    Hi I have a Windows 7 Pro client machine on a LAN with a SBS 2003 R2 server as the domain controller. When I do a remote desktop from the Windows 7 machine to the SBS server I can login to the server and everything works fine. But when I go to the Server computer or any other computer on the LAN, I can not access the the Window 7 Professional machine. I get a message that says " Remote Sesktop Disconnected" The remote computer requires Network Level Authintication which your computer does not have. So far all the articles I have read only address Windows 2008 Server. Can I remote desktop to this computer using Windows 2003 SBS R2 or am I going to be required to upgrade the server computer if I want this feature to work with a Windows 7 box. Thanks

    As as work around until you figure out the SBS 2003 R2 issue, I think you could get by with this.
     on the win 7 box
    Under the system properties, Remote
     You would need to select "Allow connections from computers~(less secure)

    Hi,

    I tried that and many other things I read about on Microsofts website but its not that easy, I am afraid to say. I am sure I am not alone in this problem if anyone else has a 2003 SBS server and wants to add a Windows 7 machine to the domain and then wants to RDC to it. It appears they make a newer client for XP but I don't see any options for SBS to support Netwrk Level Authentication no matter where I search on the internet.
    Anyone, please help!!!

      I guess the basic problem is that Microsoft doesn't expect a user to run the RDP client on a server. I have never used RDP from a server to a client machine. I do it the other way most of the time. Most people don't sit at the server console very often.

     There is an RDP 7 client for Vista and XP, as you say.

    Actually its a tool right in the server management feature of SBS 2003. Its handy to take a peek at various computers across the LAN and to do various administrative tasks to the client machines on the LAN. I use it all the time remotely offsite as a way to fix my customers client machines and run defrags, updates, etc...

    Hi,

     

    Please try the following:

     

    1.    Update the RDP client in Windows 2003 SBS R2.

     

    2.    Please also check the firewall settings in Windows Firewall with Advanced Security.

     

    You can try the following to disable Windows Firewall and check if it works:

     

    In an elevated command prompt, run following command:

     

    Netsh advfirewall set allprofiles state off

    Hi Nicholas,

    I will try the things you suggested, but I already looked for an updated RDP client for SBS and could not locate one. Can you send me a hyperlink to where I can download it?
     Also are you referring to doing all these things at the Windows 7 machine or the server. Sorry for my ignorance. I realy appriciate the help.

    The latest version of RDP client for Windows 2003 Server is Remote Desktop Connection 6.0:

     

    Remote Desktop Connection (Terminal Services Client 6.0)

     

    For the suggestion #2, please just do it in Windows 7 client.
