Media Center Problem
- By starting Media Center (live TV or other application) I get the message:
"Video failure
Files needed to display video are not installed or are not working correctly. Restart Windows Media Center or restart the computer".
I tried to carry out a new channel search - the problem isn't resolved. After installation of Windows 7 the WMC worked fine. I have the problem for some days and - it's curious - the problem occures under Vista too. Windows 7 and Vista are installed on different hard drives. How can that work?
Are there any ideas to come over? Thanks.

Check to see if you have the lattest display drivers and capture card drivers installed into the pc.
What video card and tuner card do you use?
- I've just realized that there is a problem with my system. I need a driver regarding the SM-Bus-Controller.
Video card is Nvidia GeForce 8600 GT - a new driver from Windows update just installed, but not yet tested.
Tuner card is Creatix SAA7131, Triple Capture Device.
I found that by disabling the SM-Bus driver this solved a lot of issues with Media Centre
Use the Microsoft Nvidia display driver version 179.23 and check for the latest driver for you capture card (note most Vista drivers will work)

You may need to download the latest intel chipset drivers (the zip package, The .exe wont install because the windows 7 is not recognised.)1. extract the zip file to a folder
2. open hardware manager
3. right click on "SM-Bus-Controller" and select "update driver software..."
4. select "browse my computer for driver software" select the folder where you extracted the intel chipset drivers (32 or 64) and select next.
I had the same problem for my asus p5ql-e motherboard.
Hi, you need at least 64mb of RAM on the video card, which you probably have; and if Win7 don't recognize this you'll receive this error. If you go to Screen Resolution - you can see how much RAM Win 7 see on your card.
If the SM-bus-controller fix doesn't help you out - this might be your problem.

- Hi Martin and all the other guys,
I have tried all the suggestions in between, but the message appears again and again. Are there other ideas ?
Please note: after the first installation the WMC worked! From the same time the WMC didn't work under W 7 it don't work under Vista too. The OS are located at different hard drives. Could there be a problem with updated files?
Thanks in advance.
- Frustrating!!! I have this same error....some days it just works perfectly (about 1 in 10), then after the next reboot, it fails (same error as above). I am using Windows 7 Ultimate x64 on a Dell XPS1640 Laptop, with a WinTV-Nova-T TV card, ATI HD 3670. I can play any of the files using VLC, but MC just refuses most days.Funny (or sad) thing, as MC works fine under Vista on the very same laptop...just that other than that, I don't want to go back to Vista.
I am surprised (or may be disappointed) that there are such a huge number of complaints on the web about this specific issue, some dating back to XP days, and yet the problem still exists in Windows 7.I tried updating my SM-Bus drivers (Intel ICH9)...they are now the latest and best (according to Dell and Windows)..not sure about disabling them...but I might try and I haven't tried the date "fix" yet.It baffles me how some days it will just work...I have disabled automatic updates immediately after the last time it worked, set a restore point to try that out soon....But PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE Microsoft....get someone working on this!!! There are literally thousands out there getting very frustrated with this error! At present, there doesn't even seem to be an alternative to MCE for Win7...if there was, I would gladly pay for one!!! - *** Solved (for me at least) *** (workaround I guess at best)
I tried running Media Center as "Administrator" and it works fines. Close it and run as normal and I get the error again, close and run as admin, fine again...
What give Microsoft??
Note: This testing done on Windows 7 Ultimate (64 bit edition). Works fine all the time on Win7-32 bit edition on other PC's I have tested.
PS I tried the date fix (as noted by other forum contributers and no go).
