Answered Windows 7 KMS activation problems

Running in a windows 7 environment with 2008 R2 servers. Whenever I try to activate a client's office 2010 and windows 7 from volume activation I keep getting the following error message:

    'Status of last action: 0xC004F074

The Software Licensing Service reported that the computer could not be activated. No Key Management Service (KMS) could be contacted. Please see the Application Event Log for additional information.'

I have checked out our DNS records and all seems to be in order with the _VLMCS record on port 1688 - although it has a really old timestamp on it where as other records such as _Kerberos have much more up to date timestamps but I'm assuming this shouldn't matter?

I have run a port query on 1688 and I am getting a 'NOT LISTENING' response. I have checked the firewall rules on both the host and client and both have the KMS entries allowed.

In the event viewer on the host, there seems to be no events in the 'Key Management Service' log and on the client I am getting 12288 events from 'Security-SPP' and 'Office Software Protection Platform Service' stating that the client has sent a request to be activated. I am also getting an 8196 event from 'Security-SPP' with the following message:

License Activation Scheduler (sppuinotify.dll) was not able to automatically activate.  Error code:

    0xC004F074

I have also restarted the server and the 'Software Licensing' service.

It feels like the KMS needs to be kicked back into life. If any one could suggest anything, I would be most grateful!

    Hi,

Please check the detail information about the 12288 events from 'Security-SPP'. Also make sure DNS is right, check Configuring DNS.

In addition, here is a blog for your reference: Office 2010 Activation errors - 0xC004F074 "...No Key Management Service (KMS) could be contacted" and 0xc004f050 "The Software Licensing service reported that the product key is invalid"

More information about the activation error:

    Hope this helps.

if you aren't seeing any events in the KMS event log, that suggests that the KMShost isn't a KMShost.

check the current status of this server by using the slmgr.vbs script.

open an elevated (admin) CMD console
    cd \windows\system32
    cscript slmgr.vbs /dli all

post the results for us to guide you

quite easy: reinstall KMS and activate it, (KMS-)clients will reactivate using the new KMS server.

But please first check if there are enterprise firewalls running independently from client / server firewals that block the communication:

go to the KMS server machine and telnet to KMS port on localhost to see if a successful connect is possible (which would indicate a working KMS server).
