upgrading to windows 7 from windows vista 64 bit is stuck at 85%

Hello, I seemed to have a problem with upgrading from windows vista 64 bit to windows 7. My pc has been upgrading since the last 2 days. So far it is stuck at 85% when it is gathering files, settings and programmes. I have left my pc over night and still no progress the following morning. What do you think I should do?
I am not doing a full clean install, but only upgrading it.
I have checked with the compatibility advisor and it stated that it is suitable for windows 7, however, its been 2 days and no progress.

Hi,

I have a windows 2003 domain environment and have roaming profile implemented. I have installed a windows 7 and tried to login with account with roaming profile enabled but the profile is not been applied. When I check the profile folder, it creates the user folder with .v2. Is there any windows 7 template for group policy for this to work or any known workaround?

Windows 7 Backup - System image includes non system disk

Hi,

I am trying out windows 7 backup, hoping at last that I won't need a 3rd party backup solution. So far so bad!

My first problem is how ridicilously slow the backup is, but this has been discussed at length elsewhere. My second problem is the backup stalls when I try to backup a folder which I know has got various bits of malware in. I am an IT pro and use the files in this folder for testing purposes. OK fair enough I guess, although I think the backup should handle this event a bit more elegantly. So I've zipped and password protected the offending files to hide them from the AV (security essentials by the way)

The final problem which I just can't understand is that when I try to create an image of my system drive, backup wants to add my D drive (which is purely a data drive) to the image. My D drive is huge and I don't want to include it in a system image. I keep my system drive lean and mean for exactly this purpose but now I can't back it up because the total size of C and D drives combined exceed the capacity of my backup drive.

I know for a fact that the D drive has no consequence to the system boooting or operating, I have disconnected it and windows boots up just fine. In computer management the D Drive is not showing up as a system drive, so why does windows think it is? And why isn't there a power user mode wher I can choose exactly what I want in a system image, I understand you're trying to make windows easy to use for the average Joe, but this lack of functionality and in depth control feels more like a Mac than windows.... and I hate macs.

So can anyone shed any light as to why my D drive is being flagged as a system disk, otherwise it's back to 3rd party solutions... AGAIN

Windows 7 doesnt get load after installing it

Greets.
Everytime i try to install windows 7 in my other computer after the "completing instalation" part, the screen goes black.
if i reset the computer the starting windows screen appears for like 10 secs, then black screen again.
I've tested the windows cd in the sandbox in my other pc, nothing wrong with it.
My pc is a medion one and it had windows vista HE installed.

PS.The problem is only with w7, every version of vista works.

After performing Win 7 upgrade from retail DvD on HP DV5t-1000 laptop, I get past login screen and then screen goes background blue with just mouse pointer. Stays there forever.
Error message box - explorer.exe entry point not found - The procedure entry point DWMHINTDXUPDATE could not be fund in the dynamic link library user32.dll.
I can get task manager up but can't figure out how to get past this. Any insight appreciated.

Win7 is installed twice. I want to remove the one on the FIRST disk.

What a nightmare!
Short info and question first. Details at end..

My system ended up with Win7 installed on two drives. One is brand new (and never started) and one is "recovered".
The new one is on the "first" disk. (disk 0)
The "Recovered" one is on the Second disk. (disk 1)

I want to keep the "recovered" one and remove/erase/format the new one.

Now the details:
This system started as
Win XP Pro (disk 0)
Win 7 (disk 1)
Dual boot

I finished up with the XP Pro and decided to format it. Windows would not let me do it because it was a system disk so I STUPIDLY downloaded a program which allowed me to format the drive.
This, of course, removed the files needed to boot my system and I could not boot into Win 7.
I tried repair and all sorts of other things... Finally I decided to bite the bullet and just reinstall.
When reinstalling it asked me where to install so I decided to install on disk 0 since that is the more appropriate place to do it.
When Win 7 was done installing and I rebooted I discovered that it then repaired my original install of Win 7 so I was in a dual boot situation that I described above.

I want to keep the recovered one but have no idea how to go about doing this without trashing my install again.
I have downloaded the program EasyBCD since it seems to be a recommended program. It appears to be Vista specific so I am unsure how to procede.
Obviously just poking around and "trying" things is NOT the way to go. :D

I've seen lots of different so-called "answers" to this problem. Some seem inappropriate, such as to edit the Boot.ini file and I am just unsure what to do.

Windows 7 Professional using a Windows 2003 print server to map printers

I am testing Win 7 in our network, I can install a network printer (HP Laserjet 3700 64bit driver) directly to the computer via TCP/IP. If I install the same driver on the 2003 R2 server (by adding the driver under sharing and additional drivers) it will not work, I get an Operation Failed with error 0x00000bcb.

Win 7 will be useless if I cannot connect it to the network for printing using a print server.

i recently install windows 7 64 bits version on my HP desktop s3620f. And get blue screen of death.

The computer has rebooted from a bugcheck.
The bugcheck was: 0x0000009f

This machine worked fine under Vista. I have been reinstall windows 7 for several times and try to update driver to latest vetrsion with no luck.

Somebody from HP ask me to install this hotfix http://support.microsoft.com/kb/976972 , and now i am getting frequently "Explorer Not Responding" error while I right click on desktop. If you leave the machine along for a while, it will recover from this error finally.

Can anybody give me some advice?

Replace bad motherboard?

I need to replace the motherboard of my Windows 7 installed desktop with the EXACT SAME motherboard. A couple RAM slots of my old motherboard are not working and since it's still under warranty, I'm having the motherboard replaced.

The old and the new hardware are identical so I figure there should be fewer issues if I were to replace the mother board with a totally different one.
Is there any special procedure I need to do when swapping the old with the new identical motherboard so I don't have to reformat and/or reinstall the OS?

I recently upgraded os to windows 7. My dvd drive is not getting recognised. It says drivers are corrupted. Code 39. But I can put a bootable cd and boot the system through it.

I tried downloading drivers for this dvd-writer, but I cannot install it. The target drive does not appear at all.

I tried uninstalling this device in device manager and then recognising it again. No luck.

What should I do to solve this problem?

Windows 7 Upgrade Hangs at Collecting Information

Windows 7 Advisor gives the thumbs up for upgrade From Vista to Win 7.

Installation does not progress after Compatibility Report (blank, by the way) shows. Compability Report stays open. "Close" box for Compatibility Report window or Red X are the only interaction available. "Collecting information" is displayed on the bottom progress bar, and I have let sit for over 2 hours. The computer is not freezing, still have mouse movement and control. If I click on the Red X of the blank Compatibility Report window or the Close button, then the installation is cancelled.
I would rather not do a "CLEAN INSTALL" as an answer to this problem.

Computer is an Acer Aspire w/2 GB. AMD Athlon X2 Processor.

The backup application could not start due to an internal error.
The specified service does not exist as an installed service. (0x80070424)
(1) There is a "Windows Backup" in Services.msc.
(2) "wbengine" folders are missing from the Control Set folders in Hkey_local_machine

Simultaneous version and edition upgrade problem

1. I have a computer with Vista Ultimate to upgrade to Windows Seven.

2. First I purchased a Seven Premium Upgrade Box, but found in-place upgrade to lower edition of higher version impossible - the computer first automatically upgraded to Seven Ultimate, and only then asked for the license serial number - which was naturally rejected.

3. Then, I purchased a license to upgrade to Seven Ultimate - but, as far as I already had had a license to upgrade to Seven Premium, I purchased Anytime Upgrade license from Premium to Ultimate rather than a license to upgrade to Seven Ultimate from Vista. Unfortunately, this serial number did not work to activate the upgraded system as well - complaining that I've made a clean install instead of upgrade.

4. As a result, I have an inactivated upgraded system and two nearly useless licenses... I understand that I can make two-step installation - first a clean install of Seven Premium to a new HDD and then an edition upgrade to Seven Ultimate - but the idea was to make an in-place install... which has been already performed by the way.

Is there any alternative to spending a working day first restoring Vista from a backup, then installing clean Premium along with it, then upgrading it to Ultimate, and finally transferring all the data from Vista to Seven and re-installing all the software? A user-friendly option like a kind of manual activation of existing and working system on the basis of licenses purchased?

Reinstall on Same Computer, But Switching from 32 to 64 Bit Version

I bought the retail upgrade version of Windows 7 for installation over Vista Home Basic on a Lenovo laptop with 4 gigs of installed RAM. Unfortunately, I installed the 32-bit version, believing that surely Windows 7 would USE all of the installed memory. However, when I open the Control Panel and look at the installed memory, I see the message "(2.96 GB usable)". I have since learned that I need the 64 bit version of Windows 7 to utilize all of my laptop's memory. If I reinstall Windows 7 on this laptop and replace the 32-bit version with the 64-bit version, can I use the original Windows 7 activation key code? Thanks.

Problems with making Windows 7 into a bootable disc

I was following the directions to mount windows 7 64bit as a .iso with the ImgBurn program and their directions on the forums because i have vista 32bit. However, when i try to mount the file on the DVD the only file on my computer is only a .iso file. There is no folder with all the sub folders as shown in the directions. What should i do to make a bootable disc to upgrade from vista 32bit to Windows 7 64bit or is there another way i can do this.

USMT 4.0 printer migration XP to Windows 7 failure

I have performed profile migration using USMT 4.0 from an XP machine to another machine running Windows Vista and successfully performed the task. However, when i performed the same onto a Windows 7 machine network printers did not migrate. PFB the config.xml file I have modified as per our requirements. Please suggest a solution ASAP as there is an urgent requirement. Outlook,desktop and favorites were successfully restored with printer migration being the only issue.

How to migrate from Windows 7 RC to W 7 Pro OEM

Keyboard won't work in Windows 7 if I touch the touchpad after being in Ubuntu

Problem: After being in ubuntu and rebooting into windows 7 all is fine in windows until I touch the touchpad.

If I touch the touchpad at all, I am not able to type anything at all in windows.

If I boot in, and just use the usb mouse, that's ok it always works fine, and the typing is fine...until I touch the touchpad!

If I reboot a 2nd time then everything is normal.

This is a fresh install on windows 7 with ubuntu 9.04. Anybody have any clue at all why this is happening??

Installing a shared printer on XP PC to a Windows7 PC

I can see the shared printer that I want to connect to, but when I try the Windows7 PC says " Opperation Failed. Can't created the file that has been already created" I can connect to the HP laser printer that's connect to the XP PC, but not to the UPS label printer that has been shared. Any suggestions out there?

I was using it this morning, listening to Amos Lee. I turned it off to watch some videos on the Internet ( paused the player and minimized to my desktop ). When I clicked on my iTunes desktop icon to listen to more music I was confronted with an empty library and the itunes tutorial page. I have just moved to Windows 7 and used the easy transfer file and my expansion drive to move all of my files from XP. Everything seemed to be working fine and I had even purchased some new tunes from the iTunes store. The easy transfer file is no longer in my expansion drive and I cannot find the missing files in my backup files in my expansion drive. I have checked the iTunes library XML file and it is virtually empty. I have found a few tunes in other files that were transferred from my old computer but my entire library seems to have disappeared. Windows 7 is brand new to me and so far I have been impressed. Any ideas anyone.

Devices and Printers empty - bad device experience

Hi,

I also am having a problem like "Devices and Printers no show." When I installed Windows 7 32-bit on mg 4 Gb Dell D830 laptop, the Devices and Printers screen showed several devices, like the mouse and keyboard. I added 4 network printers and a scanner and they showed as well. A couple of weeks later, the Devices and Printers window became empty. I added another printer from within Notepad, and still nothing showed in Devices and Printers. The printers, my scanner and other devices all work properly. When I plug in a USB memory key, nothing shows up in Devices and Printers.

I checked in my account's dmrcache\en-US directory, and there is one subdirectory in it, with a GUID name. I checked in C:\ProgramData\Microsoft\Windows\DeviceMetadataStore\en-US, and there are two files there, with names like GUID.devicemetadata-ms.

Even though I have no bluetooth devices, I tried stopping and restarting the bluetooth service to fix Devices and Printers as reported on several internet sites, but nothing improved. I don't think I have that problem anyway, because my Devices and Printers starts quickly and does not delay for a long time like it did with the people who had problems with the bluetooth service.

So, do I have a problem with WMIS? Has some device metadata disappeared? Do I have missing registry keys? Did a Windows Update kill my Devices and Printers?

Printer problems

I've just upgraded from Vista to Windows 7, and now my Dell A940 no longer prints. I scrubbed the computer before installing windows 7, so had to reinstall the software. Computer acknowledges the printer, but print jobs don't make it to the printer, even though the print box opens when print is ordered. Do I need some kind of patch due to the upgrade?

So, i was a bit more leniant the first time i tried to do it, basically, it goes like this, I downloaded Win7 RC1 and the upgrade is doing alright except it had been upgrading for 17 hours and 20 mins, it was making very slowly progress with the last item .. switching the message at the bottom constantly between "Please Wait..." and "Transferring files, settings and programmes (395931 of 523838 transferred)" it had been on number that for at least 6 hours and 20 mins that i know of, basically, i restarted the machine and it began reverting back to vista, i've tired everything and it just isn't going to upgrade, tried at least 10 times now and it's just not getting past 62%, I don't understand what it's doing.

I'm really not sure how to continue anymore, what should i do now?

Specs are RAID0 SATA HDD's, 3GHZ Dual core AMD, 8 GBs of RAM, ATI Radeon HD3870 and I'm upgrading from Vista SP1 to 7RC1

Upgrade failure Vista to Windows 7: system crashes at restart during last stage of upgrade

I have tried to upgrade 3 times and same happened: system crashed into blue screen after second restart during the final stage of the install process (installing applications, setting up system) somewhere around 65%. After this the system restarts again and indicates an upgrade failure, sets back Vista.

I have an Acer 3810T notebook with pre-installed Windows Vista Home Premium, two months old. Used official Windows 7 upgrade kit provided by Acer / Mentor Media.

Ran Upgrade Advisor, but it indicated no problem or uncompatibility. Still I have uninstalled most of the programmes between the attempts.

No idea what to do, please, help.

Help Moving the User Profiles and Default Program Data Files Folder Location

I wish to move the Users and Program File Default to away from my SSD C: drive and onto the HDD's D:. I have downloaded and used the Windows 7 AIK and SIM to generate an answer file for just those two folder location customizations, I'll answer everything else manually. Run through a couple of installs and haven't gotten the desired results even thought my answer file validates. File is in a root directory of a flash drive. Install with the bootable install DVD. Questions:
1. Does the answer file have to be by itself on the flash drive?
2. Does the answer file have to have nearly a full unattended setup or can I just manipulate these two settings and conduct the rest of the install manually?
3. If there are no problems with my execution, is this code sufficient/correct for what I wish to do?

Windows 7 Home Premium With Two processors doesn't work

From the Windows 7 Home Premium EULA: "Licensed Computer. You may use the software on up to two processors on the licensed computer at one time.

A Microsoft support rep confirmed this via a support ticket (pasted below), yet all over this forum I find moderators saying that it does not.

Clearly I trust the EULA, and the offical support rep over a forum, but it's still not working.

Any suggestions?

Windows 7 cannot boot

Hi, I'm desperate and I need help.

First, my system:
MB: nForce striker II formula i780
CPU: intel core 2 quad Q9550
GPU: nVidia GeForce GTX 280
main hard disk is a RAID-0 setup.

My problem is, that windows 7 fails, when trying to boot. I get a disk boot error and I'm asked to insert a system disk to boot. the only way to boot is to insert the windows 7 DVD. actually. at the moment, the problem is even weirder. right now, I can't even boot with the windows 7 dvd but only with a vista dvd.

some guy thought, it could have something to do with the S-ATA driver.

but as soon as I try to update/install the nForce driver (doesn't matter which version), I have to do a system recovery, before I can even boot somehow.

I really need help, please. thanks in advance.

Not sure what happened, but I keep getting the error:
Windows could not finish configuring the system. To attempt to resume configuration, restart the computer.

I tried to boot in safe mode and it gave me the same error.

Any thoughts on what to try or is this a lost cause?
I can't remember all the stats of the computer since it is a backup one, but it does surpass all the requirements.

Win 7 RTM does not recognize 2nd physical CPU; "Detect HAL" option missing from MSCONFIG.

I have bought and installed Windows 7 Home Premium (64-bit edition) on a Dell Precision 690 equipped with dual Xeon 5160 processors. It only recognizes one of the two processors (ie, 2 cores).

From Google, I have found that people with similar problems in the past have been able to solve them with "MSCONFIG > BOOT > ADVANCED OPTIONS > DETECT HAL". Apparently this forces Windows to check that it is loading the multi-processor rather than uni-processor ACPI HAL. The "DETECT HAL" option appears to have been available in Win7RC, but removed in Win7RTM. (This thread, for example, refers: http://forums.macrumors.com/showthread.php?t=670125 ).

Can anyone help?

The JUMP feature doesn't seem to work with this Windows 7 Ultimate 64bit. Anyone run into this?

When I try to install W 7 all I get is the sound of the DVD spinning in the drive.

Ronnie, the instructions indicate I need a Windows 7 Upgrade Assistant DVD. I don't have one. I also haven't backed up my personal files.

Hi,
im stuck! i have finally got round to installing microsoft office home and student 2007, and everything has gone very well up untill the activation wizard. according to the wizard im not online, but i am and have no problems with my internet. Im a bit of a technophobe so its scaring me a bit and i really hope someone can just tell me to click a button...

Why microsoft dont release Hijri Shamsi calendare that seen in front of file name and near clock like gregorian and also corrected Farsi(persian) keybord that match Iranian standard keyboard even after 20 years of windows using in windows7 era.
