Answered How can I update Windows installation files?

When I integrated all post-sp1 updates to boot.wim image, I noticed that Windows installation files in the sources folder were also updated to the latest version (6.1.7601.18015) - not the one found in original SP1 media (which IS 6.1.7601.17514).

For example, the above picture shows the dism updated to that version.

How can this be done for Windows installation files - like the upghost.exe - which are not part of WinPE?

When creating deployments with MDT I noticed that my DISM.exe version in the Boot files is even newer.
It is the version 6.2.9200.16384, I think this is the version from Windows 8 already.

Can not find upghost in the boot image or a deployed system though, seems this is no default application within Windows.

Thanks for the links. But those links are about installing Windows updates in general. How can I keep Windows 7 installation files up-to-date?

That's interesting: dism 6.2.9200.16384 is from Windows 8. Is it really in a WinPE 3.1 boot image?

It seems that Windows Migration files -including upghost.exe, the Migration Host Program- (required for upgrade installations) cannot be updated in WinPE.

Probably the latest version of these files is the SP1 one - 6.1.7601.17514. However, I'm not sure about it yet.

Sorry for the mistake, I am using WinPE 4.0 on this machine.
Using WinPE 3.1 in productive environment, but can't have a look at the versions right now.

Really wondering why I have no upghost on this machine, maybe I can find them in the PE 3.1 images on monday.
    Where is is located exactly?

Is upgrading to WinPE 4.0 an option for you?
I would not worry about the versions too much as long as there are no issues. (like were with AF HDDs).

WinPE 4.0 is based on Windows 8 kernel. I wouldn't use it to install Windows 7 SP1, because driver integration might be problematic - as you pointed.

But I believe, after all, that all installation files can be updated to the latest gdr build. I had read somewhere that were even some MSDN tools about remastering windows installation media - not sure about it, as I'm not an MSDN subscriber myself.

If you find out anything, please post it here.

I have concluded that Migration/upgrade files of the latest version are the ones included in the latest SP install media. If one tries to update those files in WinPE (by using the optional WinPE-LegacySetup 6.1.7601.17514 package found in WAIK supplement), he/she will realise that these files will not be updated.

    Thanks for your answers.
