windows 7 64bit - sound stopped working after successful OS and driver install
- I installed windows 7 home premium today on my computer on a dedicated hard disk. All went fine and did windows updates to all my driver issues. At this point I had sound. I then installed ubuntu 9.10 on a separate physical disk without issue. Ubuntu installed a boot loader (Grub) which recognised windows 7 and I could boot into both OSes (dual boot), both working happily (including sound). I then installed some apps in ubuntu (incl. wine) and now when I boot into windows 7, I don't have any sound. The sound icon is happy, the device manager is happy. I haven't touched the windows disk or installation, yet the sound doesn't work. The sound hardware is a Sound Blaster Audigy PCI card.
This doesn't make sense surely. Any ideas?- Moved byRonnie VernonMVP, ModeratorTuesday, November 03, 2009 8:05 AMFocus (From:Windows 7 Installation, Setup, and Deployment)

- Hi,Sounds like a similar issue except Windows 7 recognises the card for me and installs a driver via Windows Update, and I do get sound for a while. Anyway, looks like you are right about the compatibilty:http://www.microsoft.com/windows/compatibility/windows-7/en-us/Details.aspx?type=Hardware&p=Creative%20Sound%20Blaster%20Audigy%20SE%20Sound%20Card&v=Creative&uid=70SB057000000&pf=0&pi=6&s=creative%20audigy&os=64-bitI didn't even consider this as I tested Windows 7 Ultimate eval for a few weeks on the same hardware without any problems. I only got issues when I dual booted, which doesn't make sense. I've decided to get another sound card - one that is compatible with Windows 7 -http://www.microsoft.com/windows/compatibility/windows-7/en-us/Details.aspx?type=Hardware&p=Creative%20PCI%20Express%20Sound%20Blaster%20X-Fi%20Xtreme%20Audio%20Sound%20Card&v=Creative&uid=SB1040&pf=2&pi=1&s=creative%20sound%20blaster&os=64-bitThanks a lot Microsoft! :(

Hi,
I would like to confirm the following questions first:
1. Is there an exclamation mark or question mark in Device Manager?
2. Can you hear sound when booting in Ubuntu?
At stage, it is highly recommended to replace the speaker by a headphone to check this issue. If there is still no sound, please go to Device Manager, right click your hardware device in the list and select Update Driver Software; then click Search automatically for updated driver software.
Note: Drivers on the Windows Update site are directly provided by hardware manufacturers. Microsoft tests drivers in various environments before they are published; however, we cannot guarantee all drivers will work on all hardware platforms as there are too many different models, although their hardware ID are the same as the standard version. In some cases, due to hardware modifications by different manufacturers, the driver updates may cause some error.
If it still does not work on your issue, I'd suggest you installing the Vista driver in Compatibility mode. Remove and rescan that hardware device in Device Manager, right-click on the driver executable/installer file -> Properties and select the Compatibility tab; click the checkbox before Run this program in Compatibility mode for option and select Windows Vista in the list-down box; then try installing the device driver via Run as administrator. In addition, you can use the Windows XP driver for testing.
Thanks,
Novak
- Hi Novak,
Thanks for your quick response to my original grumpy message - I spent all of yeserday trying to get it to work and was pretty tired and annoyed when I posted my message.
To answer your questions, there is no exclamation mark in Device Manager. Windows thinks it is happy with the device and driver that is installed. Secondly, sound works fine in Ubuntu. As I mentioned in my post above, both operating systems had working sound until I installed some apps in Ubuntu. I can only think that when I installed wine and spotify in Ubuntu, it has *done* something to the sound card which has affected it when using Windows. I have changed my wine settings back to use (audio) full hardware accelaration rather than emulation. That said, making a change in one OS on a separate physical disk shouldn't affect another OS on a different physical disk.
I had already tried using headphones but again, there is no sound from any of the four input jacks on the card. I have plugged the speakers back in to the green jack i.e. the one that should be used for sound output.
Following your instructions, I have gone into Device Manager and right clicked on the soundcard and done a Update Driver Software (search automatically for updated driver). Windows then just says "The best driver software for your device is already installed. Windows has determined the driver software for your device is up to date." Then there is the icon and "SB Audigy".
I haven't gone down the route of installing the vista driver or XP driver yet, as I know that the Windows 7 driver does work, it has just stopped producing any sound for some reason.
Yesterday, I went through the whole install again of Windows 7, then Ubuntu 9.10 presuming it was something I had done wrong. The same thing happened. Sound was working fine in Windows 7 until some event in Ubuntu caused it to stop working. I've done cold boots to make sure there wasn't any strange instructions left on the sound card from Ubuntu. Unfortunately the motherboard I have doesn't have onboard sound so I can't try an alternative.
This is all very strange!
- I am encountering an identical issue, so if I find a solution I will post it here. Likewise, please update if you find a solution to this problem so I can try it.
- Please verify the "Windows Audio" service and assure the service is started. Meanwhile, please also run Troubleshooting program in Control Panel to troubleshoot the issue. If the issue still persists, please do a clean installation again and create a System Restore point when the sound device is working. Then, please keep using Windows 7 for a long time for a test. Does the issue reoccur without using other operating system?
Thanks,

- Hi, I am useing the same sound card, but have a different problem, I have two Sata hard drives in my tower, one runs Vista 32bit and the sound works fine, the other has Windows 7, and I am getting the message (no audio output device is installed), so vista can find the pci sound card on my motherboard and 7 cannot!! I have loaded the driver for windows 7 from Creative but to no avail, now that is strange.
I have just found out that these cards are not compatible with windows7 ( thanks for nothing microsoft.)Look at this>>http://www.microsoft.com/windows/compatibility/windows-7/en-us/Search.aspx?type=Hardware&s=creative%20audigy- Proposed As Answer bymalce Wednesday, November 04, 2009 4:06 PM

- Hi h0ffmeister, if you can find a 7.1 sound card that works with 7 please advise, I have tried to no avail.
regartds
malcolm - had the exact same problem lost sound in windows 7 after installing ubuntu 9.10
To fix I booted into windows and uninstalled the sound driver through device manager then rebooted. Windows then installed sound blaster update utility which found the appropriate driver and my sound returned. While i did this i disconnected the hard drive that had ubuntu on then once i had sound back working I reconnected it and now all works fine.
Hope this fix works for others- Proposed As Answer bykillbot32 Friday, November 06, 2009 11:54 AM
- The issue IS in Ubuntu(9.10), resources of sound card after restart from Ubuntu is not properly released, there is a problem with sound card kernel module... So when you boot Windows the sound card cannot be founded.
Workaround is SHUTDOWN Ubuntu and power up and your machine should be in a clean state. I use XP thoough I had exactly the same issue, I would say that the issue wouldn't matter what other OS you booted into from Ubuntu as Ubuntu 9.10 is causing the problem. Hopefully there will be a fix soon (open source and all that ;)- Proposed As Answer bykarmickoala Saturday, November 07, 2009 11:32 AM
