- I would like to add a few coments about windows 7 RC. I have used the beta version with pretty much good success I used the beta for about 4 weeks and was impressed by it, it worked good and pretty fast, drivers for some things where a small issue but it did find the drivers for my mobile while in its usb cradle ! Most programs ran as normal, firefox, thunderbird, my beloved call of duty 4 and some odd programs like the video E server for my cctv recorder and the Ndas driver for my media player, all in all, a pretty nice experiance for a early beta.
What I dont like is the start menu, its not easy to navigate and slows productivity down, its not just me, my wife and daughter and a few friends tried it and said the same thing. The network icon, it needs to be animated !
Then I moved to a clean install of windows 7 RC, first thought was is there two versions of this windows 7 in developement because the RC version is a lot different from the beta ! For one thing, its slow. I use the same programs in the RC as I did in the Beta and there is a difference in preformance. In the beta I had no program hangs or explorer crashes, in the RC I have had 5 in two days. Copying files to a network drive takes a longer time too.
Font rendering ( is that the right description ? ) does work so good in the RC, firefox and thunderbird fonts dont look right, worse without cleartype. This applies also to internet exporer, the black text has a colour fringe on osme pages, it doesnt in the beta version of windows 7. The RC version failed to find a driver for my mobile phone too, some one left it out !!
When I first used the beta version of windows 7 I was almost convinced this would be the one we would use, if things stayed the same and worked the same. Now after a few days on the RC I am considering holding off and using XP for as long as I can. The last few days have left me feeling worn out from all the problems with the RC I have encountered. I know its a RC and maybe a long way to go before its finnished and I am gratefull I have been able to test it but in some respects it seems a backwards step from the beta version. - No, no you can't organize your Start menu into program groups like you could in XP, Vistaline. Nice try with this illustration:
http://xwrmhq.bay.livefilestore.com/y1pNRJyV83NIu76wEYVGosb4XCxoBXPjkQaKxCEu1GrUq5NO9LrsotzeMzJe_vo6k1W6vjsuI7vKxMjAJ_ZVpjy1GUwgzYR1UjV/Organized Start Menu.jpg
But we can clearly see that you've drilled down into the "All programs" entry before grabbing this image, and if you try this you'll find that these menu items don't open when you roll over them. What you've shown is what the starting point should be, instead of the dumb collapsed "All programs" at the bottom of the menu area. So the point stands: The following is still impossible to create in Windows 7.

agreed that there should be a confirmation dialog box
for the shut down option when you do ctrl-alt-del, you have it..just not in the list, but the button :)- Disagree. I am so thankful some of the "are you sure" items are gone. If I click shutdown, do it.
- Sticky note aren't as sticky as they should be :-) When you do "show desktop" or peek at the desktop, sticky notes arent visible, whereas gadgets are visible... I think sticky notes should ve visible as well.
there was already a regression with Windows Defender when it came out of ms antispy beta phase, less options, and now again with the Seven version compared to the Vista version, again less options. You can't even see apps present at startup anymore. Must use a third party or msconfig. And you can't get the icon of defender sitting in the notification area...anymore. And btw you can't pin Defender to the taskbar or start menu. same for Windows update (Win Update could still be pinned in the beta).
edit: my bad, once you allow recent opened stuff to be displayed, the Control Panel pinned icon offers all options again.Disagree. I am so thankful some of the "are you sure" items are gone. If I click shutdown, do it.
never clicked very quickly and by mistake the shutdown button when you wanted to log out ?Martin2244
The color fringe on black text goes way back to Vista RC.
Not sure if this is a driver issue or a monitor-settings issue. For me I figured this problem was long gone, but I have seen it just once so far on 7 RC, never on Windows 7 beta.
Can it be related to what your windows background settings are?I can't agree with regression in Performance; compared to Beta, it seems iimproved.
I'd also say there is a noticeable improvement in Audio Quality over Vista/Win7 Beta.
- "repost from another forum, not edited but take any questions in it as a request for feature to be added instead. in quick summary the right click menu on taskbar buttons is mostly gone and id like move and maybe resize put back there."
--Right click menu for taskbar buttons has been horribly dumbed down, only pin/unpin and close now, does anyone know how to restore the other items such as move, size, max/min ect. really all im teribly interestedin from these is move. the way the right click menu is setup now if i have my 2nd monitor setup to use a different input or am runnign a full screen app like a movie or something, if i open a new window and it opens to that screen i need to remove the full scrren item inorder to move it to the other monitor. if move was still an option in the start bar i could simply click that guy and use the arrows to reposition the window while leaving the full screen app in place.
also kinda typin this out fast so if it doesnt make sense i can try and explain better.--
also i want the classic start menu option back or some close faxsimily. and heres a 4 good reasons
1. I dont like that right side of the new bar that adds recently used items, i have add those items turned off because i lothe it so, and now that left side of the menu is sitting there blank and unused wasting space.
2. I want my folders at the top and my non folders at the bottem in all programs
3. I want my all programs sprawled across my screen if i so desire to sift through what i currently have installed while looking for something to do.
4. I want to beable to move my folders/nonfolders around in all programs as i see fit to
Allow us to remove that left side of the menu if we want (a very minor change i nearly guarentee), turn on the screen sprawling menu that we all know still exists in the os in some form, and make it easier to sort the stuff in all programs and ill be happy and i assume others will also.
also a hotkey for shutdown and restart would be nice again(may exist i duno but im accustomed to win key, u, enter) - I'm happy with the media extender to use with my xbox360 and setup was simple without any issues. The file system needs a little work, as I'm used to tversity as my media file server and its layout catalogue. As I have stated in my other posts, there needs to be a system file manager.
Another thing I was impressed with was the repair on the boot cab files I corrupted twice with a faulty ide cable. I was real worried that I would have to do a reinstall but was able to repair with the disk. This is a big issue with all operating systems not being able to repair corrupted or missing files but win 7 repair option did the job.
As for the interface pesonalisation, yes there needs to be a Xp centric, Vista centric & windows 7 hybrid skins themes available. Windows 7 has the functionality and should support the 3 styles people are wanting on one platform. Windows 7 should be marketed, as three operating systems on the one platform. This would encourage people to see the value to upgrade and keep the Xp Vista franchise alive, as they are great systems. I'm happy with the performance of win 7 on my socket 478 2.8 intel processor,Ati radeon 9550 graphics card 128, soltek x86 32 bit motherboard with 2 gig of ram and will stick to using it until next year.

- The problem is that the SHUT DOWN button is twice (3x?) as large as the little un-obvious arrow button that leads you to logoff/lock/etc. It's too easy to accidentally shutdown instead of lock/suspend.
Disagree. I am so thankful some of the "are you sure" items are gone. If I click shutdown, do it.
I agree. I also like just pressing shutdown without a confirmation.
EDIT: I do have one beef, I hate the default Blur Text™ where the only way to get it sharp and crisp is to edit the registry. I like my text sharp and clear. Blurry doesn't make much sense to me... I want an easy way to turn off all the blurring of the text without having to dig through the registry.- Edited byemig5m Tuesday, May 12, 2009 2:11 AM
- Yep. I hated being interrogated about something as deliberate as shutting down. I didn't accidentally go rooting around under the Start menu and select "Shut down". The new way reflects common sense, because it lets users who usually do something else (like suspend) select that as the default.
- Every time I play openGL games which are heavy on graphics, my desktop gadgets get disarranged after I exit the game. Is there a fix for this?
- I was running on dual boot with XP and Windows 7 Beta since January. I have now enough confidence to do away with dual booting altogether and am running on Windows 7 RC build 7100. (Of course I backed-up all my files to an external drive). The only problem I had with the Beta version was the audio. The sound would intermittently be scratchy and I was never able to resolve it. I am not having the same problem with the RC build. The sounds comes out crisp and clear.
- More inconsistencies in the UI: when you go to the control panel and click for settings for certain properties some of them show up in the new interface and some of them show up in the old fashion pop-up windows. here is an example
http://img148.imageshack.us/img148/5305/inconsistent.jpg
It might be more logical and consistent to pick one of the methods. Integrate everything in to the new interface! Some notices about virtualisation and XP Mode:
1. It will be usewfull to add on the Performance Index page also an check vor virtualisation capable processor. There are some third party software now but seems they gives errors sometimes. And that page is used for give a ideea about what programs are compatible with the hardware. So adding that check will be usewfull, even if it's only a check and not a performance score for it.
2. I belive that you should consider to offer XP Mode also for Home and Home Premium, even if as a BUY option. Reasons ? Well there are a lot of people working at home - so they probably would like having also Media center on the computer, or just they don't need encryption and other stuff in Professional and don't want to buy Ultimate. Also Ultimate is definitelly out of questions when speaking about companies. But some small companies may consider to use Home licences on their computers, but may need XP Mode. I can give as example my company using about 50 XP Home licences, instead of XP Pro, just because it's cheaper and we don't need the extra facilities from Pro.Not sure why they keep trying to bring back the yellow folders (manila folder) for Icons (That should be kept for a classic mode).
Don't like the added Libraries, Thought it was much cleaner under the User name in Vista.
I was really hoping to use PC SafeGuard, sooo disappointed it was gone in RC and sounds like it's not coming back, and Steady State doesn't work in 7 :(.
No "Keep on top" (or not) option in Taskbar settings.
Wish there was some built in settings for overscan / size adjustment for monitors, Have had problems on some LCD TV's and 1080p monitors with HDMI connections. Even Ati's CCC panel doesn't address some of the problems well.
I like the simple shut down with no confirmation. I get people that still haven't figured out that they are not shutting down their Vista when they click on the button in start menu.

- EXPLORER: FREE SPACE LEFT
This has got to come back.
In XP you just click the drive or any folder on the drive and the status bar always shows the free space.
If it can't come back, would you (MS) be so kind as to give us the opportunity to customize the "detail view" at the bottom of the explorer screen? The only options we've got now is Size.
Regards
Rem - Start menu is same as in windows vista, little difference is you can not change it to classic style.
Request Microsoft to change start menu totally different from Windows vista and Windows XP.

Sorry Zeus76, I´ve been asking for this (and many other things) since the beta. And, after reading the yesterday post in Engineering Windows 7 blog, it´s pretty clear what I was already thinking. They said with all letters there: "Windows 7 is DONE".
So, done is done, end of history. We are not going to have back a lot of good things they took away (for no reason).
Now, I´m seriously thinking about one thing: They don´t want our feedback anymore. It´s done? Ok, sell it. No more comments from me.- Yes, the interface is DONE. There will be no more Classic Menu or other big changes. Just small tweaks. I've received a confirmation mail from Steven Sinofsky.
Yes, the interface is DONE. There will be no more Classic Menu or other big changes. Just small tweaks. I've received a confirmation mail from Steven Sinofsky.
Small tweak, that's what it is, isn't it. I'm absolutely not eager to find Classic Menus or other old stuff in 7, but the handy things could be kept, or allowed in the Details Pane of explorer.
Well I won't scream and yell about it, but it makes me wonder which OS the development team uses. When you have to "play" fairly often with huge amounts of files, it certainly comes in handy to see right away where you can place them.- I'am also dissapointed, especially for the classic menu, but that's it. I can live without it, my problem is to make other people to work with it - have to implement this at work in the future... An my company stii use Win 2000 and XP... there are tweaks to emulate but need to much to work on it. Well, is Microsoft decision.
- @ Cristi-M: The benefits of the new OS outweigh (in my opinion) the shortcomings.
- Yes, this is small tweak, and I think that the small things contribute to have a final polished product. But Microsoft will not listen to us. Want proof? Well... this same subject was already discussed:

and maybe in a lot of places I could not find with my very long (10 seconds) search.
But, why listen to customers´s complain? The System is DONE, guys. (even if I and a lot of people still think it´s not... but... ok, let´s pretend it´s done and ruuuuuuuuuush the sellings to erase for all the "Vista" shame, er, I mean... brand. - Who said about feedback? Who said that someone was helpful? Who said that something was changed in W7 since Vista out? Name me any significant change that we have in W7 what is deserved to be called as “improvement”? NOTHING.
As we all see (all - I mean all of us who was screamed to death trying to tell his opinions to MS) nothing “new” in W7.
For God sake, changing interface layout it’s not an improvement, changing windows theme its same useless fuss. It’s like Rubik cube – turn it around you will see different pieces and colors, but its still same cube…
Actually guys just created all this action only to re-sale vista again, and get some money; they just realize that making service packs for “vista” ITS STUPID IDEA. Good marketing, what can I say? Before you could download SP from WU. That’s easy…
It’s like 10yrs old car, some paint, new tires, washed engine and they sale it like a “new” one. Would you buy it???
How to make money from s h I t? Wrap it with flashy, candy-alike cover…
Just take a look on those errors and bsods you see in this forums, they not caused by “new changes” or some new code you may think, it’s because 90% of all testers are newbie’s, left hand don’t know what right hand is doing.
I will give MS 5+ mark, for this “fake” new OS preparation, everything was perfectly planned, they know that everybody likes to be a part of something BIG, to test new OS its kind a honor to everyone, people think they making history, changing the way it should be… what a perfect organization, but it was in perfect time as well, Vista release wasn’t planned so well like this one.
I am not saying that you should not buy it, go ahead if you want, its your money...
MS here is my applause to you, you da man!!!
Just little note from me:
Worked with vista, got error, installed W7 – got same error...
isn’t it explains enough? - Hi All,
I was asked to place this here, from where it was originally posted...
During development of winforms applications on Windows 7, I have noticed that when a Tool Strip Button is in the Checked state, the UI will draw a thin blue box (using default colors and not running Aero as it is in Virtual PC), around the button to mark it as checked.
I am not sure that this provides sufficient feedback to the user to indicate the button is pressed.
I am not expecting a work around etc, just providing some UI feedback.
Katie - @ Warel and kuklachev
First of all, in my opinion this is the best OS Microsoft has ever made. It is not just a revamped Vista, and it certainly isn't just eye-candy.
Now for the critical things: of course they reused parts of the code, you didn't want them to reinvent the wheel didn't you?
But in no way the 7 project could have been used as a service pack for VIsta just for the sake of making money.
They (MS) do listen. You want proof? THEY MADE 7 because Vista wasn't good or at least not perceived as good.
7 is faster, looks good and once you're used to it, more efficient to use than any other Microsoft OS.
Now don't let me be misunderstood, there are problems and shortcomings. And I certainly would have liked to see them gone before the RC came out. I think some people at Microsoft are under a lot of pressure to get 7 out before X-mas. Good for them if they manage to do so, but that shouldn't be accomplished at the price of neglecting silly mistakes.
Regards
Rem - I have been using W7 for more than a week now. And so far it works great for me. I think after some polishing it will be quite ready. There are some minor details that the developers may want to attend to. For instance, in the current version, the preview of the currently running apps are detached from the icon on the taskbar. There can a visual indicator as to which app is being previewed (There is actually an indicator, the icon flashes, but it is a bit subtle). Just to illustrate the point. lets say for some wierd reason you have 2 internet explorer icons on the taskbar next to each other, or seperated by another icon, you wouldnt be able to tell which one is being previewed, easily.
- Edited byirfanbulu Tuesday, May 12, 2009 1:38 PM
if you asked, they do listen, use it ...
(but i like it and thanks god we have it)As mentioned before, there is still a big bug in the Windows 7 RC explorer for using it as a FTP client. It is NOT possible to upload files, in case of a file upload you get an error message "An error occurred opening the folder on the FTP Server. Make sure you have permission to access this folder." "Details: The handle is invalid", and yes even when you have enough rights you will get this exception!
Second, there is still an interface bug within Vista for using explorer as a FTP client, and I want to test this with Windows 7 RC to see if it is fixed, but I can't test it now because as the bug described above. But I think this bug is still around!!!
The problem: When you try to upload and overwrite an existing file on a FTP-server you will get the "Copying..." window saying "Calculating the time required to upload the files." which appears exactly above the dialog that asks you if you would like to overwrite the existing file. This is VERY irritating, you first have to manage to get that dialog on the fore ground before you can click the "Yes I will" button. Why isn't this fixed in Vista already!!!! Am I the only one who uses explorer as a FTP client...and what about testing...
But probably this won't be fixed and this bug will be in the final release.......I almost have to cry...The Shutdown button shouldn't shutdown the system without asking "Are you sure you want to shutdown?"
Yes, absolutely needed. I already did a shutdown by accident.
Shutdown should show up as an option when I do a ctrl-alt-delete (it doesn't)euThe benefits of the new OS outweigh (in my opinion) the shortcomings.
@Zeus76:
Zeus, don´t take me wrong in here. I think Win7 is a very good operational system, too. But I also think it´s no possible to MS to leave a lot of know bugs (even Vista ones) in this version of windows.
But I wanted to see the small annoyances out of the system before it´s "done".
There are just so small things, and I think they could be fixed maybe with a week or less of work (take the windows explorer for example: they don´t even need to write the code, it was there, and working fine in xp, just use it!)
This is the main reason for my complain. I KNOW they can do a better system, but they say: "Its done", and refuse to listen.

A thing that windows explorer never did well (from 3.1 to W7) was to copying a large number of files.
Any error did:
-Stopped copying entirely until the user did some feedback. The right thing should be to continue copying non problematic files in background, and start a list of problematic files, so the user decides about it later. It make lost a lot of time.
-Sometimes an error stops entirely the process of copying, and resume it is so problematic that the best solution is to delete the already copied files, and start again, with the risk of encounter a new error.
Also, it should exist a way to compare differences between directories, and copy only the different files.- Edited byGuillermo.Marraco Tuesday, May 12, 2009 6:10 PMfixed some typos
A think that windows explorer never did well (from 3.1 to W7) was to copying a large number of files.
For me, Windows Explorer is the weakest thing in the Windows (in general, not only seven).
It provides a very poor control of the file operations. Like no pause, no queue, no file crc check and so on. They will not get it better in windows 7, and its sad for me. Right now, I´m looking for a good replacement for Windows Explorer.Disagree. I am so thankful some of the "are you sure" items are gone. If I click shutdown, do it.
never clicked very quickly and by mistake the shutdown button when you wanted to log out ?
No, not really. That is a deliberate action.
If anything, I would like the extra space in my start menu to allow me to place extra buttons for other functions (Sleep, Log Out, Hibernate, etc.). All of which are one touch.
This is why the RC was relased - to fix bugs. Even if there will be no noticeable changes for interface or the rest of programs, the RC was offered to help find bugs and fix them before the RTM. So minor tweaks and bugs fixing - that's all what they will made. And you may report your problems here, but also your sistem send problems encountered to development team automatically. Of course it cannot etect all the problems you believe you have, so report is still good. But probably this won't be fixed and this bug will be in the final release.......I almost have to cry...
1.Lockups when monitor comes out of sleep with taskbar on Auto-Hide
More than a few people have this problem i've found turning Auto-Hide off on the taskbar fixs this problem, or leaving the mouse on the taskbar when Auto-Hide is on stops the problem to, but it should be fixed just though i would point it out so it can be fixed.
2.Animate windows when minimizing and maximizing slight lag when closing windows
It seems abit jumpy i've tryed change video drivers its still the same, i just disabled it for now.
3.All Programs Menu Glitch
In all programs the last item in the list displays for a second then goes away, heres a screen shot of what im talking about http://img510.imageshack.us/img510/7481/20838512.png you can see the last icon hanging over the 2nd blue line because it hanging over the start menu will remove it leaving it blank.
When you have 12 or more items in the start menu's right-side thats when you see the bug. 11 items or less and the bug harder to see.
4.Changing Recycle Bin Icons Stops Desktop Refresh
When you change the default Recycle Bin Icons to ico's it stops the Recycle Bin from refreshing, this doesnt happen with dll files.Disagree. I am so thankful some of the "are you sure" items are gone. If I click shutdown, do it.

if i refresh, then shortcut back again
this happend when uac is disabled (set to minimum)

New bug:
(USB pen) drive partition Label is not recognized, and cannot be changed. XP keeps reading it well.- Edited byGuillermo.Marraco Tuesday, May 12, 2009 7:31 PMchanged 'Name' for 'Label'
- Comment regarding thread ODBC (32-bit) Control Panel Applet does NOT manage 32-bit ODBC
The "ODBC (32-bit)" Control Panel Applet does not list "Relativity Client" from "Liant Software Corporation" v6.01.77.30 in Win7 7100 x64.
This app does: C:\Windows\SysWOW64\ODBCAD32.EXE
- I have to admit...I'm an XP lover.
Downloaded RC 7100 maybe a day or 2 after it became available. I think it was a week ago this last Friday that I first installed it. The first week...was kinda rough. The installs went okay. Ran into a few problems here and there, some as a result of my doing, some not. I'd work them out, then some others would come about.
I had lots of stuff on my aux HDD's when I had XP running. Thought I'd be a good idea to back all that stuff up so I could wipe them clean and that's what I did...5 hours worth of wiping. Got them formatted. Reloaded an image of XP so I could lock my aux HDD's down a bit to help Windows 7 from dropping gobs of restore points on them. Wiped XP off, reformatted, and then unplugged all my aux HDD's. Installed Windows 7 with one 1 hard drive. Best install I've got yet. Did all the updates and a few tweaks. Plugged my aux HDD's back in. Windows can see them, read them and erase them...that's it.
Now I'm an XP and Windows 7 lover. - in beta version of win7 log on screen was quite darker and nice.. but in RC its bright blue.. which seriously dont attract much... it will be better if there will be an option to change log on screen background image.. i normally use darker themes.. and bright blue just dont go wid it.. i havent felt this in beta tht log on screen is darker =).. but now when i used RC then i realised this...
- Just cant keep myself commenting on this :-) Caption buttons are truly ugly :-) I just wish that there were two or three more choices for these buttons.
- Upgraded a few days ago to 7100 RC from Vista Home Premium. I asumed the risks. Now, I wont say about what I like, but what I dont like. If I dont say about it, means I like it or at least its not that bad. However I like the new taskbar :)
Now my two cents, about two general categories of problems :
1. compatibility with other apps, especially older games. For example, even a 90's game that still managed to work okay under vista but not under 7. I tried with older vista nvidia drivers, but same problem, so I think it must be an upgrade issue or more probably the new DX version mess. And there are more examples, some didnt work correctly (more or less) under vista too. And we dont expect updates from such old software, so DX should ensure compatibilty.
2. interface personalisation/flexibility. 7 is a step ahead, but I think there deserves a rethink of the internal implementations. Examples :
a) some of us dont like the bluish color of the menu bar (the one for example from notepad etc...). You CANT customize from interface so you need to edit (yes, some sort of hack) the theme files if you really are mean about it. or leave it. why cant easy customize ? (dont mind, its a rethorical question)
b) also see the example from a post above with the logon screen... it should be easy from interface.
c) this one even worse : the taskbar is more transparent than in vista but the start menu remained more dark due to the white text; but its lower part had been made lighter to blend/transition with the taskbar. now this works when you have the taskbar on the default lower part of screen. but many people use it above, due to practicability reasons. now, the taskbar is above start menu, but the start menu remains unchanged so it no more blends. and the rounded corner remains up too but this not a big deal. If you try to remedy the problem yourself (editing as above), when you see those images/png's you see the disaster and understand why you give up and dont event think MS will do something : because who originally designed it had nothing in mind about flexibility.- Edited byCornel001 Tuesday, May 12, 2009 9:57 PM
- I think that drag & drop functionality on Taskbar should be improved.
For example, if I move (via drag&drop) a file from, let's say, the Desktop , I have to drag the picture to the taskbar (1), wait for the Explorer window to show up (2), then drag the picture back again to the explorer window (3) and finally drop it there (4).
I say it's much too much work for something as simple as that.
I think it would be better if I could drag&drop a file right onto the taskbar icon, and then the file would be moved to the most recently used folder (or the ONLY folder if there is just one open), without any waiting for any windows to open.
Regards, Kristaps. - Getting blue screen of death while watching videos on Hulu.com (IE8).This is the third time it happened. Reproduced the issue on two different laptops. It doesnt happen all the time. And I cant seem to correlate it to any activity other than Hulu.
in beta version of win7 log on screen was quite darker and nice.. but in RC its bright blue.. which seriously dont attract much... it will be better if there will be an option to change log on screen background image.. i normally use darker themes.. and bright blue just dont go wid it.. i havent felt this in beta tht log on screen is darker =).. but now when i used RC then i realised this...
I first didn't bother reading this post, and then for some reason I did, and guys that's absolutely right: the new login screen is absolutely ugly. As MS doesn't let the user change this easily, unless using unrecommended packs found on the internet, could you change this RC login screen, it's really too bright, and it's not nice. Looks like an ad against global warming or something...don't think, just change it :)- Please remove the explanation page which is printed when you are printing on both sides. 9 times out of 10, I am printing this way just to spare some paper. I can't stand my printer printing one more sheet each time. Just put those instructions on screen, print that sheet the first time only or even remove that at all and leave the user without instructions - still better that printing that damn sheet each time!
This was also in the beta. Maybe also in Vista (owned that), but in any case this is a good occasion to remove that!
EDIT: Lol, I got a word censored for misspelling "sheet". To foreigners this kind of mistake may well happen... :-D EDIT: I really like the new login screen, much more than the beta, but I agree that it should be made a bit darker. The same image or a very similar one, but made a bit darker, would be the best.- Edited byBlack Antitoon Wednesday, May 13, 2009 1:23 AM
- And it would also be nice if Middle-Click on show-desktop would open Flip3D.
And it would be just pure win if we could re-map Windows's keyboard shortcuts (every other program natively lets us do that, why not Windows?)
Regards, Kristaps. - Kristaps -
1.) Middle click CAN be programmed to do that - via your rodent's software. If you've got a Microsoft Mouse, download the Intellipoint beta software. It will allow you to program the middle click (scroll wheel click) to trigger flip3D.
2.) Remapping Windows shortcuts would be a support nightmare. So there you are, on the phone with tech support. He tells you to hit Winkey-E - but you've mapped that to launch something other than Windows Explorer. Whoops. Don't see that happening.

HocLiking W7 right now...
Can see myself upgrading from XP to the W7 RTM.
Now that people routinely have a large quantity of RAM in their computers.
Would like to see a built in RAMdisks. At the moment I've resorted to using some 3rd party stuff, which works, but it would be nice if this was a normal feature. The drivers appear to be all there still (as they were also in Vista, XP, 2K) but still no method of actually creating an actual RAM disk.
Would also like to see more customisation available during install.
I like to partition my HDDs when I install windows. With XP I routinely end up moving the profiles to a different partioning (and a different folder name) and setting the default program files location to another partition (often also with a different name). At this stage I use nlite which allows me to customise this stuff at install, of course this means I have to get my partitions all sorted from the start, but what "serious" home user doesn't anyway?it will be better if there will be an option to change log on screen background image..
And who stop you to make the change ? W7 logon backgroud IS customizable. You can change it manually or there is also an changer available on the net.
1. Type regedit in RUN or Startmenu search box and press Enter. It'll open Registry Editor.
2. Now go to following key:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Authentication\LogonUI\Background
3. Now in right-side pane, change value of OEMBackground to 1
4. Now go to following folder:
%windir%\System32\oobe
Here %windir% represents "Windows" folder present in the system drive where Windows 7 is installed.
5. Create a new folder "info" inside oobe folder. Then again create a new folder "backgrounds" inside info folder. So the final path would be:
%windir%\System32\oobe\info\backgrounds
6. Now copy any desired wallpaper to this new "backgrounds" folder but following conditions must be followed:
The image name must be backgroundDefault.jpg.
The image size must be less than 256 KB.
The image format must be JPG.

OK, why are you using interface themes that have transparent components? Transparency has to be one of the dumbest gimmicks ever introduced to a windowing UI. Would you read a book printed on transparent paper? Why would you want to see a bunch of ____ behind text you're trying to read?

If you switch to one of the basic themes, you can customize the color of most elements in the UI.- I Have downloaded and been using Win7 RC (64bit) for a week or so now. General experience is really good. Much better responsiveness than with Vista sp1 on the same hardware. General performance though is probably about the same, but the user experience is improved in win 7.Few issues - I am using a dell optiplex 745 and the drivers for the intel graphics card (q945 I think) that came with windows 7 didnt support the aero interface, so I installed the vista drivers which supported aero fine. The machine becomes very unresponsive after a few days without a re-boot.Its a bit random, but it can be very slow to come out of hybernation, screen, mouse and keyboard can take a minute or two to get powered up and working. The interface is visually very nice with thumbnails of running apps, windows fading out etc, but after prolonged use it just get extreamly distracting with windows fading to transparent and back. Also its extreamly anoying that when you drag a windows near the edges of the screen it auto re-sizes or becomes full screen. Guess I just need to get used to it....oh and pptp VPN appears really flakey - it drops the connection so way too easily.Sam
A good solution would be what Ubuntu has sinces ages ago. When you click on Shutdown, you see a dialog with a cancel button which says "Shutting down in 10 seconds". If you are turning off the computer, you don't care if it takes 10 more seconds, and one click is enough. It should also be possible to disable that though.

Heather Watson - Change request - taskbar mouse hover delay
(Too late for RTM, but I'm hoping you'll "stack" it)
Place the mouse pointer over an icon in the taskbar for a non-running program. It takes ALMOST TWO SECONDS for the tooltip with the program name to appear.
Now that my most commonly used programs are merely icons - without labels - in the taskbar, I occasionally need to remind myself what program an icon represents. A 1.5 to 2 second speed bump is a damn nuisance.
Thack I'm dissapointed that there has been no reprieve for the W2K style deterministic start menu. Not having that possibility has however encouraged me to seriously try 7's nonahedral monster menu, and although I can use it, I can't say I've grown to like it. Nonetheless, a few tweaks could improve its usability:
- Clear and detailed information on exactly how the search mechanism looks for programs, documents etc, with a meaningful commitment not to change this arbritarily or without notice.
- Information on the rationale for the multiplicity of panes: the help system is silent on this.
- A keyboard shortcut to open the menu with the pinned programs pane in focus - ideally Ctrl-Esc. So I could start my pinned programs with Ctrl-Esc <letter> Enter, as with the classic menu. This is much easier than using Winkey <number> which requires the user to calculate the offset of the desired program.
- An option to tear off the search box and add it to the main taskbar.
- An option to cancel the fat icons at the top of the the upper-right pane. This peculiar inversion of the icon->tooltip relation adds nothing to my understanding of the current selection - it's sufficiently far into my peripheral vision to be obtrusive without being informative.
- It's madness to have shutdown switch off without prompting - this is especially irritating when (for instance) it's clicked accidentally in the midst of composing long posts to internet discussion fora. It would be easy to fix this by having [Shutdown] and [Shutdown!] options, the former (the default) to require prompting, the latter (bloodcurdlingly adorned as appropriate) not.
It would be good to know if MS has posted a defence of the decision to drop the classic menu. I haven't seen anything, except perhaps (somewhat cryptically), The Checkbox: The mating call of the loser by Raymond Chen.
- Ok, so what is up with all the spacing in between the quick launch icons. Is there away to get the classic quick launch buttons back. I use them everyday. The way Windows 7 is spaced, by the time you get everything in the quick launch you will need, you wont have any room for the windows! I know they are trying to make it more "touch" friendly, but what about us that do not have a touch screen.... I want the classic quick launch option please!
Heather Watson Change request - inconsistent behaviour when clicking a stacked icon in the taskbar
(Too late for RTM, but I'm hoping you'll "stack" it)
This refers to stacked icons in the taskbar (representing a program with multiple windows, of course). For these, hovering over the icon, and clicking on it, do exactly the same thing (bring up the little preview pictures). This is in direct contradiction to the behaviour for non-stacked icons (a program with just one window), in which hovering over the icon shows the preview, and clicking on the icon brings that window to the foreground. In other words, for non-stacked icons, the hover and click have two distinct functions, both of which feel entirely logical and "smooth".
The obvious question is "OK, but which of the windows should be restored when clicking on a stacked icon?". The answer has been arrived at independently numerous times by different commentators: the most recently opened window. This makes good sense ergonomically - there's a good chance that the most recently opened window is the one most likely to be wanted, anyway.
So, the functionality for stacked icons should be: a/ hover shows the preview pictures; b/ click restores the most recently viewed window.
This would then "feel" totally consistent with the behaviour for non-stacked icons, and would be a great shortcut. And again, it has been suggested countless times by some very thoughtful and intelligent commentators.
Here's how the taskbar icons would work, in summary:
a/ Non-running program
Hover: show program name in a tooltip
Click: launch and bring to the foregroundb/ Running program, single window
Hover: show preview picture
Click: bring window to the foregroundc/ Running program, multiple windows (stacked icon)
Hover: show preview pictures
Click: bring most recent window to the foregroundTotally consistent, fast, "smooth", and suggested by countless commentators. It is simply better than the current arrangement, and yet is consistent with it and must be perfectly feasible to implement.
Thack- Edited byThack Wednesday, May 13, 2009 4:33 PM
Change request - please give us horizontal scroll in the folder pane in Explorer
(Too late for RTM, but I'm hoping you will "stack" it).
Open Explorer and try to navigate to a deeply nested folder using the folder pane on the left of the window.Problem! The pane no longer has that auto-sideways-scroll that was introduced with Vista, but nor does it have a horizontal scroll bar. The only thing you can do is drag the handle to make the pane wider. Messy and inelegant!
Thack- Change request: allow gadgets to be "guarded" from maximised windows
(Too late for RTM, but I'm hoping you'll "stack" it).
Gadgets can no longer be "guarded" from maximised windows. I understand why MS thought the gadget bar - introduced with Vista - was superfluous, but it had one great feature: it made sure gadgets were (or could be) always visible. Now they are hidden whenever you maximise a window.
It's no good setting the gadgets to "always on top" because that hides parts of the window you are working on. Now, I can no longer glance across to the calendar, the weather, the exchange rates, the news feeds; I have to un-maximise the window I'm working in, or steer my mouse to the Desktop Peek button. Time wasted! It's just another clunky speedbump, and totally unnecessary.
Thack - Change request: allow msconfig.exe window to be resizable
(Too late for RTM, but I'm hoping you'll "stack" it).
The msconfig.exe window is too small and cannot be resized. This is particularly apparent on the Startup tab, where almost all the entries in each column are truncated.
Making the window resizable would be a great improvement.
Thack - There are many windows and boxes/lists inside windows, that should be resizeable. I mean those native to OS/IE8 etc. Sometimes for example you can see only a few items at once , altough a standard monitor by nowadays would allow you to see much more items/info at once.
Change request: don't stall bulk file operations on each error
(Too late for RTM, but I'm hoping you'll "stack" it).
Perform any operation in Explorer involving a lot of files - a bulk move, a bulk copy, etc.
If one of the files brings up an error (e.g. read-only), the whole operation stalls. This is infuriating if you go away for several minutes and expect the job to be done when you get back.
Instead, please queue up those files which need prompts to be answered, whilst continuing to process the other files in the background. That way, when you get back to your PC, only those files which need user input will be waiting.
Thack- I echo comments others have made. The RC release does seem to perform slower under load than the 7000 build I was running. It seems about even with XP on similar tasks, whereas before it was noticeably better at memory and CPU management. How does the RC get worse than the beta?

This hasn't changed since MSDOS 1.0. I don't expect it to miraculously appear between RC and RTM :)But please, please, can we at least have the free disk space and total file size back? Please somebody from MS explain what is the major malfunction here? Who thought this was a good idea? Did some, um, person (I'll resist the urge to call a spade a spade) say in a test group that numbers are scary and remind them of high school math class so the win7 team decided to purge all numbers from the interface? Oh wait, they left a number in the product name! The horror, the horror!Sorry for the snark, but I think derision is the proper response to this idiocy.Seriously, did you change something in the file system that made calculating free space and total file size too costly? What gives? We're still using NTFS, which has been around since windows 2000 I believe. The sad truth is MS really doesn't have to do anything at this point. After dumping on Vista, the PC industry is ready to declare win7 a success by virtue of its not being Vista at launch. Most reviewers just go through the checklist of the big feature items, like XP mode (never mind that most people will not purchase the edition that has it or have the necessary hardware) while ignoring these nitty gritty usability issues that effect users on a daily basis. To all forum users:
I had previously installed Win7beta on my secondary drive some time ago and was very impressed with its performance
Please use this thread to note any comments that you have about Windows 7 Release Candidate (RC).
I downloaded Win7RC on day 1 of public release and installed it almost without problems. There was a noticable pause? in the installation around the time of asking where I reside and what type of keyboard I use. It appeared to last several minutes with no discernable disk activity. But it eventually continued with no action required by me.
I noticed that loading times for Win7beta and Win7RC were initially pretty similar; but now that I have my programs loaded Win7RC is noticably slower to load. Response times for web pages seems slower than Win7beta; not a very scientific term I know but..!!
I was impressed enough to wipe my main OS [XP Home] and install Win7RC as my main OS and demote XP to a secondary computer as a back up with a copy of all my files.
Overall I am very impressed with the OS but because I was only an occasional user of Vista I still have to think where everything is..??
My only personal faults with Win7RC are that my Dazzle TV stick, my CanoScan 3200F scanner and my Creative NX webcam don't work. On the plus side my Gigabyte ethernet NIC works, where it didn't on Win7beta.
I was triple booting [all on separate drives] XP, Win7beta and Ubuntu 8.04; but having XP & Win7 inside the same pc meant no system restores in 7beta. So now I have had to relegate XP to a separate pc and triple boot [still on separate drives] 7RC, 7beta and Ubuntu to safegaurd my restore points.
I cannot network my Win7 pc and my non-Win7 pc's [I think] so I cannot network print now..?? If I have got that wrong I will be happy to be corrected.
If I can get round to purchasing a new TV card and a new webcam that work with Win7 I will probably purchase a copy of Win7OEM.
As to when I do that remains to be seen. I would need manufacturers, Microsoft included, to produce either new equipment compatible with Win7 or drivers that are guaranteed to work. I can get over my older equipment not working now, but when I buy new things I want a guarantee that they will work, not a possibility.

4. Sometimes "Games" folder is visualized in wrong without "group by", sometimes with it... (also the personalization of the link in this folder that is leaved compared Vista (NOT HAPPENS FOR NOW)
The problems of this folder are these now:
a. If you open it is like this: http://img18.imageshack.us/my.php?image=gamesbug1.jpg
If you reduce like this: http://img18.imageshack.us/my.php?image=gamesbug2.jpg

b. Why if I cut and paste an icon of a game from desktop to Games folder, the icon remains on the desktop? (NOT FIXED)
This produced a strange effect in Windows 7 Beta ( http://img261.imageshack.us/my.php?image=transparenticon.jpg ) and it's a little bit fastidious... (NOT HAPPENS FOR NOW)
5. Sometimes personal image on start menu is visualized in wrong way (it's multiplied, or all transparent)... (FIXED)

18. When I try to install some program (for example, the setup of latest version of Firefox, 3.0.10), and I want to leave “Always asks before opening this file”, OS hangs for long time… It happens also in Beta… (NOT FIXED)
19. It's impossible to modify a file (for example a .txt file) in an external hd because when you try to save it show "Access is denied"... It's frustrating, you need also administrator right on the program for modify your personal file (also in SyncToy, when it try to replace an existing file, it can't, but if you launch synctoy with administrator rights, it can)... (NOT FIXED)
I used the same image of Windows 7 Beta because the problems is exactly the same, if you want I posted new images of RC, but I think it's useless...
P.S.: why don't implement the strike text on the forum?
Update : the 8 seems to be fixed, but if I open messenger, then Firefox and reduce it, again the problem :(...
the 11 seems to be fixed too, but two external hd, after a while, aren't able to eject :(...
Update #2: I don't know if this problem is caused by OS or by Firefox... When you try to open firefox and launch it twice, the result is:

After Windows 7 RC have nearly damaged my primary external hd, it can't scandisk my secondary because the process sucks 1GB+ of RAM... It's increbile! I thought I had seen everything, but this is an incredible thing!
Update: I've tested with 2GB pen drive (FAT32 formatted), and nothing strange... It only happens with my 2 NTFS external disk (160 GB and 120GB), with any kind of setting in scandisk (http://img245.imageshack.us/my.php?image=hungryscandisk3.jpg)... Stupid fastidious bug, is present since Vista... In the security property of files, old users have no normal name, but string name... It's so fastidious because it seems to be broken... Can you fix it in anyway?
http://img91.imageshack.us/my.php?image=olduserstring.jpg
Preview Folders Not Refresh :
Well, the problem is very stupid... If you enter in a folder with more subfolders, and click on one of these before it load all the previews, it doesn't load the other after, also if I click on the refresh button, or F5... This is the result:
http://img144.imageshack.us/my.php?image=refreshnotworking.jpg
If I remember well, it happens also in Vista, so this is the good occasion to fix it ;)...
Windows Media Player 12 Old Bug:
Hi, I have a problem with Windows Media Player 12, the audio stutters... This is a old bug I've encountered on WMP11 on Vista... Now the problem is less frequently (in WMP11 on Vista, 1 time on 25 seconds, now 1 time on 2/3 minutes), but so fastidious... Naturally I've tested with others player and nothing happens...
In Vista the problem is more notable (http://www.mydigitallife.info/2007/06/13/windows-vista-media-player-wmp11-slow-loading-and-skipping-the-end/), but also in Seven there is this little problem... I like WMP, so I get a little bit nervous when audio stutters :p... Since the Seven is still in RC, there is all the time to fix this bug...
Please fix this old bug...

I absolutely need it. Today behavior has made me lost a looooot of time.
I simply Install another file manager. Windows explorer cannot be trusted with today behavior.- I would also like to give my opinion as a (for a home user) quite experienced XP fan.
Since the day the RC came out, I use it and — in contrast to the 7000 build — I got everything working so far. I like the cool looking, and there are many options for individualizing which I always love. I`m really considering a change away from XP.
But a few things here are REALLY annoying and make life hard for me:
1) The search function. Yeah, maybe it`s half a second faster to click into the static search bar instead of pressing ctrl+f, maybe not. But in every case, the following is big sh.. for me: (I can`t understand why I found no posts about that.)
a) Why isn`t it possible to press a letter in the normal explorer and just get the first item selected that begins with that letter?? Always the search begins automatically, and that is really disturbing, confusing and much too slow!
b) Why can`t the search results be temporarily cached so that I see my old results instantly when I navigate back to the results?? -> VERY time consuming at the moment!!
c) When I open a result in a new window, the location is displayed as e.g. Search "results in Volume (E:) / programs". There is no way to see or at least somehow retrieve the real location of this folder! (primarily because there is no "upwards" button like before) -> Very unclear and confusing! So, and when I open the folder of a result in the same window (also with the rightclick menu), the correct path will be displayed, but then, when I go back, the results are gone (see b)).
d) Why can`t there be better, more specific search criteria like there were in XP? Such as options for search of hidden files etc. pp??
e) When I directly rightclick a result folder, a wrong menu occurs (not for this folder but for the search window). I first have to leftclick it. This behavior doesn`t occur with files, only folders. Somehow strange and unnerving...
2) The explorer window itself:
a) Why can`t there be an attributes box on the left side? The attributes on the bottom are often displayed uncomplete because the window is too small, and it just needs a bit too long to check the missing infos manually afterwards. Also, in the left box I could see a bigger preview than in the file symbols themselves. The extra preview box needs too much space, that`s no opinion.
b) I would find it really nice to have an easier possibility for changing whether hidden files are being displayed or not, e.g. in form of self-definable buttons next to the menu or something like that. - trackpad scroller:
By now, Windows native trackpad/mouse driver should enable me to slide my finger up/down the right side of the mouse pad to start a page scroll. (i.e. like the Synaptic software)
Ian Matthews www.commodore.ca - Here's my "feedback" list so far:
1. need an option to lock down gadgets, and maybe allow some transparency on them. i have to keep dragging my cool looking clock out of the way all the time.
2. i really liked having my recycle bin icon on the quick launch bar instead of the desktop... cant seem to put it there anymore.
3. would like a global on/off button for the indexing. i dont need anything indexed... either im disabling services, or trying to search through an expandable endless tree of folders to uncheck indexing locations.
4. i miss the windows mail being built in. live mail is ok... but i like the built in version better.
5. would like something in the mobility center to set battery charge to less than 100%, i use my laptop mostly on AC power, no need to hold the battery at 100% all day
6. new try icon system is great... leave that alone - So it is not enough that it switches to a dark screen with a warning (and option to cancel) if you have any open apps? The intervening "are you sure" dialog has been (essentially) gone since the arrival of Vista. I am definitely one who doesn't want it back. I've had to shut down far more peoples' XP machines after they hit shut down and walked out than I have heard people complain that they want the box back....
Stephen 2) The explorer window itself:
That bottom space is resizeable. maybe this helps....

Here's my "feedback" list so far:
dont know about why lock down , but transparency works, like in vista, at least on 7100 RC.
1. need an option to lock down gadgets, and maybe allow some transparency on them. i have to keep dragging my cool looking clock out of the way all the time.- Hmm.. Gadgets...
Why can't the CPU gadget (which is funky if a little superflous) be set to show for each logical CPU? i7 920, would like to see what each cpu is doing.
Dual monitors...
Would be nice to have some method of the left right drag-maximise to work on both monitors... not really sure how you'd do this.. but I wanted to maximise two windows on second monitor (half and half style) but have to manual size one...
Can we have W7 remember previous window settings for every window/program. Always have the resource monitor up, and have to reposition it every time I reset computer... Kinda annoying... Happens with several other programs too, but they're all non-windows so I guess I can't complain.
(Love the resource monitor BTW. Best monitoring addition EVER!) - Thank you, Cornel001, that does help indeed :-)
Also, I now found an option for my point 1a. Embarrassing... Pin to taskbar is a complement, but "NOT" a substitue for Quick Launch that is available in Widows XP\Vista.
I understant that you removed the Quick Launch toolbar because you can now pin programs directly to the taskbar. Thats great. I use that feature to pin 3 programs to the taskbar.
However, in Windows Vista I have 22 programs I keep in the Quick Launch toolbar. I AM NOT GOING TO PIN 22 PROGRAMS TO THE WINDOWS 7 TASKBAR. THATS AN OVERCROWDED MESS!!!! With Quick Launch my icons will appear in a pop-up menu when I click the Quick Launch >>
Quick Launch works perfectly in Windows XP and Windows Vista. It NEEDS to remain as an option in Windows 7 and it needs to work exactly as it does in Windows Vista. I can change the size to show a certain number of icons on the taskbar and the rest of the icons will appear in a pop-up menu. Its just a simple toolbar, but works wonders for quickly launching programs. All it requires is at most 2 clicks (in Windows Vista I configure the Quick Launch to show 3 icons on the taskbar and the rest will appear in the Quick Launch pop-up menu so its once click for Quick Launch >> and another click on the program icon). and my program is up and running.
Yes, I do use the new feature in Windows 7 to pin programs to the taskbar, but I only pin 3. I want to be able to enable the Quick Launch as in Windows Vista.
Why would I want to pin a program to the taskbar when that program minimizes to the system tray like AnyDVD? Thats a type of program I would keep in Quick Launch. Why would I want to overcrowd the taskbar with all my programs when I don't run them all at the same time. It just becomes an overcrowded mess especially on the small screen of a laptop.
Its just a simple toolbar and we could even hack it to enable it in the beta of Windows 7, but you have gone out of your way to prevent us from enabling it in version 7100. The loss of Quick Launch is a deal breaker for me. Its incredibly frustrating that MS chose to remove the Qucik Launch as an option that could be enabled especially since there are other toobars that can still be enabled on the taskbar.
I'm not going to go out and spend money on a new OS when it will take me longer to launch programs because I refuse to overcrowd my task bar. I love the pin to taskbar feature, but I want my Quick Launch as well so that I can have my program icons show in the Quick Launch pop up menu so that I don't have to overcrowd the taskbar. There is simply no valid reason for the removal of Quick Launch. Its an optional feature in Windows XP\Vista. If a user doesn't use it, then the user doesn't need to enable it.
- Why does Microsoft still insist on hiding extensions for known file types by default. This is such a huge security risk. Hackers\Virus\Trojan writers will send out emails with an attachment and the subject might be referencing a picture or a PowerPoint presentation. The real name of the file would be Picture.JPG.EXE, but because extensions are hid by default the email recipient will only see Picture.JPG (.EXE is hidden) instead of the full name of DATA.JPG.EXE and then double click the attachment and instead of seeing a picture they just ran an executable that installs a trojan.
Microsoft needs to show extensions of known file types by default! - Some bugs with pinned items on start menu:
Pinning Windows Update to Start Menu basically breaks the pinned items list. I tried to pin Windows Update to Start Menu as I did in build 7000; the pin command didn't show up in the context menu. I tried dragging the link from Start Menu's "All Programs" pane back onto the "Pinned Items" pane. This caused the Pinned Items list to disappear (as in turn into a blank white area). I tried unpinning and repinning a different link from the list; that caused the list to "refresh" itself and become visible again (and Windows Update was in fact pinned). However, as long as W.U. remained pinned to the Start Menu, newly pinned items caused more "disappearing acts" in the Pinned Items list. Unpinning W.U. was the only way to make the list function properly.
Side note: it's still impossible to pin documents to a program's jump list if "Taskbar Properties->Start Menu->Store and display recently opened programs in start menu" is unchecked... which makes no sense. - There is bug in Vietnamese collation. We can not sort data exactly. Here is the exam:
using System; using System.Collections.Generic; using System.Text; using System.Globalization; using System.Threading; using System.Windows.Forms; namespace SortDemo { class Program { // Comparing and Sorting Data for a Specific Culture // http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/a7zyyk0c.aspx static void Main(string[] args) { const string vietAlpha = "aAàÀảẢãÃáÁạẠăĂằẰẳẲẵẴắẮặẶâÂầẦẩẨẫẪấẤậẬbBcCdDđĐeEèÈẻẺẽẼéÉẹẸêÊềỀểỂễỄếẾệỆfFgGhHiIìÌỉỈĩĨíÍịỊjJkKlLmMnNoOòÒỏỎõÕóÓọỌôÔồỒổỔỗỖốỐộỘơƠờỜởỞỡỠớỚợỢpPqQrRsStTuUùÙủỦũŨúÚụỤưƯừỪửỬữỮứỨựỰvVwWxXyYỳỲỷỶỹỸýÝỵỴzZ"; char[] charArray = vietAlpha.ToCharArray(); string[] precomposed = new string[charArray.Length]; string[] composite = new string[charArray.Length]; for (int i = 0; i < charArray.Length; i++) { precomposed[i] = charArray[i].ToString(); composite[i] = charArray[i].ToString().Normalize(NormalizationForm.FormD); } // Sets the CurrentCulture to "vi-VN". Thread.CurrentThread.CurrentCulture = new CultureInfo("vi-VN"); // Sort the values of the Array. Array.Sort(precomposed); Array.Sort(composite); StringBuilder strB = new StringBuilder(); StringBuilder strB1 = new StringBuilder(); for (int i = 0; i < precomposed.Length; i++) { strB.Append(precomposed[i]); strB1.Append(composite[i]); } // Displays the values. MessageBox.Show("Vietnamese alphabetical order:\n\n" + vietAlpha + "\n\nAfter sorting with CultureInfo(\"vi-VN\"):\n\nPrecomposed:\n" + strB.ToString() + "\n\nComposite:\n" + strB1.ToString(), "Vietnamese Collation Test"); } } } So it is not enough that it switches to a dark screen with a warning (and option to cancel) if you have any open apps? The intervening "are you sure" dialog has been (essentially) gone since the arrival of Vista. I am definitely one who doesn't want it back. I've had to shut down far more peoples' XP machines after they hit shut down and walked out than I have heard people complain that they want the box back....

That's right: it isn't anywhere near enough. Start IE. Enter lots of info into a web app . Click shutdown. Lose data.
And it's so easy to fix, either by confirmation or countdown.
The same "hack" works even better in RC. Quick Launch is present in the sistem the same way as in Vista. Just they don't added the check-box to activate - Reason ? They say it was not used enough in beta, according with the automatic feedback implemented in the W7. Here, I have however a mention to say - of course it was not used by many users, but the reason why it was not used IS the fact that THEY DIDN'T KNOW ABOUT THE PRESENCE OF QUICK LAUNCH.Its just a simple toolbar and we could even hack it to enable it in the beta of Windows 7, but you have gone out of your way to prevent us from enabling it in version 7100. The loss of Quick Launch is a deal breaker for me. Its incredibly frustrating that MS chose to remove the Qucik Launch as an option that could be enabled especially since there are other toobars that can still be enabled on the taskbar.
And that because they needed the information of HOW TO, and unfortunatelly the vast majority of people who downloaded and installed the beta and also the RC are not specialists, but most of them are only simple users with very few knowledge, or no knwledge, who installed it to see what is this... They didn't know even to search on the net to see how they can tweak W7. Come on... How many specialists have installed W7 in the Beta - 10,000 ? 100,000 ? Let's say 300,000. But there were about 1 milion of copies... They are in evident minority...Yes, this is small tweak, and I think that the small things contribute to have a final polished product. But Microsoft will not listen to us. Want proof? Well... this same subject was already discussed:

- Still in the RC candiate there is no network activity icon in the taskbar, :( we DO NOT WANT an animation. we want a working activity icon. you can manage to make the screens on the "network adapter" window where you see the other options to repair etc, blink when their is traffic being sent in and out its the little things that make some customers happy. if people are crying out saying it will ruin there precious desktop look then those people can allways turn it off.
having that little try icon like the one that windows XP has gives the user some visual indication that their is some network /internet activity going on with their system.
id like to see the network tray activity icon return to the final build of windows 7 as would every most other people id expect, listen to your customers.. - Not liking the design of the taskbar.
1. When the view for the buttons on my 'quick launch' toolbar is set to large, the taskbar "expands", leaving there a ugly space under the programs tabs.
2. When the view for the buttons on my 'quick launch' toolbar is set to small, there's a pretty big stupid ugly under my quick launch buttons.
suggestion:
for 1, the 'large icon' need not be that 'large', reduce the size by 2 pixels or so will make that irritating space disappear.

I think you are misunderstanding the way it works. IE or Firefox won't open when the downloading window is open because they already are. The download window is in a way an instance of the Net browser(whether MS or Mozilla).
Right click on the taskbar icon and select the application by name to run another instance of the browser.

I understand it, and I already opened both IE and Firefox that way.
Still, it is a bug.
The common end user will find it very annoying, and got extremely frustrating.Agreed Cristi-M! Of course not many people will know about the existence of a hack to enable Quick Launch in Windows 7. They go to enable Quick Launch like they do in XP\Vista and find its not there and are out of luck. Most won't go searching forums for a hack. Heck, not everyone even knows about the Quick Launch in Vista since its disabled by default.
But thats MS logic for you, remove the ability to turn on a feature without hacking and then claim nobody wants it because not enough people hacked it to turn it on. Of course if they really wanted to see if people wanted it they would turn it on by default and then check to see how many people turned it off. Makes to much sense though. Just extremely aggravating since its just a simple toolbar and you can still enable other toolbars on the Taskbar. It would take MS just a few minutes to add the code back and if you don't want it, just don't turn the Quick Launch toolbar on.
I stand corrected, the hack for enabling Quick Launch still works in the RC. Don't know why I had trouble finding it the first time I looked.
For those interested, here are the instructions to enable Quick Launch. Thanks to Ronnie Vernon, a forum moderator, who originally gave me these instructions:
Adding the Quick Launch Toolbar in Windows 7.Right click the Taskbar and select Toolbars/New Toolbar.
In the Choose A Folder window, navigate to:
C:\Users\username\AppData\Roaming\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Quick Launch.
(Where 'username' is the name of the account you are logged on with)
Click Select Folder.
This will add the Quick Launch Toolbar to the right side of the Taskbar.
Right click the Taskbar and make sure that it is Unlocked.
On the Left Side of the Quick Launch Toolbar you will see 3 vertical rows of Dots. This is the Toolbar Handle. Use the mouse to grab that handle and drag the QL toolbar as far to the left as it will go.
Next, grab the Handle for the Taskbar Icons and drag it as far to the right as it will go.This should switch the toolbars.
Next, drag the QL toolbar to the left as far as it will go. This should place it next to the Start Button. Right click an empty spot on the QL toolbar and remove the check marks from 'Show Text' and 'Show Title'.
Finally, carefully drag the Taskbar Icons to the left until the QL toolbar is the size you prefer.
Right click the Taskbar and select 'Lock the Taskbar'.

a) Why isn`t it possible to press a letter in the normal explorer and just get the first item selected that begins with that letter??
Dunno 'bout you, but for me it selects (not searches) by default. Make sure this setting in Folder options is set like for me:
Regards, Kristaps.- one more thing, the middle button click on taskbar, personally i feel that using it to close windows is more useful.
- middle on icon for new instance (like middle on a link in IE)
middle on thumb to close (like middle on tab in IE)
It can't be the other way around - currently this allows to close each window/tab separately via middle-click, and if you launch a new instance, you don't need to point at an exact window/tab (which you do need if you want to close it)
So it's very good as it is now.
Regards, Kristaps. The left pane of Windows Explorer shows tree by default, which could be useful, but actually I had to turn it off, because when I move mouse over it, the [+] icons are shown and hidden, which is very annoying. (I'm using classic theme and all animation is turned off, but looks like this one can't be disabled)
- Middle-click or Shift+Click on the icon (or right-click and click the application's name) to launch a new instance of IE/Firefox/anything ;)
Regards, Kristaps.- Edited byKristaps. Thursday, May 14, 2009 2:37 PM
- My addition/comment to this idea -- it's okay to hide file extensions by default, but there should be an override that .exe/.msi files always get their extensions shown (even when extension hiding is enabled).
Regards, Kristaps. - Why is Folder.jpg considered a protected operating system file. The only way to get Folder.jpg to show in Windows Explorer is to uncheck "Hide Protected Operating System Files". Checking "Show hidden files, folders and drives" won't show Folder.jpg because its considered a protected operating system file. The only use of Folder.jpg that I know of is to store music album art. Various music playing software use the folder.jpg to display album art when browsing your music collection by folder. Doesn't seem right that I need to show protected operating system files when I want to edit album art.

The SSD 30 Gb should automatically host the more used files, as boot files, swap file, and startup files.
Also, it should be possible to force a file to be stored on the faster SSD.
I know that I simply can choose to install some files on another partition, but I cannot guarantee that other users will know how to setup his files and programs.- I just had the strangest glitch when I started windows 7 RC, something that I've never seen with a previous version. When I started the computer and logged in, many (but not all) of my personalizations were gone. First off, I noticed that the icons pinned to my start menu were all blank (showing the default white piece of paper icon), though they were still linked to the right programs. Also, my startup programs failed to start (including desktop gadgets). The system defaulted to using the Arial font instead of the normal one. However, my start menu customizations, background images, and sound scheme were still correct. When I clicked on a taskbar item, the icon would show up again, but the program seemed to have forgotten my settings. For example, Firefox start with a blank profile as if it were a clean install, asking me if I wanted to import anything from internet explorer, and an IM program failed to remember my username and password as it usually does. Windows explorer, however, seemed to remember all my settings when it came to folder views. I restarted the computer, and the problem resolved itself.
I'm posting this here because it seemed unusual to me that so many of my settings would be forgotten, but not all of them. I have no idea what caused this or how to reproduce it, so I'm not sure how much help this will be, but I figured I'd post anyway in case somebody else might have had a similar problem. - TWO PRINT ISSUES:

another thing, can we return our live messenger to an icon in the notification area? it's wasting space having 2 item on your taskbar when running messenger. for one thing, i know it's for the 'combined' taskbar' function, since it will just be one button no matter how many windows. however, i am sure that many people will stick to the 'never combine' options. which will become 2 items...
one more thing, not liking the idea of putting 2 similiar program (say windows explorer) side by side. what's the point of allowing taskbar items to be shuffled when similiar items will stick together no matter what?
MS ppl, try the program called 'taskbar shuffler' it makes your taskbar seem kind of irritating and useless. - There is bug in Language Bar. I've never added Vietnamese Input Language, but it's always shown in my Language Bar, not in the Text Servies And Input Languages dialog, so i can not remove it.

- Note:
alot of people mentioned that windows 7 is faster, actually, was the comparison between:
1. (32-bit operating system) and (32-bit windows 7)
or
2. (32-bit os) and (64-bit windows 7)?
my experience was that, i compared:
1. (xp home) and (32-bit 7)
the 32-bit 7 was significantly more slow than xp home
2. (xp home) and (64-bit 7)
in this case, the 7 is faster
3.(xp 64-bit) and (64-bit 7)
the xp 64 is significantly faster
what i am trying to show is that, when comparing 32-bit os to 64-bit, it's obvious that the 64-bit runs faster due to structual difference.
when compared to XP, 7 loses in its start up time, it takes around 1.5X more time to boot up, but the good thing is, 7's shutdown time is NOT 7 secs, lol.
i am not using vista in my comparison, vista is a hopeless failure.
i complain too much, here's what i like:
1. the gadgets no longer limit to the sidebar.
2. i really love this, the shuffling of items pinned to start menu.
i've mentioned it for the beta version, didnt expect that MS ppl reacted, was really happy and pleasantly surprised when this becomes available for RC.
3. did anyone notice that when your mouse rollover an item at the taskbar, the highlight color moves? sweet!
- It might be nice to include color schemes in windows 7. To illustrate with what I mean with the color styles, I will just use office 2007 as an example. With office 2007, the user has three color scheme options, blue, silver and black. http://img207.imageshack.us/img207/4425/colorschemes.jpg A similar feature for windows 7, I beleive, will be much appreciated by most of us.
Well, Picture Manager needs to store its data (library, tags, whatnot) somewhere, and SQL beats the registry any time ;)1: Having Picture Manager and Movie Maker require SQL is soooooo completely unacceptable
(Actually, if you ask me, the entire Windows registry should be replaced with SQL database(s) [SQLite would be a good choice])

I greatly prefer the USE SMALL ICONS setting.

I beleive developers should be more considerate for people who have many appz pinned to the taskbar. I find the current navigation mechanism a bit inefficient when the taskbar length cant hold all the appz and need to create an icon for you to navigate to the next bunch of icons. And for inspiration, I humbly suggest the ipod interface :-)TASK BAR:

Ian Matthews www.commodore.caNot: You cant move icons from the second set to the first set. Kind of odd!- Edited byirfanbulu Thursday, May 14, 2009 5:28 PM
- SQL is far to large for desktops. Yes, I know the CE version is thinner but still bad. Perhaps a wholesale change from REG to SQL would improve performance overall but that is not the case today... MS should not put SQL on a desktop for "small" apps.
SQL on the desktop is the reason BUSINESS CONTACT MANAGER for Outlook has gone nowhere.
All that bloat... all that patching... no thank you.
SPEED SPEED SPEED! Please :)
Ian Matthews www.commodore.ca - In Build 7000 there was a Start Menu option to show the libraries on the right side of the start menu (this appeared to replace the Personal Folder link/menu in Vista). While at first I was annoyed by this I came to appreciate it. However, in RC1, the "Personal Libraries" option disappeared and the Personal Folder option is back. Frankly I'd like to have both. I like the concept of the libraries but I find I don't use them because they're not immediately accessible from the start menu and having the option to have it on the start menu would correct that. I'm not a fan of cluttering my start menu with various options like Pictures, Videos, Downloads etc... With the libraries accessible from the start menu this would group these together in the same place.
- When I try downloading the x64 version via technet, it takes 1 second and the downloaded iso is empty!
I quite like Windows 7 RC and I normally use Linux.
Just a few niggles:
Keysonic Wireless Keyboard (ACK-540RF) starts up in number lock each and every time. This is not a bios setting to do so and this does not happen when booting into Linux (I have a dual boot).
I can only add toolbars on the one screen on my dual display (Nvidia GF 8600 GTS). It would be great if the taskbar/toolbars could be stretched to span both screens but this does not seem possible.
The new taskbar takes quite a bit of getting used to and looks a bit messy and I can see a lot of users new to Windows 7 who just leave everything default getting annoyed. Some popups, such as approving cookie boxes in Firefox, opens up behind the screen in focus. This probably needs work from Mozilla though.

Motion seconded!
Ian Matthews www.commodore.ca- No offense but what is obvious is that Windows 7 is a RC and that results seem to vary by user. I have found that the Windows 7 x64 RC installation on my new laptop (4gb RAM, T6400 processor) beats all versions of XP and Vista as far as overall performance goes. The Windows 7 x86 RC installation on my two-year old laptop (4 gb RAM, T5500 processor) beats the performance of XP, Vista SP 1, and the Windows 7 x64 RC on the same machine. Granted, I also found that on that laptop, Vista x86 SP1 matched XP's performance for everything except Boot time, Shutdown, and copying large files off my network. When my new laptop was running Vista x64 SP 1, XP only beat it on Shutdown and Boot time. I had blocked out how much I hate XP until I re-loaded it on that laptop as part of an intentional test, upgrading Vista over XP and then Windows 7 over Vista. FWIW, I have also observed that both versions of the RC are faster and more stable than the beta.
My point is that everyone reporting their conflicting performance experiences are 1) almost all relaying subjective experiences, and 2) reinforcing that the RC process is serving its intended purpose as the equivalent of a shakedown cruise. I will also freely admit that I am being subjective too since I am not backing up my experience with numbers....
Stephen - I'm rockin' the large icons on taskbar (<3 them), but I've used small icons in start menu since XP (much more space and looks better too :P)
Regards, Kristaps.
You can do this with a 3rd-party application - the most notable is UltraMon, but there are many other alternatives ;)I can only add toolbars on the one screen on my dual display (Nvidia GF 8600 GTS). And I don't see MS implementing this any time soon.
Regards, Kristaps....
Winrar 64 bit integrated benchmark shows that Win 7 64 bit runs 10% slower than winrar 32 bit on XP 32 bit SP3
2. (xp home) and (64-bit 7)

Win 7 is about Speed and Simplicity.
(Sorry, could not resist :)- The Games folder should go back to what it was in Vista. Now it is just a crippled version of what it used to be since there is no way to add games or edit settings. It is also inconsisten since you can add things to the folder in the programs menu but they won't show up in games if you have games as a separate item on your start menu.
