General DiscussionINSTALLATION FAILS WITH HDMI MONITOR CONNECTION

    Setup:  Gigabyte GA-73PVM-S2H mobo w/NVIDIA  7100/630i chipset

                    Intel E2200 CPU

Seagate 320GB 7200rpm laptop SATA II HD on eSATA

Seagate 160GB 7200rpm laptop SATA II HD (internal)

                    2 GB 800 MHz RAM

HP w2207h monitor on HDMI port

Sharp LL-171A-B monitor on VGA port

                    External USB DVD

    On-board video drives both monitors.

After an eight hour download I attempted to install Win 7, only to spend eight hours troubleshooting the installation process.  No matter what I tried the installation always failed about one minute after the ‘Completing Installation’ phase started.  There was no hint of what was causing the problem – the monitor screens suddenly went black and the system  rebooted.  Installation finally succeeded after I disconnected the HP monitor from the mobo’s HDMI port.  I tried another install with only the HP monitor connected and the install failed once again.

After the installation successfully completed using only the VGA monitor, hot-plugging the HP monitor to the HDMI port brought the HP to life and Windows automatically set the correct resolution.

This issue is apparently unique to Win 7 because I have not experienced installation issues with XP regardless of monitor configuration.

Once the monitor issue was identified, total time to accomplish a clean install was < 15 minutes on the above system and slightly longer my older AMD – based backup machine.  I encountered no other issues with clean installs on the internal HDs or on the external eSATA - connected HD on either system.   IMO, MS has done an excellent job in redesigning the installation procedure.  The entire process is about as hands-off as it can get and it’s fast, too.  Nice job, guys!

Cool. Same board, same problem. Tried with a HDMI TV attached, and with a DVI Monitor attached. I guess, I need to find a VGA Cable... I'll try again this evening. (Yes, Microsoft, you are welcome!)

2Pi - was that an old style CRT or just any monitor with VGA (d-sub) connector?

The VGA monitor is an LCD. It and its twin always performed without issues with XP Pro.

OMG! It worked! Unplugged HDMI and DVI. Used an old VGA Cable for my TFT and it all worked. Windows installs the nVidia driver right after you log in the first time. After that HDMI and DVI work. Cool.

Yes. Happens with an Abit mobo too - in a machine I built as a media centre. I hope this is fixed in the final release; it's daft if there's an install problem to a media centre pc where the only display is an HDMI TV.

I had the same problem with a HDMI monitor.  I found that I had to first use a VGA monitor, and then extend to the HDMI.  When I removed the VGA monitor, the HDMI continues to function as the primary monitor.
