New Windows Live Movie Maker Outputs 480p at Lower Resolution
- When I output videos on Windows Live Movie Maker in 480p it creates a 480p file but reduces the resolution of the actual video (apparently this is called windowboxing). Since I cannot post photos here, here is a link to a blog entry I wrote on the matter. I will leave feedback directly with the Movie Maker team.

- Yeah, happens with me too. I had source material of 720P, so if I output it, I should get no bars right? I did get bars, eventhough I set output at exactly thesame res. :(
Problems encountered: 1. Xfire does not autostart anymore. 2. Photoviewer bug when clicking,View actual size 3. Can't copy shapes in Paint anymore. 4. IE8 Favorites loading really really slow 5. There's propably somehting else wrong too :) - Ok, make sure you have the aspect ratio set correctly (16:9 or 4:3) That will remove the bars.

- Have you got the beta or the new version? I can make 720p vids fine and I can also make 480p vids, haven't tested with pictures tho.
Edit, I might have found the problem. You are trying to get a 720x480p vid right? Thats aspect ratio 3:2. Windows Movie Maker only supports 4:3 and 16:9. 3:2 is a very uncommon format.

- With 720x480 pictures or video, there is no way to get no bars. 720x480 = 3:2 aspect ratio, Movie Maker only supports 4:3 and 16:9. It can output 3:2 resolution weirdly enough. I have no idea why they didnt choose to support it, but the conclusion is, it is impossible to make any besides 4:3 and 16:9 with movie maker without having bars.

Camcorders with NTSC on them record in 720 by 480. 3:2 is more common than 16:9 from my experience. Yes, I have the new out of beta version.
NTSC is USA only, we(in Europe) don't use such a format. Although Microsoft is a US company, apparantly they didn't feel like supporting it. Perhaps you should try a different program.

If you are using the 720 by 480 file format, you are either getting pillarboxed or letterboxed, since Windows Live Movie Maker does not support 3:2. Check this out. The file formats are 320 by 240 (4:3 aspect ratio), 640 by 480 (4:3 aspect ratio), 720 by 480 (3:2 aspect ratio), 1280 by 720 (16:9 aspect ratio), and 1920 by 1080 (16:9 aspect ratio). If you put a 4:3 aspect ratio video into a different aspect ratio file format, you get pillarboxed. If you put a 16:9 aspect ratio video into a different aspect ratio file format, you get letterboxed. If you are outputting a 720 by 480 video (3:2 aspect ratio) into a 4:3 aspect ratio, instead of it cutting off the extra 80 pixels on both sides, Windows Live Movie Maker letterboxes it first, thus lowering the resolution. Than, if you output that 4:3 aspect ratio into the 720 by 480 file format, it pillarboxes that, so you end up with unnecessary windowboxing. Pillarboxing than letterboxing occurs if you choose the 16:9 aspect ratio for the 720 by 480 file. Either they meant to have an 852 by 480 file format instead of a 720 by 480 file format, or they forgot the 3:2 aspect ratio, because the only use of having a 720 by 480 file format without a 3:2 aspect ratio is if you want to pillarbox a 640 by 480 video.
- Simple: 3:2 vids will always have bars.
