Proposed AnswerWindows 7 upgrade installation failed

I have an HP pavilion laptop computer running Vista Home 64 bit. I bought the 3 license Windows 7 and tried to install it. First I spent from 6AM till 11AM backing up my computer. Then I spent the next several hours checking with HP to figure out how to find the right drivers that the upgrade suggested I needed.  Then I spent from 3:00 PM - 8:00 PM installing windows 7.  At 8:00 PM the computer indicated that the upgrade failed.  It is now 8:28 and it is still restoring my computer to whatever it was before.  I had to un-install several things and would like to know what I have to do to fix this mess. I am not happy with this at all --- $149 later and over 14 hours.  Please help.  Do I have to re-install windows 7 and will it take another 5 or 6 hours.

What was the failure, an error message or did it hang. Please be more specific on the failure mode.

I wish I knew.... after that many hours I got tired of watching it go thru the 6% and sit there for 45 min and then watch another hour for it to go at 18 percent compiling, and then thru the next 5 steps.  When I came back to it, after the last step at 42% on the last part of the upgrade, which lasted over 30 min,  it was just rebooting and then I got the message saying that it had failed.  I don't know if I should have stared at that screen for 5 hours or what, but I apparently missed the error message or whatever.  Thats why I would like to know if I have to spend 5 hours again tomorrow doing the exact same thing.  I don't know what to do, and am very frustrated with both time and expense.

After an hour of the restoring to my earlier Vista the following note appears
This version of Windows could not be installed.
Your previous version of Windows has been retored and you can continue to use it. Before trying to install this version of Windows again, check online to see if it is compatible with your computer. Go to the Microsoft website (www.microsft.com) and search for "upgrade advisor".

Before I tried to upgrade this computer I went to advisor. I printed out the instructions and did what it said to do to un-install a few things that it indicated I could re-install later.  I downloaded several of the upgrades to other applications that this "advisor" told me I would need. I then called HP and did an online chat with them to find out about what drivers I would need to install once the upgrade was complete (per the advisors info).  I turned off my Kapersky and started the upgrade using the 64bit disk. I don't know what else to do.

    Thanks for your help

by the way, those things that I un-installed are not on the restored version of Vista. What do I need to do to re-install them, or should I even bother, if I am going to try to re-install windows 7.  I don't know what these un-installed features do.  I think they are part of the video program for my laptop.

Its possible those things you uninstalled were drivers. If you are now able to boot to Vista check 'Device Manager' to see if any drivers are missing.

Also its a good bet you will need to download and install the Vista driver for your Video card as well. You should be able to get the drivers that you need for your model number from HP'ds web site.

    LKB850,
When an upgrade fails and a rollback is initiated there are logs created. Find them and post to your SkyDrive, a public folder and provide the link here in a post. We can then determine the problem.

In Windows Explorer or search find these:
    C:\$Windows.~BT\Sources\Rollback\setupact.err
    C:\$Windows.~BT\Sources\panther\setupact.log

Then we can get to the bottom of this. Also, with Vista Home Basic or premium you can not upgrade to Windows 7 Professional.

I am trying to go from Vista home premium 64 to windows 7 home premium, 64.  I don't know what SkyDrive is.  What kind of information would I be putting on it? would all my computer files be available for anyone to see?  I have located the files you are referring to.

I talked to an HP chat tech this morning and he told me to upgrade my bios, so I did that, and then tried to re-install windows 7. I started the re-install at 9:05AM and at 12:06 I got "upgrade not successful"

at 12:04P there was a "set up will continue after restarting your computer" message and there was a restart; the new logo came up and then a blue screen that indicated there was a problem -- perhaps it said klimb.sys or something ... there was too much info for me to read before the screen quit.

when i first started this re-installation it said that I might have problem with a keyboard file, but it isn't in the paperwork that I printed when I ran the scan to see if my computer was compatable with windows7.

    Thanks

If you have the ability to roll back to Vista, don't this time around.

In an attempt to isolate the problem, perform a clean install of Windows 7 and see if the problem still occurs.

    LKB850,
The log files only display upgrade/installation activity. No personal information. The SkyDrive is a free feature of Windows Live. A place to store and share files. You get it when you sign up for a hotmail or live email.

So, don't worry about that for now.

I would uninstall Kaspersky. It is known to cause installation issues. You can reinstall the latest version and activate with your product after the successful upgrade. If you don't have the product code available, select the uninstallation method that leaves the licensing information. The new version automatically finds it.

If you have a basic usb or ps/2 keyboard to use during the upgrade process, use that. Disconnect all peripherals except the keyboard, mouse and monitor.

If that doesn't work, we'll need to review the log files. Can you copy those to removable storage for reference on the first failure? That would be helpful.

    MsLKB,
Did you run the Windows 7 upgrade advisor? Get it here.

klimb.sys could be related to a program that is incompatible or is potential malware. Check C:\Program Files\Klimb and the Contol Panel uninstall a program for something related.

The log files only display upgrade/installation activity. No personal information. The SkyDrive is a free feature of Windows Live. A place to store and share files. You get it when you sign up for a hotmail or live email. There is a public area where you can upload files and share them. Don't worry about that for now, just check it out.

I tried to upgrade Vista Ultimate 64 to Win 7 64. Got most of the way done, then rolled back. I didn't see anything.
Passed the compatibility check both before and after attempt.

    RickHan,
I don't undertsand how it could have passed the Windows 7 Upgrade Advisor. The hardware yes. What software issues were mentioned? The setup error log has so many errors I don't know where to begin.

AVG 8 is definitely a problem. remove that and install the new version after the upgrade.
The Ultimate Extras are not in Win 7. Uninstalling them before the upgrade makes it a smoother process.
Same for Windows Mail. Export your mail files in .pst and .csv formats to import to a new email client.
The Asus Probe is a 32-bit app in your 64-bit system. Update that to 64-bit before attempting the upgrade.
A new bluetooth driver will be needed.

    Further issues that need review:
Retail upgrade on a sysprepped disk?
Upgrade on an encrypted disk?- You may be running out of disk space for the upgrade. Clear the encryption before the upgrade. Then reset after completion.
    IIS services?
    MSMQ?
    Hyper-V services?
    Visual Studio?
    Domain user profiles?
    Mapped drives?
Windows Media Player issues. Is that updated? Any bad links, libraries, playlists?

Yes, the phone may have added to the list of issues. All peripherals should be disconnected.

I ran the compatibility program and it told me what i needed to remove which included ATI Catalyst Install Manager, and I have tried to remove it several times, but it does not un-install. The catalyst install manager just says there are no programs to uninstall. The compatibility program also said to remove a couple of HP programs which I have done. There are some to upgrade, cisco programs, but I want to see if they work, before paying for something I don't use in this computer.

After I told it to install again, it said to stop the installation and remove ATI Catalyst Install Manager, and Music Match Juke Box.  I didn't have music match juke box, so i looked it up online and see that it is something to do with yahoo.  So I removed Yahoo totally from the list of programs.  I have totally turned off Kapersky, even though the list indicates that it is compatible with Windows 7.  Is there some way to know how to un-install the ATI Catalyst manager.  After that, I will try it again.

I have spent the past two days trying to remove all the files that I want to keep (pictures and documents etc), but don't know if I have the nerve to do a "custom install" since I don't know where I would get some of the programs that I use, that are a part of HP apparently, or I have downloaded them and don't have the necessary info to re-install.

I don't know how I will receive an alert when someone answers this, since my e-address is on yahoo.

    Thanks for your help.

Hmm, AVG was uninstalled, I use MSE.
    No encrypted stuff.
    Plenty of disk space.
Definitely domain user profiles, as this computer is in a domain.
    Definitely Visual Studio 2008.
ASUS might eventually have a 64bit version of Probe, in a few years, maybe..

I figured upgrade prb wouldn't work, but it was worth a try.
Clean install went perfectly. In a week or so, I'll have everything reinstalled, configured and patched...

    Hey RickHan,
The anti-virus programs need to be checked with the vendor's uninstaller tool, even after uninstalling from programs. Orphans. That may have been the big issue. I have not had any experience with anyone here on the forum upgrading with the software that you have, so I was curious to see if it would work.

Most of the user profiles had to be recreated anyway for domain computers.

That configuration will take a week. Whew!

Perhaps the WAIK could have migrated everything properly.

    Best Regards.

After trying to upgrade to windows 7 for the fourth time, I have seen that message again... it is something about a klim6.sys file and then says something about a driver.

If I do a clean install won't I lose my Kaspersky license?  We bought the program for 3 licenses (since my husband used it also) and we have a desktop computer that has it.

I have done the following: I had turbonote, and I completely uninstalled it (altho I left the notes, so hopefully it will be there when I re-install it, if I'm able to find the license for it)
I uninstalled a couple of programs, that I can't even recall what they were now... something that came installed on my HP laptop (and this thing runs slowwww now when I get reverted back to Vista)
I turned off instant messanger using msconfig, in addition to HP health check.
I unplugged my logitec mouse wireless usb thingie and used the pad on the notebook.
I turned off the settings on Kaspersky.
I completely removed the program files for MusicMatch Jukebox [from the c:program files x86]
I completely removed the program files for ATI Catalyst install manager [from the c:program files] after trying to remove it with Windows Installer CleanUp Utility [suggested in HP chat session]
I updated MSN toolbar (altho I don't use it)
I updated another program that was suggested.
I can't figure out what to do with Cisco Peap Module (they suggest update it, but I don't know how)
The other suggested updates are for Power Director, lable Print, and CyberLnk DVD suite.  Since I don't use that, I don't see why I would want to invest nearly $200 in updating that... could it be causing this failure?

The list of compatible programs indicated that Kaspersky was compatible.

I googled klim6 and don't understand the results of that search.  Perhaps you can make more sense out of it.  This is the second night in 4 days that I haven't had more than an hour of sleep trying to figure this thing out. Life is too short, if you know what i mean....

    Thanks for your help.

    MsLKB,
This sounds like you are ready for the upgrade.
If you still have your activation code for Kaspersky, it will activate the new KAV or KIS 2010. You should have received it on the disc or by email for an online purchase. If you cannot locate it, open a support ticket with Kaspersky and they will provide the activation code. Locate it and then uninstall Kaspersky with their uninstaller tool here. The tool will clean out everything. Kaspersky is known to cause issues on upgrades as are other AV products. You can then go to the Kaspersky site and download and install the latest version after the upgrade.
Then your upgrade should go well. It will take ~2hrs if all goes well.

Oh, about the Cisco PEAP, that is built in with the network adapter drivers that HP supplies. No need to worry about that unless you connecting to a business domain at work.

Thank you for your help, Nano Warp.  I finally got Windows7 upgrade onto my computer. But what a pain its been. The upgrade took 3.5 hours and then another 2 hours just to get my Kaspersky back on. Thanks for the info about Cisco Peap.
And I still have some programs to re-install that were required to be removed.  (ATI catalyst install manager, and whatever else I had to remove.  I hope all of that will go more smoothly than Kaspersky! )

Now I have another problem and hope you might have an answer.  I use Microsoft Outlook for my e-mail program and I now get the message : "not implemented". It is part of Microsoft 2007 standard.  I saw that Outlook express wouldn't be supported, but I didn't think that meant Outlook itself. Any suggestions? It was working before.

    MsLKB,
    You are welcome.

Kaspersky KAV or KIS 2010,  version .0736 should be installed, yes?

    Internet connection is working?

For Outlook, try Start>Default programs and set it as default email client.
If it is set as default, review your account settings for mail and click ok again.
Check to see that the email security in Kaspersky is activated and spam training uses existing message and Outlook plug-in is checked.
Delete any Microsoft Welcome to Outlook Messages , Outlook Express, Windows Mail in the in box.
    Run Windows Update.

I am not sure what that means. Is there a code following the phrase? ie.0x0000???   Did you receive an install disk or activation key with the computer?

    Hi Nano Warp...

Kaspersky was a bear to get going, but yes, i have version 0736 on there now!  (My disk was for 2009, so it had to upgrade before it would protect the computer)

Apparently the outlook thing needed an update too, since it is working this morning. I'm a happy camper.

But.... now I have another problem.  There were two programs that I had to un-install. ATI Catalyst Install Manager ver 3.0.664.0 and Catalyst Control Center-Branding version 1.00.0000

I have spent all morning in a chat session with HP and they keep trying to get the device driver for ATI radeon graphics whatever-that-thing-is.  My computer indicates that the driver is up-to-date.

But those two programs are not there and I don't know where to find them to install them.  The Chat tech sent me to a "hot-fix" site but I couldn't find any mention of either of those two programs. Do you know where I need to go to find them.  And do you know what they are for???

    Thanks

    MsLKB,
You could have just download the most recent version of KAV\KIS from Kaspersky and entered your activation code from your disk envelope.

Anyway, if you visit ATI.com, you'll find the Downloads for the Catalyst Control Center. I hesitate offering this suggestion as the ATI seems such a pain to get configured.
They offer components and the driver ccc package. Furthermore, ATI may not support your display adapter. Mfg only.

What model is your computer? complete model number. I'll look into it.

    MsLKB,
It appears that HP provides the drivers and control center in one package. It's 109.77mb. Driver page here for your computer.

But, the gamer page of ATI provides the components. Try the Catalyst Control Center Download here. You want the 47.7mb file

If it messes things up, uninstall it and download the entire package from HP. Then install that.

The Catalyst Control Center lets you change advanced options.
    Have fun.
