Monday, March 12, 2012 6:32 PMHi... I'm a newbie tech who just got his A+ certification but have been tinkering with computers for some time... My problem is I found a computer on the street with Windows 7 Ultimate on that has no sound... Device Manager tells me the sounds drivers are missing or corrupt... can I download these drivers unto a USB thumb drive and them install them? Do I get them from Microsoft or from the computer manufacturer's support site? I have no Internet access at home so I want to see if I can download them to a thumb drive. I found a Windows 7 install disk in the optical disk player... aren't the drivers on there already? Can I reinstall?

The manufacturer website of the system or the motherboard is the primary source of all hardware drivers and utility software.
Microsoft neither writes nor publishes the drivers and utility software for any third party hardware.
There are some generic drivers included in the installation media, but they usually only provide minimal functionality until you install the manufacturer's drivers.
You can reinstall Windows 7 but you will still need to go to the manufacturer's website to download drivers that are not shipped with Windows 7.
If you find the appropriate Windows 7 drivers on the manufacturer's website you can download them to a USB drive for installation.

Yes, you can download these drives onto a USB thumb drive and then install them.
Please understand that drivers are directly provided by hardware manufacturers. You should download these drivers from the computer manufacturer website.
