Some machines require reactivation of Windows
-
Thursday, February 16, 2012 8:47 AM
Hello
We maintain a school network with approximately 400 computers. 2/3 are installed with Windows 7 Enterprise for which we have an educational MS-KISS license (all computers are being activated with the same MAK-key).
What happens: every now and then a computer claims it has a non-legitime windows and needs to be activated again. We then just push the Activate Now button and Windows reactivates immediately and works properly again.
I wonder why machines suddenly need a reactivation? No hardware changes where made to those machines.
Yesterday two computers needed reactivation and they showed a slightly different message: your activation period has been expired.
I hope somebody can give me some explanation or tell me how I can prevent the reactivations.
Thanks a lot.
:)

Hi,
The error message “Your activation period has been expired” usually can be caused by:
1 You did not activate Windows 7 within the 30-day activation period.
2 Windows 7 detects that the hardware on your computer has changed significantly and that you did not reactivate Windows 7 within the 3-day grace period for re-activation.
3 You are running a version of Windows 7 that was detected as non-genuine.
You can refer these articles:
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/925616
http://windows.microsoft.com/en-US/windows-vista/Troubleshoot-activation-problems
I suspect that some of your machine failed to active by your MAK key. There are usage limits on MAKs:
Are there usage limits on MAKs?
http://www.microsoft.com/licensing/existing-customers/product-activation-faq.aspx
Hope that helps.

To properly analyse and solve problems with Activation and Validation, we need to see a full copy of the report produced by the MGADiag tool (download and save to desktop - http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/?linkid=52012 )Once saved, run the tool.Click on the Continue button, which will produce the report. To copy the report to your response, click on the Copy button in the tool (ignore any error messages at this point), and then paste (using either r-click/Paste, or Ctrl+V ) into your response.- **in your own thread**, pleasePlease also state the Version and Edition of Windows quoted on your COA sticker (if you have one) on the case of your machine, but do NOT quote the Key on the sticker!http://www.microsoft.com/howtotell/content.aspx?pg=coa

There appears to be no problem with this machine, although an attempt to validate on 14th Feb failed due to what is probably a connection problem, that has not affected the current licensing status. Is this machine one that is currently requesting re-activation? Is it still showing as non-genuine after running the report? (the tool does have some repair capability, so it can fix some things as it runs)If it wasn’t one of the affected machines, please find one that is currently affected, and run the tool on that.

The 3-day activation window would tend to imply that Windows thinks that the hardware has changed, for some reason. The accompanying 0x80072EE2 error would tend to imply that this hardware change is possibly the NIC.Perhaps you should check the recent installation history on this machine, for driver updates for networks adapters. See if you have anything in Windows Updates that’s repeat-installing, or if there’s anything related in the Event Viewer.Do you have any software that maybe affecting the OS’s view of the physical NIC – (perhaps virtual NIC’s of some kind? – are the affected machines perhaps VM hosts?)
