      Windows 7 (RTM) file backup is giving me the folllowing error in the "show skipped files" log-

      Backup encountered a problem while backing up file
      C:\Windows\System32\config\systemprofile\My Finances.
      Error:(The system cannot find the file specified. (0x80070002))
      Backup encountered a problem while backing up file
      C:\Windows\System32\config\systemprofile\My Finances.
       Error:(The system cannot find the file specified. (0x80070002))

      Two users on my system have created a new libray- "Finances"
      Each has created a new folder in their home dir named "My Finances" and admin has created a "Public Finances" dir in the users\Public home dir with limited permissions.

      The error seems to be saying that ist is expecting there to be a "My Finances" dir in the systemprofile. Why should there be? Only 2 of the about 10 users have created this library and associated "My Finances" folders.

      I solved the problem by creating a folder with the specified name in the systemprofile folder.
      Now the question is why did the system think this folder was required?

      Hi Richard,

      This problem is due to one or more profiles under HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\ProfileList with missing ProfileImagePath.

      To check whether you have missing profiles:

      1.       Open regedit, navigate to the above registry key. (HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\ProfileList). Expand the list

       

      2.       Click on each of the profiles listed. The first 3 profiles should have ProfileImagePath value of

      %SystemRoot%\System32\Config\SystemProfile, %SystemRoot%\ServiceProfiles\LocalService, and %SystemRoot%\ServiceProfiles\NetworkService respectively.

       

      3.       Starting from the 4th profile, the ProfileImagePath should contain path to the user profiles on your machine, such as C:\users\Christine

       

      4.       If one or more of the profile has no profile image, then you have missing profiles.

       

      To work around this, delete the profile in question (Caution: The registry contains critical settings that are necessary for your system to function properly. Take extra caution while making changes)

       

      1.       First, export the ProfileList key for safekeeping. (Right click on the key, choose “Export”, and save it to the desktop.)

      2.       Right click on the profile in question, choose delete.

      3.       Try backup again.

      Thanks, but I saw that post as well. I already checked the profile list and it's fine.
      In fact I had each user in the profile list ( after the first 3) log in to confirm that the ProfileImagePath was correct.

      I think that in my case, the clue is the message -
      Backup encountered a problem while backing up file  C:\Windows\System32\config\systemprofile\My Finances.
      Remember, I created a new library named Finances.

      Also, I just checked and the ~~"Create a system disk image" option in backup also fails with a similar message.

      I have also come across this same error code. However, this is cause by connecting a media extender (xbox 360). When using the recommended windows backup settings, the backup fails. In the c:\windows\logs\windowsbackup folder, a text file contains:

      Backup encountered a problem while backing up file C:\Users\Mcx1-NEO\Contacts. Error:(The system cannot find the file specified. (0x80070002))
      Backup encountered a problem while backing up file C:\Users\Mcx1-NEO\Searches. Error:(The system cannot find the file specified. (0x80070002))


      I can resolve the issue as well by creating the folders in the media extender service users home. However this will cause some trouble for users in the future who cannot investigate on their own. The application log viewer in administrative tools only showed the error code, did not idicate the directories were missing.

      This is a known issue with Media center users. For such users, Windows does not create "Contacts" and "Searches" directories which Windows backup expect to be present. As a workaround, please do the following:
      1. Launch Change backup settings.
      2. Choose the same backup target and proceed to next page.
      3. Select "Let me choose".
      4. Expand the user Mcx1-NEO node in the treeview. Expand "Additional locations".
      5. Exclude the Contacts and Searches directories for the user.
      6. Proceed with configuration and save settings.

      Your advice was very helpful.
      I upgraded from Vista Bus to Win 7 Bus.
      I looked in the registry C:\windows\system32\config\systemprofile
      I found that I did not have the first 3 profiles that you mention

      "The first 3 profiles should have ProfileImagePath value of

      %SystemRoot%\System32\Config\SystemProfile, %SystemRoot%\ServiceProfiles\LocalService, and %SystemRoot%\ServiceProfiles\NetworkService respectively.)"

       
      (Although my 'clean install' of Win 7 on another computer did).

      Instead I had Profile (with 'no value') and Default profile (where the value was my <myname> only, and a sub under Default profile where the value was 'no value'.
      What I have done is modify the Default profile path to put in  C:\Users\<myname> in both the Default Profile and in the sub Profile.
      It has worked, becaued the backup was successful and no longer informs me that my backup did not complete correctly because of the system profile. (And looking at the backup its all there!
      I don't know which entry fixed it, but hey, doing it in both places worked so I'm not going to fiddle anymore.

      Do not use Windows Backup. It's fubar.

      Hi All,

      I beleive the answer is when you add anything else (other than default 4 - Pic, Mus, Doc, Vid) to Windows 7 Libraries.  This could be X-Box or any other folder you choose.  Windows 7 Backup worked perfect for me for months then as soon as I added another folder into libraries I got this error.  Sure enough - remove the library linked folder & all is sweet again.

      I use Win7 Backup to manage my 750Gb of videos & pictures, etc with no glitches at all (until this little & now resolved one).  Still an annoying glitch I suppose but I've now added the folders I wanted as Favourites instead of Libraries.

      I have a little Dell computer, on system backup, Win7 backup wants a Systemprofile subfolder called "Dell".  Should I create such a folder?

      I had the same problem as @Richard.  I tried this.  It allowed my backup to complete without errors.  But it did not backup the problem libraries.  The 1st Answer here (http://social.technet.microsoft.com/Forums/en-US/w7itprogeneral/thread/52d70cd1-5ddb-4b85-9099-fdef5aae0102?prof=required) allowed me to back them up.  That linked thread is the same problem as the initial problem in this thread.

      btw:  the problem libraries seem to be all of my own user-created libraries.  The standard initial default libraries (Documents, Pictures, Music, etc.) were backed up without a problem in the 1st place.

I would like to know why a non-existing folder is being backed up and how do I persuade backup not to try to back up a folder or file that does not exist?

      Thanks Otter for the helpful post.  I created the missing folder and stopped receiving Error:(The system cannot find the file specified. (0x80070002)) when running backup on Windows 7.  Backup now completes successfully
