    Hi.

I want to make a system backup of windows 7, the disk is a 500 GB with the following partitions:

    C:\100 GB Windows 7

    D:\ Windows Server 2008 R2

    E:\ File storage

I made a restore copy of C: and tried to use it with another hard drive on the same laptop, this is of 320 GB.

I get always an error when I try to restore the backup on the new hard drive.

Do I need to have a new HDD with the same capacity?

I hope anyone can help me.

    Thanks!!!!!!!

Using the internal tools, you cannot restore an image to a drive that is/was smaller than the original. What I have done in the past is manipulate the partition size using the Shrink and Extend commands.

You could, of course ,use a third-party product, there are plenty of free programs available.

I don’t know a great deal about this cloning program, but I’ve been told that it has a good reputation for reliability. It’s called Macrium Reflect, here http://www.macrium.com/reflectfree.aspx
