    I'm trying to network a Windows 7 Pro and Windows XP Pro SP3 system. The Windows XP machine can access shared files on the Windows 7 PC. However, when I try to access the Windows XP system from the Windows 7 machine, I get the message "[machine name] is not accessible. You might not have permission to use this network resource. Contact the administrator of thie server to find out if you have access permissions. Logon failure: the user has not been granted the requested logon type at this computer."

    Each PC can ping the other. They are connected (Ethernet) through a router. Each system has Internet access. The Win7 system is 192.168.1.3; WinXP is 192.168.1.2; gateway for each is 192.168.1.1.

    Windows XP system: Compaq PC, XP Pro SP3 with current patches, 2.2 G processor, 3 G RAM, 140 G drive with 113 G free.

    Windows 7 system: HP PC, Win7 Pro 64 bit with current patches, 2.2 G processor, 8 G RAM, 914 G drive with 868 G free.

    Hi

    what i recommend your next

    A

    1. if the xp pc an AD member. - check domain group policies

    2. if isn't check local policy on that PC

    B

    Check on XP machine to disable firewall and try then. If will works, check in firwall's config to enable remote desktop connections

    Try creating a new user on the XP machine with the same user ID and password you are using on the Windows 7 machine.

    Thanks for the suggestion, Jerry, but I already tried that. Even with both machines signed in on matching IDs (same user name, same password), the Windows 7 system can't connect to the XP one.

    No active domain, so I don't think that's it. I'll check the firewall status and let you know if that solved the problem. Thank you again.

    Romeo Donca - THANK YOU! Once I enabled desktop access in the firewall config on the XP system, the Windows 7 system was able to access shared files on XP.

    Hi I have tried everything possible on forums for the last month with no luck until today. I did this and it worked like charm!!!!! Follow these instructions and all should work for you.

    If you are using Windows XP or Vista and the network machine running Windows XP is refusing your attempt for access via network displaying "Access is denied" or "You might not have permission to use this network resource. Contact the administrator of this server to find out if you have access permissions." error as shown below, just follow the simple registry hack to fix it.

  • 1. Goto Windows Start Menu -> Run, typin regedit and press Enter key to launch Windows Registry Editor.
  • 2. Navigate to - HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE/SYSTEM/CurrentControlSet/Control/Lsa
  • 3. Change value of key restrictanonymous to 0.
  • 4. Reboot computer to apply change.

    You can also use the Registry files below to apply and undo the hack, simply download and double-click to apply.
