I have a C4580 wireless printer, with Win 7 RC (or a previous beta) the printer install seems to start working.  When we search for available wireless printer it finds two versions of the the printer.  If I select the first finding (port 3910) the driver install fails (no other message then  that, but most things seem to be correct).  If I choose the second (tagged as HP Photosmart C4500 series); driver installs, you can probe the printer (notifies that ink cartridge is low, etc.).  When you try to print the information goes into the vapor.  Note if I pause the print queue, I can see it in the queue.  If I unpause the queue the print just goes into vapor.  I have looked at the firewall, etc (I am a home network and do not have a workgroup); no obvious issues there.  Note If I look at the printers reciever packet count, it does not seem to change when I issue the print.

    Hi,

You may check your install with this step-by-step from HP website for your printer

Thanks for the pointer.  I got the printer to install as "local" not wireless (started off as wireless install). Interesting.  I think I will try to convert to wireless the next step.  (Unforturnately I am traveling this weekend so it is a next week activity.)  Thanks again for the pointer.

To get the printer working in Windows 7 RC:

    1) Download The PS_AIO_04_C4500_USW_Basic_Win_en_120_210_NB.exe from HP Website
    2) Right Click on installer, select Compatibility, and select Run this program in compatibility mode for "Windows Vista".  Click OK
    3) Start the Installer
    4) When the installer gets past the extraction and to the intro screen, navigate to c:\users\<profile>\AppData\Local\Temp
    5) Copy the temporary folder the installer creates (mine was 7zS7185, but in may be different) to the Desktop
    6) Cancel out of the Installer
    7) Goto Start --> Devices and Printers
    8) Right Click and select Add a printer
    9) Select Add a network, wireless or Bluetooth printer
    10) Ignore the printers that show at the top and select The printer that I want isn't listed
    11) Select Add a printer using a TCP/IP address or hostname
    12) Select TCP/IP Device, enter the IP of the printer, and click Next
    13) When the Install the driver screen comes up, select Have Disk
    14) Browse to the folder you saved on the desktop and double click on hpC4500a.inf, and click OK
    15) Select HP Photosmart C4500 series, and click Next
    16) Enter a printer name
    17) Share if desired
    18) Print a test page if desired
    18) Click Finish

This should give basic printing capabilities.  This assumes that the printers wireless settings are already configured.  I used another XP machine to configure the printers wireless settings first.
