when I scan an image from twain, it works right to the end, but it doesn't show the actual image. just before completion I get something like 'access violation', or: 'you need a WIA driver for this device.' when I open and try to use Paint it doesn't even RECOGNIZE the scanner!

I looked up 'WIA driver', but that seems to be hopelessly outdated by now. Canon even seems never to have heard about Windows 7, RC or Beta or whatever...

Have you tried the latest Vista driver installed in compatibility mode?

Go to the following website. Support - CanoScan D660U - Canon USA Consumer Products and download the following driver to the Desktop.

D660U Scanner Driver, Ver. 5.8.2 for Windows Vista 32bit. CanoScan_D660U.exe

Next, look at the following post that explains the step by step instructions for installing the driver in Compatibility Mode.

What you are finding is typical for most major hardware vendors. Although they are currently developing drivers for Windows 7, they will not 'officially' support the new operating system until the final version is released.

thanks for your trouble, and I did everything you suggested, but somehow I can't get the old twain driver UNinstalled ('you need permission' or something, although I tried to change that to Admin). even if it looks as if I uninstalled it, the scanner light remains on.

besides, the driver date is somewhere in 2002, and 1 thing I know for sure: Vista was nowhere in sight at that time! so that's why I think it is still the old twain driver that refuses to have itself uninstalled. or it is reinstalled by windows 7 every time at startup???

I give up... thanks again, but I'll keep w-xp just to be able to use the scanner from time to time.

If this device is critical for you, there is another solution that does not involve any expense, as long as you have a qualifying system.

The Windows Virtual PC is a new freely available program that is designed for Windows 7.

This comes with a specially configured VHD (Virtual Hard Drive) called XP Mode, Which is a specially configured, fully licensed version of Windows XP.

When configured properly you can install a program/hardware device, with drivers designed to run on Windows XP and it will place a shortcut to the program directly on the Windows 7 Start Menu. When you select that shortcut, the program/device will run, seamlessly, just as if it was installed directly in Windows 7, but it will actually be running in the XP Mode.

thanks again, ronnie, but as you can see my PC doesn't support virtualisation... I thought that a Pentium 4 could do the job?
