cannot reset wireless adapter WEP key
- Just upgraded to Win7. All worked ok at first. Joined wireless network ok, WEP 128-bit key.
Next day, wireless is dead. Can connect via Ethernet cable, but it's a pain.
I have tried to reconnect to wireless network, it fails.
Troubleshoot & repair fails.
Belkin WUSB54G adapter shows as fine in Control Panel.
I'd like to re-enter the WEP key, but am unable to do so.
Can you help?

Try logging into the router config page with ethernet cable for the time being and set the ssid and passphrase for both router config page as well as the wireless device/connection under your comp (best would be to disable any wep or wpa for the time being, once the Belkin WUSB54G wireless is detected, save and exit from the router)
Next try connecting with the wireless connection- Marked As Answer byNovak WuMSFT, ModeratorMonday, November 09, 2009 8:55 AM

To reset the WEP key, you need access the Wireless router's configuration page and change a new WEP key or disable WEP key. For more information to access Wireless router's configuration page, please refer to the link below or refer to your router's instruction manual.

You could access the router config page by logging in using it's default IP, Linksys routers, for example, use 192.168.1.1 for their internal IP address. D-Link and Netgear routers typically use 192.168.0.1. unless you or someone have change the default IP to something else previously. Alternatively you could use a straightened paper clip to poke the back of a router (unit labeled Reset.) Hold the paperclip/reset down for 10 seconds and next release it. The unit will reboot on its own.
As soon as the lights stop blinking, the unit is ready.
If you changed your password previously, it will be gone so refer to your user's guide for your router. Most router-passwords are blank or "admin- I guess I did not explain very well.
The wireless router is working fine. Oter computers hook up ok to it.
It is the wireless adapter on my Win7 computer that won't hook up ny more. Here are some suggestions you can try:
1. Temporarily turn off firewall on the machine.
2. Assure the SSID and passphrase is the same for the router config page.
3. Upgrade the Wireless network adapter driver for Windows 7. If there is no Windows 7 driver, you can install the driver for Windows Vista in Compatibility Mode.
If the issue persists, please reinstall the network adapter driver and collect the following log file.
Collect the Netmon trace
=========================
a. Download NetMon3.3 from the following website and install it on the computer
b. Launch NetMon3.3.
c. In the Microsoft Network Monitor 3.3 window, click Create a new capture tab …
d. In the new tab, select all the Network Adapters in the Select Networks window.
e. Then, switch to Network Monitor, press F5 to start NetMon.
f. Try to access the Wireless network. When it failed, go to step 7.
g. Go back to the NetMon window and press F7 to stop the NetMon.
h. Press Ctrl+S to save the Netmon file named test.
Then please upload to SkyDrive (www.skydrive.live.com ) and share the link to me.
Thanks,
Novak
- ok, here you go! It's DuncanRhodes-test.cap
Until I hooked up the Ethernet cable, there were no network adapters to select...
the capture is with the Ethernet cable plugged in..

BTW, the NetMon3.3 download page would benefit with an explanation of the differences between the 3 download files. Had to try 2 to get 1 to work.

- Hi,
The above link could not be accessed. Could you upload the file to Skydrive again for research?
Also, please perform Daniel's suggestions strictly.

Thanks,
Novak - A long call with MS Tech Support for Networking has fixed the issue!!
The problem is that Win7 will NOT utilize WEP security.
Guess it worked until my first updates, & then WEP was killed off, & wireless adapter would not connect.
Password dialog box never came up, connection just failed.
The troubleshooting dialogs said everyt5hing was fine.
We changed the wireless router to WPA Personal security & all is well!
