AnswerWIN & beta keeps freezing on Install?

  • Monday, February 02, 2009 8:25 AMHusskii Users MedalsUsers MedalsUsers MedalsUsers MedalsUsers Medals

Hi I am using the following PC

    MB: FOXCONN P9657AA
    BIOS VERSION: Not Sure
    CPU: Intel(R) Core(TM)2 CPU
    6420 @ 2.13GHz
    2.13GHz, 1.00GB of RAM
Memory: Not Sure (DDR2 240Pins) (Maybe; KINGSTON)
VGA: NVIDIA GeForce 8500GT NX85T256H PCI Express X16
    PSU: Not Sure
    HDD: 1 MAXTOR IDE HDD 250GB/ 4xPartition C\@ 79GB - D\@ 79GB - E\@39.5GB & F\@35.5GB
    CD/DVD: LITE-ON DVDRW LH-20A1P SCSI CdROM Device
    OS: C\-Win XP PRO +SP3
    Multimedia: WinFast DTV

When I try to install WIN 7beta on E\ drive but every time I try it will freeze just after copying files on the install page.... It will Copy files but then on the Expanding files it will just freeze.... sometimes at 0% sometimes at 9%

When I try installing the same OS on VPC-2007 I have no issues, so the disk must be fine and it has something to do with my desktop. That aside I have tried other OS and they will install fine... I’m really having trouble with installing the OS on the above desktop, and I can’t figure this out...

    Can anyone help...

    Thanks...

Your attempt to use a SCSI CDROM to install a Windows 7 DVD may be problematic,
because once you restart into the expanding files operation, the SCSI drivers are no longer loaded.

    If possible, I would suggest using an IDE DVD-ROM drive to perform the Windows 7 installation;
alternatively, you'll need to load the appropriate SCSI Host Adapter drivers with the <F6> boot option.

How long does it freeze for, as i noticed i have 2 'freezes' during the installation setup, one at the first blue screen, it will sit for close to 5 minutes, and then before it starts copying files it will freeze for up to 10 minutes, then it isnt a smooth progression through extracting files, some parts go quickly others appear to freeze again.

also when you partitioned it did you use the win7 disk to partition and format where you are planning to install to, as apparently it doesnt always like other things partitioning and formatting for it.

dam that was quick and thank you...
With the freezing yeah I get the freeze at the first blue screen too, the first time I tried it froze for over 1hr, but then I restarted setup and it went straight thru with a little freeze 5mins thats all.... but then 2nd try it froze on copying files and then again I restarted setup and it went straight thru... then I thought great must be just a bug in Win7beta, but when it got to expanding files it froze again as usual, so I left it for over an hr just to see if it will break thru but no luck.... so I restarted and hoped it will do the same as first to sections, and run thru but about 10 tries later I'm still getting the same freeze and it just wont pass....
with the partition I had used ubunta8 to partition bacause a had 2partitions to start with when I was just running WinXp PRO both at approx 117GB each, and wanted to keep origional OS, but just shrink it a little... so used Ubunta to create the 4partitions, all are NTFS and primary partitions.... So u think I should try reformat that partition with Win7....
    thanks

might be worth removing the partitons entirely and redoing the last 2 partitions and the format, also do you have another dvd drive lying about you can try just in case its having problems reading the disk

I actually stuck a second drive in and installed to that, 80GB to start with, but im that impressed i bought a 1TB drive and Windows 7 is now residing on that, so  can work through all my games to see which work and which dont lol.

@uknigel, is it a full freeze, or does it do something else like go to a black screen? which version of Win 7 you using 32 or 64? what is it a branded pc/laptop? if so make and model would be helpful, otherwise if its a custom build build specs would be of use.

I am attempting the recreation of the partitions and hope it works.... also I have another DVD drive wich I can use, but I hope it wont lead to that as its difficult enough just to pull my PC out of where it is setup, but if first option doesnt work then I will try that too, but I don't think its the DVD drive as I have tried other OS straight after win7 didnt work, and the other winOS's worked smooth ...
thanks for the info will post when Im done....

the reason i suggested othe drive, was that other os'es were on other discs, it might be worth trying to burn another copy, just in case its a problem with the disc.

How long have you left it for? ok guess i should have asked more precisely ;) which brand of motherboard and model number and which Specific Video card, also how are you connected to your monitor, via VGA cable or DVI or HDMI? Is the system overclosked or is it all at standard factory settings? How long have you left it for on the final screen?

I think my PC took about 40-50 minutes in total to install each time.

hmmm im running an MSI P-35 NEO with a Nvidia 8600GT 256MB Silent edition,, so the basic motherboard design is the same. its not crashing out due to DVI, or HDMI, have you tried using advanced boot options on the final boot, and selecting standard vga driver (640x480, just to see if that will let you finish the install?

no prob will try install new DVD and also recopy a new image....
at the moment I tried to repartition the two hard drives and reinstalled, and it still froze same place... but I forgot to format....
so now following same steps but formatting too.... But honestly I dont think its the DVD coz it worked on my laptop that runs Vista... I have VPC on it and installed straight on to it... no probs at all.... so im thinking maybe partition and format, but if it wont work, then I will try other steps...

Encountered this once but not with 7. The error came from a dvd written too fast. It seemed OK, Nero checked and all that, but there were errors which forced the install to slow down (near to halt) to find its bits. The second copy of the dvd was burned at 2x and did what it was supposed to do. INSTALL.

I have heard that the install can be done via a usb stick, if the pc will accept that as a boot device, as far as i understand it, copy the files and directory structure over and reboot with the memory stick in, apparently its also faster than installing off disk, but i havent yet tried this myself.

My experience (for what it's worth) is to avoid upgrading. I know reinstalling all your favourite software is a bit of a pain, but in the end it pays off. Less legacy problems, less conflicts.

if you have the space partition and try a stand alone fresh install, if that goes through ok then the disk should be fine, if that also has problems then again i would think about trying to redo the disk see if that helps. Or possibly try the memory stick approach. only other thing i can think of would be to remove all standalone cards (apart from video card) during installation then if that gets you into windows 7 add them in one at a time in case its one of those having problems with drivers.

mmm yes maybe driver problem as that what the final part of installations is drivers think might wait till it comes out next year if it is getting driver problems

Thats the reason its public beta now, Microsoft need the machines that have problems more than the ones that it runs fine on, because if everyone installed it now with no problems and an entire set of problems were hiding, when it went to release, it would be a complete fail. finding and reporting issues like this now, and working out what and why, helps make win 7 even better.

Yes there are driver problems currently, but there are newer ones being worked on and released, i wouldnt give up now, if you like Vista you should love 7.

thats so true and probably one f the best decisions they've made, in OS. But its such a pain, i thought by now they would have figured these things out... (The Install part) that is...

Stick with it, trust me its worth it, also MS have stated that the public beta has shipped with a smaller amount of drivers than would be included in i believe the RC version and definately the RTM version.

That's what I've done. Having a XP Pro x86 operationnal, I burned (at the slowest speed possible) the downloaded iso of windows 7  x64 in order to install it from dvd to a different partition. No hickups or whatsoever. Windows booted to a dual boot screen. It renamed the partitions however. My "H" partition I installed 7 to became "C", and I couldn't see my original "C" partition anymore. Opened Disk Management and attributed a name to my old "C" to see it in the explorer. No further issues.

if you start it in windows xp you only have the option to do a full or custom install, thats a point is it the default or the custom install you are trying? Only other options i can think of the top of my head, are new disk, different drive, bare bones install, remove all cards and usb devices, all non essential connections and internal cards, then try the install, do you have a seconf drive you could try installing to?, last option i can think of just now would be try copying all files to usb stick and try installing from there. Another question, what type of cable are you using between Vid card and monitor, as there have been problems reported when using other than dvi. I would be really tempted to try removing the WinFast multimedia card, because thats the thing that jumps out at me from you original post as being most likely to cause issues.

I do have a DVD drive which I’m using and I think I might have added my pc details wrong, as I do not have a CD drive... I’m not sure... anyways at the moment I am trying again and still the max I get to is 3% on Expanding files... the pc doesn’t restart after copying files so not exactly sure what u mean there... but I should also add that after trying continually to install Win7 with no luck.. I backed up all my files, then I reinstalled win xp pro x86 but with no drivers and hoped that would make a difference as I thought maybe it was a driver conflict issue... I want to attempt what u said about loading dif drivers in boot options but not sure what u mean, I only have just completed my certifications but still have had no hands on experience since then other then my own use at home, so pls if u could the more info the better...
    thanks again for your help

It matters not whether I call it a CD, the caption calls it a CD, or whatever. We all know it's a DVD device, because the installation media image requires a DVD.

The point is that to use a SCSI device as an installation device, either the optical drive (CD/DVD) or the installation drive (HardDisk), requires the SCSI drivers. Some SCSI drivers are natively included in the installation image, as they have been since Windows NT, but rarely are the drivers needed part of that collection.

Thus, S.O.P. when installing from/to a SCSI device is to have the SCSI device drivers available on floppy disk prior to beginning the installation.

USB stick should work just as well, also i believe you can probably get away with putting the driver files on another partition on the hard-drive(although i dont think it would work if you use the XP partition)
