已答复 can't connect to internet

ASus system ( mother board only) running win7 64bit, and all of a sudden I had a disk error, so I placed in another hdd and reinstalled win7.

INstall went with except for ending where it tried to apply updates I think, and system wasn't responding ( hanging in places like shut down or trying to find network device in computer), so I reinstalled again to fix that hopefully.

I still can't get internet working , nor atm is sound working, but Im pretty sure that is due to fact win7 on fresh install usually seems to have trouble with onboard audio ( realtek here).

So I started checking, and found that (not concerned about audio right now) network card DOES show up just fine ( no yellow or red exclamation etc.) in device manager, my apple computer can connect just fine through my Comcast modem/router combination, yet my desktop here with win7 isn't able to.

I have no idea why, in a system where clearly the network onboard card is seemingly fine would not be able to connect, and given Im not a certified hardware expert, I thought posting here might help with that discovery.

I even tried BIOS,but that seems fine too and chose defaults making sure anything related to networking was enabled.

I called Comcast as well ( and as my apple test seems to verify ) and they said if my computer is accessing internet fine, which it is, then others should be able to as well.

Any idea what might be wrong, and how I can verify it ?

One last thing; in one instance where the 'network card/driver' was trying to diagnose/discover the connection, I eventually got a ip configuration error, but I have yet to duplicate that again, but maybe that will help someone in responding here.

    Thanks so much

    lee

Type System Information in the Search Box above the start Button and press the ENTER key. Select File, Export and give the file a name noting where it is located. Please upload to your Sky Drive, share and post a link here.

Your motherboard predates the release of Windows 7 and the BIOS is dated 2006. When you reinstalled Windows 7 where did you get your motherboard drivers from? Disks provided with a new motherboard frequently contain out of date drivers even at the date of sale!

    Your System Information file reports:
Device PNP Device ID Error Code

Not Available  ACPI\ATK0110\1010110           The drivers for this device are not installed.

Not Available  ACPI\PNPB006\3&2411E6FE&1           The drivers for this device are not installed.

Not Available  ACPI\PNPB02F\3&2411E6FE&1            The drivers for this device are not installed.

Multimedia Audio Controller PCI\VEN_10DE&DEV_0059&SUBSYS_812A1043&REV_A2\3&2411E6FE&1&20              The drivers for this device are not installed.

The Windows Error Reporting service is also reporting that drivers are required for these devices.

    What is your motherboard model?

Please download and run Driver View and upload a copy of the report it produces to your Sky Drive.

I worked on this today, and got it all working.

When I installed Win7, everything went fine, except the system has been very odd, not wanting to shutdown, and other assorted procedures as well.

I did chkdsk and that went totally fine, and when I tried to install driver for Ethernet onboard lan and it seemed to install fine but not work, I realized it might well

be a problem of it having gone bad finally.

I therefore installed a old nic (Linksys) card I had on hand luckily, luckily found a driver for it and now I have internet access. I am now installing updates, and as typical with some onboard chips, the audio isn't working ( common , as you noted) but I suspect the huge update win7 is downloading will fix all of that.

I was busy today or I would have posted this sooner ,,,one of those days here.

Thank you for trying to assist.

If I find other issues ( after update) with anything else, Ill come back here and grab the driver view app and go from there, as it sounds like a wonderful tool ;)

FYI, my motherboard is asus a8n-e.

If all goes well here and I need no more assistance, then thank you so much for trying to help out :))

    cheers

Do not be at all surprised if you encounter more problems with Windows 7 on your motherboard.  The most recent BIOS is dated June 3, 2006 and is primarily for problems in Windows XP and Windows 2003.

The latest ACPI driver was published to support Vista Jun 30, 2007.  I know from personal experience with Asus ACPI driver that it did not work when I installed Windows 7 on one of my old system.

Overall the support even for Vista is extremely sparse.

When you are dealing with a very old system that have no support for Windows 7 it's almost like play Russian roulette - you never know what is coming next!

Without the software drivers and utilites for all the hardware from the respective manufacturers there is not much you can do since Windows 7 will not have the drivers either.

The internet itself. As my prior message noted, I got a OLD Linksys nic  card installed and found a driver, and now with that working Im letting windows update work its magic. I realize bios was never updated, but Im always a bit skeptical about doing that unless its abs. necessary.

    thx

Thx for the note on your experiences, but yes so far I have no red/yellow exclamation marks in device manager so I suspect things will be fine. Everything was fine, until the onboard lan went bad, but that is now fixed as internet is working again, and Im sure with the updates, the audio will most likely as well. I will get a replacement for the audio if not. as I have 2 other slots open.

The shutdown sequence is now also working just fine and smoothly , where before it would hang the system. So far so good anyway--The hdd in that asus system that wasn't working, I put in my current system, and its working fine, so I have no clue what on earth would do that, but maybe the lan chip malfunctioning was causing all sorts of oddities.

If anything else goes wrong, I still have of course the original asus utilities/installer disks handy.

The asus system was functioning perfectly fine, until recently when the hdd failed to respond so I replaced it with another one that works, so given all was working fine, that would lead me to believe that windows 7, even on that old system, had what it needed to function perfectly fine ?

Either way , win7 is updating now so with any luck nothing will fail , but if it does I'll let you both know . I realize the age of the bios and that win7 wasn't really meant for this old of a mobo could be problematic, but then why would symptoms not erupt until so recently ?

    thx

It seems the onboard lan eth and sata connectors have gone bad, who knew.

I tried a hdd that was working before and all of a sudden 'disk failure', in this system Im typing on,and it works flawlessly.

So im using a non sata drive ( I could always get a sata card I realize, but for now no need) and a Ethernet card, and Ive disabled lan in bios

    and all is fine.

Problem solved, and thx for all your help.

I took a look at the Asus support site. There are no Windows 7 drivers and few Vista drivers so essentially the motherboard was designed for Windows XP. There is a later BIOS but it may be better to leave things as they are.

    Hope this helps, Gerry
