AnswerI installed Winows 7 Ultimate on my PC and on my Laptop and now getting errors on my laptop

I already had Windows Vista on my PC and Windows XP on my Laptop and bought Windows 7 Ultimate from my Students software supplier, assuming that I could install the software on the two computers. I installed the software on my Laptop first and it seemed to install OK and then later I installed it on my main PC but two weeks later I am getting a message on my Laptop saying that 'there is a problem with my Windows 7 Ultimate activation, please put the Product key in or buy another copy of the software' ? I tried putting the software key in but to no avail and when I tried writing to Microsoft using my main PC, Microsoft's automated system could not recognise the product key I was putting in. Maybe the Students Edition of Windows 7 does not qualify for help from Microsoft, or something.

To say I am frustrated it to put it lighly, I had a valid version of Windows XP provided with my laptop and I bought a legal version of Windows Vista for my main PC but as an impecunious student I just cannot afford to spend too much on software and now it looks as though I will have to go back to Windows XP on my Laptop because I'm sure that Microsoft will not let me transfer my legal copy of Windows Vista to my laptop.  It is quite confusing to have two such different operating systems between my laptop, used at University and my home PC, which has a printer and various other goodies attached plus it is time consuming to install the new software or to uninstall it plus it is getting very expensive.

Please tell me that I can use Windows 7 on my two PC's, laptop and PC or that I can transfer my copy of Windows Vista to my laptop.

Incidentally, my copy of Windows 7 was very late arriving and the Students software company who supplied it said that this was because many hundreds of copies of the software, including one with my name on it had been stolen and they had to cancel all of the old product keys and it took them more than 2 weeks to do this and send out new ones.

I am afraid to tell you that you cannot use one product key on your two computers. Under the Windows 7 End-User License Agreement (EULA), you may install one licensed copy of Windows 7 on one computer. Please understand that the licensing specifies that each machine requires its own license for Windows 7. To install Windows 7 on a second computer, you will need to buy another Windows 7 copy or purchase a license.

However, you will be able to install Windows Vista to the laptop by using your copy of Windows Vista with the product key. If you still want to run Windows 7 on your laptop, you can consider buying a new copy of Windows 7 from your Students Software Supplier. As far as I know, Window 7 for College Students is only $29.99 .

    Hi Dan,

According to the annoucements, yes, you can order a Windows 7 Student Version from USA. Please see,

"...UK can pre-order their copy beginning on September 30th (pre-ordered copies will be available for download beginning October 22nd).... "

In addition, it is not suggested getting a bootleg copy of Windows Vista for your laptop in order to ensure the stability and security of the computer. If you do not have Windows Vista installation disc or the product key, installing Windows XP is also a good idea at the moment.

    Good Luck!
    Judy :)

Thanks Judy, just wish I had not bothered with Windows 7 now. The Student version in the UK costs about £60 or about 100 US dollars and you can only purchase one copy at that price, to have a second copy I would need to pay the normal commercial price which is way out of my reach.  Just wondering if I could buy the student's version from the USA ?

I am tempted to get a bootleg copy of Windows Vista for my Laptop and since I have already paid for it for my main PC maybe that will ease my guilt pangs but I have heard so many horror stories about people who have gone over to the dark side by using illegal software. Unfortunately I just do not have time to footer about with software when I am supposed to be studying. I will just have to revert my laptop back to Windows XP as soon as I get time.

Thanks for your very fast reply and Best Regards, Dan McLean
