Unanswered Device Manager - IDE ATA/ATAPI controllers

At times, under IDE ATA/ATAPI controllers, there are listed several channels + one Intel SATA/AHCI controller of some sort. At other times, when installing the latest SATA/AHCI controller driver package on top of this listing, all the IDE ATA/ATAPI controller channels disappear, with only the Intel SATA/AHCI controller remaining.

Why is this? There is still only one SATA-disk installed, thus there should still be available ATA channels listed. Or am I wrong?

Could someone give me a walkthrough of IDE ATA/ATAPI listings behaviour related to what mentioned above?

Thank you in advance for any reply!

I've seen this sort of variation before, I'm fairly sure it's to do with the BIOS settings for the storage controller, i.e. RAID vs. AHCI vs. IDE.

When I install by right clicking the ata channel and select the driver manually it only updates that one channel and leaves the rest showing as ata channel 0 etc . If I install using the .exe instead, it shows only that one channel after. No other channels.

The BIOS-setting is always set to AHCI, no matter what result.
