Unable to play TIVO files
I recently upgrade from Vista to Windows 7 and am now unable to watch any of the shows I have transfered from my TIVO. I have upgraded to the most current version of TIVO desktop and am running Media Player version 12.0.7100.0. I am also current on all updates.
The error message I get is "Windows Media Player encountered a problem while playing the file" and when I select "Weh Help" up pops this link:
"Windows Media Player Error Message HelpYou've encountered error message C00D11B1 while using Windows Media Player. The following information might help you troubleshoot the issue.
Cannot play the file
Windows Media Player cannot play the file. You might encounter this error message for one of the following reasons:
-
Your sound device, such as a sound card or sound controller, requires an updated driver. To determine if an updated driver is available, see Windows Update at the Microsoft Web site, or see the sound device manufacturer's Web site.
-
Your sound device is not functioning properly. Try using Device Manager to check the status of your sound device.
To check the status of your sound device-
Do one of the following:
-
If you are running Windows XP, click Start, right-click My Computer, and then click Manage.
-
If you are running Windows Vista, click Start, right-click Computer, and then click Manage.
-
-
In the pane on the left, click Device Manager.
-
In the pane on the right, expand Sound, video and game controllers, and then look for the name of your sound device.
-
Do one of the following:
-
If your sound device is listed but the icon includes a red "X," the device has been disabled. To enable the device, right-click the icon, and then click Enable.
-
If your sound device is not listed, in the pane on the right, expand Other devices. If Multimedia Audio Controller appears in the list, right-click the icon, and then click Update Driver or Update Driver Software. Follow the on-screen instructions to find and install the driver software.
If you are not able to find and install the correct driver software, see your computer manufacturer's or sound device manufacturer's Web site for further assistance.

You do not have a sound device installed on your computer. Install a sound device, and then try to play the file again. For details, see your computer manufacturer's or sound device manufacturer's Web site.

You are trying to play a file on the Internet and the server might be temporarily unavailable or there might be a network issue. Try again later.
-
You are trying to play an MP3 file that contains compressed ID3 headers. The ID3 header is a portion of the file that stores the song's album information (for example, the song name, artist name, album name, and genre). This information is sometimes called a "tag."
To fix the problem, make a copy of the file and then use a non-Microsoft ID3 tag editing program to remove or reset the file's ID3 headers. After you remove the ID3 headers, Windows Media Player should be able to play the MP3 file.
Attempting to remove ID3 headers might damage the file and make it unplayable. Therefore, always make a copy of the file before you edit it.
If this solution does not resolve the problem, the file might be corrupted."

- dja0100,
So, does your sound work fine for everything else?
Do you have the proper codec for these files? Bear in mind that a lot of people have had problems with 3rd party codecs.
Does your sound device show in Device Manager?
What do you have for sound hardware? - You should probobly try downloading VLC player which plays literally all types of files while you find a solution to the windows media player.
Im no computer wiz, my suggestion might be irrelevant to the problem, but its worth the try for a temporary solution - Hi dja0100:
Tivo allows you to capture and play DRM protected content on your TV but I'd be very surprised if you can copy any DRM protected content from a TIVO to your PC. The DRM protections are explicitly designed to prevent copying of protected content to other devices, be they DVD burners or PCs that can burn DVDs. I don't have a TIVO but I can't imagine it was designed to let people copy any content at all to PC but perhaps it may let recorded over the air channels that aren't DRM protected be copied.
A google search shows that almost every problem related to the C00D11B1 error message is DRM related.
- Sound works fine for everything else. Device does show up in control panel - Realtek High Definition Audio. Driver is provided by Realtek Semiconductor Corp., version 6.0.1.5772 dated 1/6/2009.
- Tivo does allow the copying of recorded video to authorized PCs for playback. I have been doing this for several years under XP & Vista. However now that I've upgraded to Windows 7 RC I can no longer view the recordings. So if there is a DRM issue it must reside with the way it is implemented within Windows 7.
- Hi dja0100:'
That sure surprises me! I do have a question about the recorded tv content you are trying to view. Do the recordings show up at all in Media Center under recorded TV? If not, have you tried opening Media Center go to tasks>settings>Media Libraries>check Recorded TV>Next>check Add folders to the library>Next>check On this computer>then hit the + sign next to each hard drive/partition and put a check next to Recorded TV for each>hit Next>check Yes, use these locations>click finish. Hopefully once the O.S. goes thru this set-up the files will all be properly marked for use in Media Center or Media Player. If you've already done this I'm out of suggestions! Do new shows copied from your tivo work?
My best guess. The tivo content is encrypted, you can copy it to your pc with their software and play it with the .tivo codec but you cant copy it to another computer and play it there. I imagine since you upgraded it may think its a new computer and wont play the protected content. I could be wrong because you do get a Media Access Key and if thats the same i would think it would play.
A solution would be to get a software package like http://sourceforge.net/projects/tivodecode/ or one of the many other decrypt and convert products.
Another posiibility, if you are running 64bit win7 and have made the 64bit WMP your default (32bit WMP is default on 64bit win7) you would have the same problem. The .tivo codec is 32bit so will only play in 32bit WMP and wont play in WMC because its 64bit only....- I had the same problem just today when I installed Windows 7 RC1 over my vista install that was playing .tivo files just fine. I found the only way I could fix it was to remove Tivo desktop software and reinstall it. I reinstalled 2.6.2 and then Windows Media Player in Windows 7 would play the files. I was getting the same message as you, so I would try reinstalling the tivo desktop software and see if that solves it for you.
- Thanks, that worked. I had tried to just to the update hoping that would copy over the necessary files, but I guess that wasn't enough. Now onto my itunes problem.
