When you have a network connection that is not connected on Windows7 machine (even if your main connection works fine) you get red X on Network activity icon.
To reproduce install virtual pc or another virtual machine app like virtualbox and you'll notice Network activity icon gets a red X.

Is this by design? Although connection of main adapter works fine it is quite annoying to see a red X

    Hi,

Does the issue occur without VPN?

After starting the Virtual PC, please open "Settings" option in Virtual PC. In "Networking" option, please change the network adapter for a test, such as "Shared Networking", Internal Network.

If the issue persists, please collect the following information for research.

    1. Click the Start Button and type "cmd" (without quotation marks) in the open box.

    2. Right click CMD and click "Run as Administrator" option, and then click Yes.

    3. In the open command window, input the following command and press Enter Key after it.

    Ipconfig /all >C:\pingresult.txt

    4. Please open Computer and navigate to C:\ folder to find the "pingresult.txt" file and post the result here.

    Thanks,

    Novak

How many network adapter is installed on the computer?

Usually, there is no red X on Network activity icon if the connection is fine. You can temporarily disable all other useless network adapters (Also remove the virtual PC and Virtual box software) and only keep using the main connection adapter for a test. Please also upgrade the main connection adapter driver.

If the issue persists, please capture a screenshot of "Network and Sharing Center" window for research. Please upload the picture to Skydrive (www.skydrive.live.com) and share the link to me.

    Thanks,

    Novak

When there is no virtual adapter + no Incoming VPN setup everything is ok. Call me obsessive :) but it is annoying to see a red X on your networkd icon.
I also would like to use my virtual machines without seeing red X

We too have the red x.
Not in VM or anything extraordinary.

Same happened to me a few months ago,it wasnt really bothering me tho cuz i had the connection working fine, but one day i decided to look through adpters settings then i noticed there were 2 more adapters enabled besides the one i use to connect to internet,i just disabled those two(local area connection and wireless) then on the next connection dialed it worked just fine and the icon was OK...so if any of u have other adapter than the one u use for internet enabled try to disable them and then connect to internet to see if it works for ya..
    All my best,
    RR
