-
Friday, December 28, 2012 10:43 AMSo I just bought a new hard drive and installed my windows 7 professional on it but i cant activate my key. It says that it is a upgrade key and that I cant use the key to activate windows. Everything I have is genuine, from dvd to key. I bought it straight from microsoft.

Was the DVD an Upgrade DVD? If so that is why you are getting the message.

The DVD will have the word "Upgrade" on it if it is an upgrade disc, as well as on the outer box.
When do you get the message about the key? Do you get it in the initial installation when it ask for a product key?

There was an issue with that and a workaround as well, though I'm not 100% sure if it still works. So you now have full blown Windows 7 installed, just not activated. Place the disc back into your computer and this time select UPGRADE for the installation method and it will go through the process and your key should work now that it sees it as an upgraded installation. Give that a shot and post back results.Be kind and Mark as Answer if I helped.

Hi,
Glad to hear this issue has been solved after performing the in-place upgrade. More reference: How to Perform an In-Place Upgrade on Windows Vista, Windows 7, Windows Server 2008 & Windows Server 2008 R2
