I'm a tad uneasy after reading some posts on making a clean install. I have ordered the Home Premium 7 upgrade, presently I have OEM (Legal) 64 bit Vista Ultimate and this requires a clean install. Vista is installed with RAID 1. Do I leave Vista on the discs to show that an upgrade is okay? Will 7 then format my RAID 1 discs? I had planned to format the discs before hand but now it appears that I can't do that, or can I, if Windows 7 asks for the Vista disc for proof for an upgrade?

Yes.  The qualifying product must be installed on the machine before you use the upgrade pack/key.

"Will 7 then format my RAID 1 discs?"

    No.

You can choose 'Custom' as the install preference, and then at the partition selection screen choose the partition where Vista is currently located.  The partition will not be formatted.  The partition contents will not be deleted.  Instead, the existing installation will have its boot entries removed and then get bundled into a WINDOWS.OLD folder.  You can recover data from the old install by using Explorer.  You can remove that folder later at your leisure by choosing the 'Previous windows version' option in Disk cleanup.

The procedure does NOT compromise the performance, reliability or integrity of the new, clean install.  Obviously you need adequate free space on the partition before you begin, so ensure that you've prepared for it.

" if Windows 7 asks for the Vista disc for proof for an upgrade?"

    No.

The installer will not allow you to use the previous install disk to verify.  Windows XP was the last Windows version which allowed that to occur.

win7 does not ask for the Vista disc, it looks for the Vista install to be installed and activated on the comp in order to start either the upgrade or clean install (custom option).

Never have dealt with RAID so you are on your own there...
