QuestionMedia Center locks when looking thru movie thumbs

Windows 7 Pro full release with all the updates...windows experience=4.4
    Dell Precision 380 - Pentium 4 - 3.40GHz / 3.39GHz, 2GB memory
    Nvidia Quadro FX1400
movies all held on Seagate FreeAgent external HD and in the form of video_ts

fresh install...but when i click on movie library in WMC, it slowly pulls up the thumbs for the movies but when i start to navigate thru, it locks up after only moving a couple movies to the right. i can still hear the clicking sound as if it was still navigating, but the movie thumbs just stand still. its not a black out or anything of that sort, but i can't do anything but click on the X to close it out.

however, when I associate the drive folder as a video sub-type in WMC settings, i am able to navigate thru all the movie thumbs under the video library (albeit smaller versions of the movie section), i have no problems and everything works fine. obviously i'd rather use the movie section to peruse my movies...

any thoughts? suggestions? any info i've left out that you guys need to help diagnose?

    thanks
    lv

Hi lv, I suggest you follow the steps in the following thread to build movie library and see if the issue occurs:

    thanks for the reply Sean.

i've already set my machine up per the instructions except for the yammm.  but just for the sake of trying things out, i downloaded yammm and now my machine is sloooooow when i have WMC pulled up with the movie library.  i don't know if yammm is working in the background, but my PC is pegged at 100% usage.  the main processes that are running are dwm.exe and ehshell.exe.  both have tons of memory used.

in the process of writing this post, the CPU usage has dropped to minimal.  but WMC is still locked up.  i have to click the red X to close it otherwise nothing moves or changes on the WMC screen.

    i've included the below picture

Thanks for the update. I have checked the picture and I consider the memory usage for ehshell.exe (which belongs to Windows Media Center) is normal. Have you installed any third party codecs? If so, can you temporarily remove them and see the result? Also, I suggest you update your video card driver then check if the issue still occurs.

Does the issue occur if you include videos on local hard drive only?

i have the k-lite codec pack installed...

video card is already updated with the latest version of Nvidia drivers...

i do not have any local HD videos as they are all on my external drive...and each is over 4GB as they are direct rips of the DVDs that I own.  that's almost what i'm wondering is the problem.  these movies are not in .avi or .mpg or any other format other than VIDEO_TS.  I have always been able to watch the movies in this format with the help of the k-lite codec pack that has media player classic.

which brings me to another question...yammm...its not working or seems not to be working...how do i tell if it is working?  none of the folder.jpg files have been resized...no data has been downloaded...which is also the reason i think there is a problem with the way MC "sees" my files and locks up.

however, as i've said before, when i associate my folder that has all the movies with the pictures - videos library w/in MC...they all show the folder art (albeit smaller) and i have no problems scrolling thru and then clicking on the movie i want to watch and clicking on it to play.  no probs.  its all when i'm trying to view them in the movie library section...so to me...it almost has something to do with the movies portion of MC that is having a problem...ya know?

i will go ahead and move 2 movies over to the local hd and associate that folder to the movie library and see if that does anything and let you know.

here's something...i tried to add the folder containing the movies that i moved over from the external hd...MC won't add the folder to the movie library...now, i don't have any folder.jpg in them and again, both movies are in the VIDEO_TS.IFO type.

so my question, WMC when it comes to the movie section, doesn't seem to read or recognize VIDEO_TS.IFO file types correct?  the same thing goes for when i tried to associate the folder with the 2 movies with the video library, it won't add the folder.

i did look around in my other folder that has all my movies, and i do have 3 movies in avi format as i forgot that i had converted a couple when i was trying to get my movies to stream to my PS3.  i believe that's why i was able to associate my folder of movies to the movie library.

is there a way in which we can either make or trick MC into seeing VIDEO_TS.IFO files?  like i said before, when i associated the movie folder to the video library, i had no problems viewing the thumbs and playing the *.IFO files.

    thoughts?

Hi lavee383, regarding the problem, I suggest you check the following KB article:

How can I enable the DVD Library in Windows Media Center on a Windows Vista-based computer?
    http://support.microsoft.com/kb/930526

(Though this article is for Windows Vista, we can still give it a shot under Windows 7.)

You can also check another thread regarding a similar issue:

    Sean,

when i follow your link for enabling the DVD library in MC for Vista, i opened regedit as instructed, but per the instructions it states to right-click ShowGallery , and then click Modify .  I do not have an entry named "ShowGallery".  Do i need to create one and continue with the instructions or is there something else that i need to do w/in Win7?

as for your other link, I already have the folder that has the IFO files shared in the library.

    thoughts?
    thanks
