Windows native backup not completing backup to external USB drive

I am unable to complete a backup of my windows 7 computer using native backup to a USB portable hard drive. The details of the error message are: the request could not be performed because of an I/O drive error. Backup location: Iomega_HDD (F:) error code: Ox8078002A
it appears as if Microsoft backup is not compatible with many external drives. In a Microsoft support document Microsoft states it is up to the software developer to update its application to make it compatible with the hardware. Wouldn't this be Microsoft? This is after all backup which is crucial tool for data integrity.
Does Microsoft have an alternate backup program or at least a fix?

No it is only 1TB.

Have you tried the update? If not, please try it and test again. I assume the Built-in Back up tool is not able to support Advanced Format Disk thoroughly.

Hi Juke,
No I am afraid there are still error messages even with service pack one. Which update are you referring to?
