I've tried about 8 times to upgrade from Vista Ultimate 64 to Windows 7 64. The process dies after Windows Files are copied, Gathering Settings and the expand Windows files starts.

The error message simply states the process fails and it restarts.

Any ideas would be greatly appriciated!

Did you install SQL server? If so, I suggest you backup data, remove SQL Server and then try to upgrade. However, if SQL server is not installed, I suspect that there are some third party programs that added SQL related components into Registry. May be you need to uninstall some programs that is related to database.

    Arthur,

Thank you for your suggestion and help.

I uninstalled SQL Server and many other applications, I believe the upgrade went further down the path but did not complete.

The following appears to be the critical area of the setupact.log

Arthur -- thank you for your help. There was a post on that link which solved the problem and I am guessing would solve all of the problems I experienced.

My computer had 4 - 2gb ram chips. One of the suggestions on the link you provided was to remove 3 of the 4 RAM chips. I thought this was a silly idea but I tried it anyway.

Turns out, the post was accurate, the upgrade from Windows Vista Ultimate 64 bit to Windows 7 Ultimate 64 bit worked when I ram with 1 - 2gb chip.

    Thankfully that task is over.

    Thanks again for your help.
