General DiscussionThe Definitive ATI Compatability Thread (from Radeon 9500 until X2100)

I am writing this thread to try to bring all the ATI issues into one thread, the first thing I want to address is All ATI devices starting with Radeon 9500 up until the x2100 series, including mobility variants, I have narrowed this down to several options that should work for all of you, maybe a moderater will help me and make this a "sticky" if I present this right.

    Choice Number 1
Since the beta drivers were dated earlier than the drivers included in the RC release of Win7, Windows Update will not install the drivers for your card, The work around involves searhing their catalog of updates and telling Win7 that these are the drivers it must use. You can either search their catalog site at catalog.update.microsoft.com , this site doesn't tell you if a driver is for 32 bit Win7 or 64 bit Win7, in the case of these drivers the smaller file with the same version number is 32 bit, you must then extract the files with any utility designed for extracting *.cab files. If you have any trouble extracting the files but no errors downloading them shorten that long file name first, windows file system has trouble with ridiculously long folder/filename combinations or download from Rapidshare for 32 Bit Version or 64 Bit Version

Once you have the file downloaded and extracted you must follow these instruction or Win7 will not install the drivers as the generic drivers it uses by default has a newer date. Install by going to device manager -> right click on your display adapter -> select "update driver software" -> select "browse my computer for driver software -> select "let me pick from a list...." -> select "have disk" -> select "browse" -> browse to the folder where your device drivers are located and start at the top, keep selecting inf files until one supports your device, and install that driver

    Choice number 2
install the latest version of the ATI Display Driver designed for your device either from ATI for desktop cards, or drivers with modified inf files for Mobility cards available in 32 Bit Version or 64 Bit Version
Next I will put up something for pre Radeon 9500 cards, most of these have been tested, if you have troubles let me know and I will do my best to update the thread...

Next I have a 32 bit Windows Vista driver for the Radeon 7200 - Radeon 9250 era these were extracted from Windows Vista and are not available on the Update site as far as I can tell, I do not have the 64 bit version, but if I get requests and you give me several days, I can look for and update it for those cards. Please check first that your other hardware is 64 bit compatable The drivers are available RADEON__Microsoft_Corporation_-_XDDM , but must be installed from Device Manager using these instructions or it won't install.

Once you have the file downloaded and extracted you must follow these instruction or Win7 will not install the drivers as the generic drivers it uses by default has a newer date. Install by going to device manager -> right click on your display adapter -> select "update driver software" -> select "browse my computer for driver software -> select "let me pick from a list...." -> select "have disk" -> select "browse" -> browse to the folder where your device drivers are located and select atiixpag.inf, and install that driver

I ran my newer card on those drivers and it ran fine, your experience may vary though depending on your hardware. Do not expect too much, but it should be better than the generic driver offered by Win7

    Option 2
These are Windows XP drivers for the same cards, they are newer than the Windows Vista drivers and may work better; These drivers are available 32Bit_XP or can be downloaded from http://catalog.update.microsoft.com/v7/site/home.aspx and then extracted and installed.

    You need to follow these directions to install these drivers;
Install by going to device manager -> right click on your display adapter -> select "update driver software" -> select "browse my computer for driver software -> select "let me pick from a list...." -> select "have disk" -> select "browse" -> browse to the folder where your device drivers are located and start at the top, keep selecting inf files until one supports your device, and install that driver.

The drivers may work better than the generic ones or may not, let us know. you may get better desktop resolutions, etc, but you will not get Aero desktop features such as transparent windows from these drivers. There are also Omega drivers available on the internet at http://www.omegadrivers.net/ let us know if and how well they work for you

    why does it say XDDM?

Windows Xp Display Driver Model, but it is extracted from Vista, The alternative would be Cat 6.11 from ATI, I would recommend installing only the drivers though, not Catalyst Control Center or anything, No sense taxing an older system more than necessary, at least in my opinion...I like the Vista driver, simple 5 dll and one sys file, simple works well.  There is a narrow range of devices that were dropped from ATI support about the time of Vista's release because they don't support the WDDM driver model. Let me know if you try both and if you get a better windows experience index or something in particular works better in one or the other and we can post that info here..

    Hi Shakey,
I went to the site you said in my thread http://social.technet.microsoft.com/Forums/en-US/w7itprohardware/thread/e7be9a68-2c69-40cc-95c3-3c9eb5793f81/
I went to the microsoft update catalog and found the correct driver for my computer. However, I can not figure out how to download it. Does it need to be purchased (this would annoy me) or am I just not seeing something? I have added it to my basket but I do not know what to do from there, can you help me? Thank you!

nevermind, I just saw the Download button. *facepalms*

I go into the folder it made and it has a new folder starting with x86 (i have the 32 bit version) and inside that folder are a lot of different things but i dont see anything like setup or anything like that, do i need to do something else? Thank you very much for your help!

Once you have the file downloaded and extracted you must follow these instruction or Win7 will not install the drivers as the generic drivers it uses by default has a newer date. I know is is a bit time consuming, but as I said any other way and Windows thinks that it's generic driver is better because it is newer. ATI went and made a number of inf files instead of one or two as they usually do. If you leave that "show only compatable devices" checkbox checked then as soon as a device shows up, it will be compatable, select it then install. If by chance nothing shows up with any of them then go in device manager, get your "Hardware ID", post it here for me and I will have a look into it as soon as I can (hopefully right away, you've been waiting long enough)
PS, I believe this has been corrected in newer releases of Win7!

    "ATI MOBILITY FireGL V5250" = ati2mtag_M56GL, PCI\VEN_1002&DEV_71D4

I know what XDDM stands for. And, by the way could you get drivers for the IGP 340M (The driver you gave is for IGP 340)

Well then, it says that because whoever wrote the driver wanted the end user to be aware of this perhaps?
I checked the inf file for the driver, it does support it but for some reason the line is remarked out, all you have to do is open atiixpag.inf, find the line near the top, at the end of the list of supported devices

    ;"RADEON IGP 340M (Microsoft Corporation - XDDM)" = ati2mtag_RS200M, PCI\VEN_1002&DEV_4337

and delete the semi-colon at the front of the line (do not leave a space, just backspace over it or use your delete key)
PS - in the same line you can delete the XDDM reference if you wish then save the file rewriting over the old

Thanks. I already saw that INF thing, but I didn't know what to do.
I also changed the name to ATI Radeon IGP 340M.
    (  "ATI Radeon IGP 340M (Microsoft Corporation)" = ati2mtag_RS200M,PCI\VEN_1002&DEV_4337 )
I notice that the semicolon (;) is a character that tells it to ignore what is said.

Thanks. Do you know how to edit a .sys file? I'm thinking of changing the type to WDDM, but that may be dangerous.
Unless you can find WDDM files quicker than me, i will be searching.
The driver enables much better performance than the Standard VGA Graphics Adapter file. I also know where to get more memory for the IGP 340M - Radeon IGP 340M Compatible Modules

Sorry there has never been wddm drivers written for that series, ATI claims (I am definitely not that technical) that these were designed before the specs were written for WDDM and are not compatable. That is why they haven't written the drivers. The 340m is a motherboard chipset with onboard video capabilities, yes you can increase the system ram and the video does share the system ram and it will run better with more ram I suggest checking your motherboard manual for the maximum size module and going with that (It probably has slots for 2 modules) If you can borrow some to try, my dell laptop claimed to support up to 2Gb ram (2x 1GB) modules but actually installed up to 4Gb (2x 2GB), but only supports 3.25. I suspect you may be able to run at least 3 as well
PS, If you ever do run into a WDDM driver for that series, it would also support the Radeon 7500 - 9250 chips as well, please let me know, I would be very interested as I do have a Radeon 9000
PPS, be sure you get a compatable SoDimm though, I belive your link said DDR266, and if I recall, DDR333 is backward compatable with 266...my Dell laptop was actually compatable with and ran memory at speeds faster than it claimed in the manual, I run DDR2-800 at 800 Mhz when the manufacturer claimed it only supported DDR2-533

When you were talking about memory, did you mean for the card? At the bottom of the inf file there is a thing like

    [ati2mtag_RS200M.GeneralConfigData]
    MaximumDeviceMemoryConfiguration=128
    MaximumNumberOfDevices=4

is maximumdevicememoryconfiguration the maximum you were talking about. that may mean 1gb because that needs two slots. and on the site there are 512mb modules

where in vista did you extract from
  • Sunday, May 31, 2009 4:41 PMshakeyplace Users MedalsUsers MedalsUsers MedalsUsers MedalsUsers Medals

You just install vista, then get any, well almost any driver backup software, install the driver and then use the software to back it up, the inf files are stored in C:\Windows\inf, I believe it is a hidden folder so you would have to enable the show hidden folders option in windows explorer.
That section at the end of the inf file is for the maximum shared memory, it is also sometimes described as turbo memory. This adapter does not have it's own seperate memory or discrete memory, so to expand the memory and make it more responsive you must upgrade or expand on the main system memory it shares with the operating system (or you would slow windows down at the expense of speeding up graphics... may be counter productive).. You may be able to expand the memory that the adapter uses by increasing that number in the inf to say 192 or 256, It may be worthwile if it doesn't cause the driver to crash. feel free to experiment. At worst you may have to do a "system restore"
As I said in my last post. It may be different for you, but in my case my manufacturer said the maximum was 1 Gb modules and 533 Mhz, the actual maximum was 2 Gb per module and 800 Mhz memory. I suspect that yours probably supports at least 1Gb modules and may support 333 Mhz speed for the DDR SoDimm modules as well. At worst I believe that 333 Mhz modules are compatable to run at 266 Mhz anyways. Perhaps the vendor stated that as a maximum because the modules made at that time consumed more power or when the chip was designed the maximum amount available on a module was 512 Mb and the page was never updated? I would definetely try it out if it were me because I find that more and/or faster memory really helps with older systems

Thanks for putting this together. Very helpful. While the default Standard VGA driver works for my Mobility Radeon 7500, the screen resolution is not up to par with the WinXP driver. Unfortunately, the WinXP driver that came with my laptop has compatibility issues and does not allow Hibernation or Sleep, but everything else seems to work and the screen fonts look so much better. Looking forward to trying these tips to find a better driver. Thanks again for putting this thread together!

    SilverlightKnight,
Hi, it appears from Sony's support page that your IGP device is a IGP345M, I have added support for it in the XDDM driver, It should work if you install using my instructions. The device will NOT  support the Aero therefore you will not get the aero glass effect or the sneak peak effects but I see no reason why Windows 7 would not run fine with the device. Here is the upload I have edited to support your display adapter
RADEON XDDM Driver Including Mobile I will update the link in my second post shortly, use this for now, please remember to read and follow my instructions

I guess I should explain that when you install Windows 7, it will use a generic display driver that will seem very unresponsive, I really recommend you install this driver, it should make the display and cursor much more responsive. I have often heard reports that the XP drivers for these devices may cause blue screen errors on shut down, when playing videos or when WEI is rating the graphics capabilities, this is not always the case but does seem to happen from reports. I have not heard this complaint yet about this version of the driver so that is why I recommend it. You of course are welcome to try the XP drivers provided by your manufacturer and they may well work. I haven't heard anyone suggest that one or the other works better other than the blue screen errors many seem to get with regular XP drivers. The ones I provided do not provide any more functionality than drivers would from any other source except they work much better with windows 7 in (I believe) every case I have heard so far (with the devices it is intended for of course) and at the same time appear to be capable of basic video playback and basic games. it does not change the fact that your card is a DX7 capable card and does not in any way provide additional capabilities beyond the errors experienced by some. I have heard of others including in this thread that the driver works better than the generic driver

Shakeyplace, thanks for the quick response and advise!!

I'll see if I can get this all working and provide feed back.  I have not used this laptop in a while and want to get a little more use out of it before getting a better machine.  If this combination does not work I'll just wipe it and rebuild it with the original backup disks.

    Thanks again!! VK.

PS, when you install, it will show up as a "RADEON IGP 340M (Microsoft Corporation - XDDM)", not a IGP 345, don't worry, it is the same controller and hardware id so that won't make any difference. The setttings and files are identical.

Thanks for your work shakeyplace. Just installed 7 RC on my fiance's Inspiron 8500 (which has a Mobility 9000) and was looking for something other than the VGA driver that RC put in.

Am curious- are you saying that it's possible to go past the 2Gb system ram Dell says is the max for this system? It currently has 2Gb in it (just upgraded from 512mb, also put in a faster hard drive). Seems to run 7 fine for what she uses laptop for (web, email, IM's).

most likely, the biggest limitation is the two slots to put the ram in, you see in most cases the manufacturer bases the maximum possible ram on the largest available (at the time) on the available slots and what the largest available size stick of ram. If larger sizes of ram come available then you likely can increase that more. what I am saying is if you can find say two 2Gbb sticks of ram, the laptop will likely support it. I have a Dell 6400 and I believe Dell also advertized it as having a max 2Gb and I use 4Gb, 3.25 available the rest being "system reserve)

Installing 32bit Win7 on express 200 chipset, and while it installs, there is no display adaptor wording listed in device manager.
Of course, this prevents me from updating driver.
It is running, but windows updates do not correct display issue.

    Motherboard used is Asus A8R-MX/SI.
Similar was used in Asus Vintage AH-1

There is an exclamation in device manager for PCI standard PCI-to-PCI bridge, which is what I believe is what Win7 sees as the video card. If I install another video card, then this error goes away, and device manager looks fine.

Have tried many Bios options, (now at 128 meg video UMA), and clean installs, yet nothing listed in device manager for display adaptor.

I copied some info from both the Win7 install on the new hard drive, as well as the working install from WinXP (swapped HD for install).

Thanks in advance for any tips you can provide.

    An update to above post.

Still same issues of no display adaptor in device manager, and instead PCI standard PCI-to-PCI bridge error, even in safe mode.

Another clue might be what happens with add on video cards.
I can install an ATi X800 PCIe card, and it works fine. Nothing special is needed to run.

However, when I attempted to install an ATi HD 2400 Pro, it would hang on the Starting Windows screen, with no 4 colored things appearing on that screen.

Same thing with nvidia 7600gt and ATi HD 4830.

Safe mode would work for all, and correctly showed the add on display adaptors, with no PCI standard PCI-to-PCI bridge error in device manager.

Finally able to get HD 4830 addon card working fine by running MSConfig and selecting No GUI Boot.

Onboard xpress200 still not right when running without add on card.
Hopefully the No GUI Boot will help solve the primary issue.

    Thanks

Thanks, I've just installed the ATI Radeon 7000 driver for Vista in Windows 7, and it works well.  I'm experiencing a few issues though... It doesn't play videos as smoothly as possible at 1280x1024 32-bit.  I say that the driver works 95%.

I'll be experimenting with OmegaDrivers after this...

    Thank you, @shakeyplace!

I have a Dell Inspiron 9300 and I am looking for a new driver for the ATI Radeon Mobility X300. I ran the Windows 7 software to make sure everything would work and it says my video card is compatible, but I am still receiving the ati2vag.dll bluescreen. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Next I will put up something for pre Radeon 9500 cards, most of these have been tested, if you have troubles let me know and I will do my best

Does not work I have been trying this for 2 hours over and over and it does not work  any other suggestions can't I change the date on the driver?

ATI apparently is not supporting the 8500 in Windows 7 and your only choice is to purchase a newer card for which you can obtain drivers.

For further information contact ATI Tech Support.
