    Hi thawk-todd,

    Please also try System Restore to restore the system to the date before the issue first occurred.

    Also, did you try the "Fix it" in the link provided by Nikhil's? If not, please try it as well. Also, you can manually edit the registry key by the steps below:

    Modify the Registry

    ============

    1. Click the Start Button, type regedit in the "Start Search" text box and then press ENTER.

    2. Navigate to the following key:

    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Class\{4D36E965-E325-11CE-BFC1-08002BE10318}

    3. Right click the {4D36E965-E325-11CE-BFC1-08002BE10318} entry, choose "Export", select Desktop in the Save in box and type backup in File Name. Click Save.

    Please Note: The backup file is on the Desktop and named backup.reg. We can simply restore the registry by double-clicking the backup.reg file.

    4. Highlight this key ({4D36E965-E325-11CE-BFC1-08002BE10318}), on the right pane, and then check if Upperfilters and Lowerfilters value are present. If so, please right click on the values and select "Delete" to remove them.

    5. Restart the computer

    In addition, could you please provide the exact link of the Skydrive where you uploaded the information to?

    Regards,

    Linda

    Hi thawk-todd,

    If the issue persists after trying the suggestions provided by Nikhil, please also try the suggestions below:

    If you have installed any CD/DVD-burning software, please temporarily remove them from "Control Panel"-> "Programs and Features".

    If the issue still exists, please move on:

    Remove the DVD-ROM drive

    ==================

    1. Click the Start Button, type devmgmt.msc in the “Start Search” box and press Enter.

    2. Expand "DVD/CD-ROM drives".

    3. Right click the DVD-ROM drive, and click "Uninstall".

    Then, please restart the computer. Does the DVD-ROM work properly now?

    If the issue still cannot be resolved, please provide the System Information for further research:

    1. Press Start, type in msinfo32 in the Start Search bar and then press Enter.

    2. Choose Save from the File menu and save it as an NFO file.

    3. Find the file, right-click on this file, click "Send To", and click "Compressed (zipped) Folder".

    4. Upload the compressed file to SkyDrive at www.skydrive.live.com

    Regards,

    Linda

    Thanks for the input but no luck.  Troubleshoot common computer problems found no problems...so I went to Linda's suggestions.

    We did not remove any software, however, the problem appeared after we installed itunes.

    Uninstalled the drive and restarted but then windows gave error on restart that it could not find device driver.  Tried to troubleshoot from Action Center but it failed trying to install the driver.

    Uploaded the msinfo32 info to Public folder in Skydrive.

    what should I try next?

    Linda, your the best.  I deleted the upperfilters entry and the drive now works.

    I did try the "fix it" but no luck.  Above is the link to the msinfo32 zip.

    iTunes now gives the message:  Warning - The registry setting used by iTunes drivers for importing and burning CDs are missing.  Please reinstall iTunes. I just canceled the dialog box.  I'm afraid that if I select OK it will wipe out the drive again.

    Thanks for your help.
