     So i installed windows 7 and everything worked great except my dvd drive. Windows does detect it and it installs a generic microsoft driver and i get no errors in device manager. I can see it in my computer and everything appears fine until i insert a dvd into the drive and try to use it. it will run the autorun but if i select to install, the drive stops responding and then freezes up everything else when i try to close the window. If it doesnt freeze up the entrire system i hear a sound like something was disconnected from my computer and the drive no longer displays in the device manager or in my computer and i cannot eject the dvd. also you can hear the drive is spinning constantly and will not stop until i completly turn off the pc, a restart wont do it. I am dual booting vista and windows 7 on two different partitions and the drive works perfect in vista.

    I have googled all over looking for an answer i thought i found one with this http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx/kb/929461/en-us but it did not help either there are no upper or lower filters to delete .

    the drive model is HL-DT-ST DVDRAM GSA-T50L ATA Device , sometimes device manager will show it as this and sometimes just as cd-rom

    I have an ASUS Laptop model x83vm-x1

    Any help would be greatly appreciated let me know if you need any other info

    Same problem has been reported by linux users in ubuntu, may be the same problem with a slightly different model drive.

    I got the same problem with my dvd drive.
    I have an Asus notebook M50vm-X1.
    My dvd drive is GSA-T50N.

    It mostly happens when trying to burn a dvd. The dvd drive stops responding, i cant eject it, and it keeps spinning. I have to shut down the notebook and turn it on to get it working again.

    Hi,

    Check out the link I posted above, the problem you are experiencing seems to be a firmware issue with the LG/Hitachi drives, and can be rectified by switching the AHCI state in the BIOS to "Compatible" instead of "Enhanced". However, be sure to check out the link for a full explanation.

    hello guys.
    i had the same problem on my asus m50vm
    the solution was updating the firmware on the dvd drive
    it is very hard to find on the internet and the manufacturer doesnt provide it to the public
    the solution bigga gave is valid, but temporarily, try to update the firmware, is fairly easy(one click of a button)

    gsa-t50n is a quite common device and new firmwares quite availables
    in my case, I have a gsa-t50l with SR04 firmware
    I solved by finding SR07 (pretty hard to find it!)

    it is not a problem related to windows, I had issue with linux/solaris os too

    after upgrading, I'm accessing the dvd with no issue and with SATA ahci enabled

    hey, guys, any more ideas to make my dvd-rom work ?

    i've tried both changes in bios and  upgrading  firmware - it didn't help
    my device is gsa-t50N and I realy need it  ))

    I have the same problem as in the original post.  Asus x83-vb with LG/Hitachi GSA-T50L dvd.

    It's absolutely inexcusable that there is still no solution to this problem from Microsoft, Asus, or LG.  There are hundreds of posts on the same problem going back to January 2009.  Win7 Professional may as well be a brick as far as my laptop is concerned. 

    I've wasted more than $1,000 worth of my time trying out all of the well meaning but useless advice from the MVPs.  The upper limit/lower limit registry fix isn't relevant, as there are no such registry entries.  Changing the BIOS from "enhanced" to "compatible" results in a BSOD at start up.  It's a waste of time to try multiple clean installs, as well as the advice to do a double install, making a clean install on the first run and an upgrade on the second run.  And no, I'm not going to install an undocumented driver from Russa.

    For starters, Microsoft should modify the Win7 advisor tool to report that a computer with this drive is NOT compatible with Win7.  That would be the truth of the matter, plain and simple.  And it's way past time for MS to stop saying that the DVD drives of this manufacturer's line can be made compatible with Win7 with a download from the manufacturer:

    That is a complete and total falsehood.  There is no download available.

    Microsoft has some bad information on its web site.  MS's compatibility page tells you that the LG/Hitachi GSA-T50L DVD drive isn't compatible with Win7, but that you can go to the LG/Hitachi web site for a free download.  Unfortunately, I took that advice too literally and banged my head against LG for weeks trying to get that update.  Also, went to the Asus web site many times but nothing is posted for my laptop (X83vb, bought 7/26/2009). 

    Finally, I got a really good technician from LG on the phone last Friday.  Real nice guy, very knowledgeable and polite, but no BS.  Just what I like.  He told me that MS's link to LG was a run around.  LG sells its drives to Asus as OEM devices, meaning that any update has to come from Asus.  LG doesn't have a firmware update for the GSA-T50L and never will. 

    So, I started using Google to search within the Asus support web site, bypassing Asus's indexing.  Turns out that there is a page that has firmware updates for my GSA-T50L and FIFTEEN other drives:

    The procedure was very easy for the T50L.  Just download the firmware update to the desktop.  It's an .exe file, double click it and an installer opens.  You are offered to update from the SR04 version firmware to SR09, together with the usual warnings to close all other applications and not to power down the laptop during the firmware update.  After completion, you restart.

    I now have a fully functioning copy of Win7 and all of my previous problems with the DVD drive appear to be gone.  There are no crazy fast spins that can't be interrupted;  I can boot off of a DVD;  and the laptop doesn't lock up.  The real test would be to install MS Office or Photoshop CS4, but I just haven't had time for that.  I'll post back if any unexpected problems arise, but for now I consider my problem to be solved.

    Thank you very much for your help! I had all sorts of trouble with my DVD drive, from not being able to write my CD's and DVD's to that continuous spinning after a while of playing something from a disc.

    I've now upgraded to SR09, and everything seems to work great....I can finally write CD's without feeling that I'm playing the lottery, hehe :D
