Upgrading with special DRM bits
- Hello :-)
I have a Dell XPS 420 VISTA PC with "special DRM bits" from Dell for recording/unencrypting HDTV via an ATI TV Wonder Digital Cable Tuner (an ext USB device - TV source is Comcast Cable). I would like to upgrade to Win7 now.
Can I do either an in place upgrade (to try and preserve any needed DRM bits) or can I do a clean wipe & install to take adavantage of the 64 bit flavor of Win7?

- Here is the solution...MS released it today via Windows Update.

- Hi The-GMAN, as you may know that if you want to install X64 version of Windows 7, we need to perform a clean install if you have 32 bit version of Windows Vista installed on the computer currently. However, I consider you may need to contact with Dell to see if the "special DRM bits" is still available after performing an in-place upgrade to Windows 7.
Sean Zhu - MSFT - Hello Sean,
The "special DRM bits" are from Microsoft not Dell (sorry about that). They were part of a special VISTA OS to unlock HDCP/TV via a CableCard.
Does MS not know if we can upgrade these boxes to Win7? Dell says to contact you :-) Thanks for the update. Regarding DRM issue, I suggest you check the following two links for information:

You can check the steps and see if you can use the method in the KB article to backup the license. For your reference, here is another link about Windows Media DRM. You can check if the DRM you metioned belongs to Windows Media DRM as based on my experience, HDCP DRM is developed by Intel:
