit as Win 7?
I'm not sure whether the version of Win8 that can be installed on a blank drive supports upgrades. I'm confused by what I have read about it. (It seems to be like a Win7 full retail license in some ways, and like a generic OEM license in others.)

Figured it out. Looked at the install log file. I have a C: SSD with Windows 7 and a G: HDD with most programs and the /Users directory. The upgrade did not allow for the /Users directory to be anywhere but on C:. After moving it back (not an easy task) I was able to get W8 to run with an upgrade and save installed programs. Typical MSFT shortsightedness with respect to new technology and how power users are organizing their systems to take advantage of SSD technology without spending outrageous sums on a huge SSD. So far everything I have tried is working.NC Bob
