AnswerWindows 7 crashing Windows 2003 server!

I've recently installed Windows 7 Professional and joined it to a 40 person windows 2003 domain. 3 times now, while large files were being copied either two or from the Windows 7 workstation to the Windows 2003 server standard SP2 (all patched up to date), the server has become unresponsive and had to be hard rebooted.

The first two times was when a file over 4 GB was in a roaming profile for the user who was logging in.
The last time was when a 150MB file was being downloaded from the internet directly to a network file share on the server from the Windows 7 workstation.

Each time, the server could not be contacted by any clients, the console display goes gray with no desktop showing and the server needs to be powered down.

    Any input would be appreciated.

    Thanks!

    Mike

Currently we have not experienced similar issues, therefore it should not be a data transfer or SMB protocol issue. The server may not hangs, when the issue occurs the network may be extremely busy so you cannot access it via management console.

How does it work if you disable anti-virus?

Does the issue occur all the time?

Now we need to confirm when the issue occurs, whether the server computer freeze, or the network traffic is overload and blocked. You may monitor the status of the Windows Server 2003 computer locally and let us know the result.

Meantime I suggest that you temporary disable firewall and anti-virus from the Windows Server 2003 computer and check the result.

    Thanks Arthur.

As you can imagine, I'm reluctant to try and replicate the problem as the server is in a production environment.

I have done one or two large file copies (from the server to the workstation) that have not resulted in a server crash, but none, from the workstation to the server.

There is no firewall running on the server and I'll disable the AV. The server is definitely freezing as it cannot be interacted with even at the console. There are no errors in the Event Viewer.

Could this be a data transfer rate issue or a SMB issue?

    Thanks for your help,

    Mike

    Mike,

We just added a new Windows 7 computer to our Windows Server 2003 domain as well. We have not experienced any issues with it locking up the servers... YET. I am in the same boat too as far as the servers being in a production environment. I can not take the risk of locking up our server during peak times. My question for you though is how you applied the domain policy to your Windows 7 Machine. I have read that RSAT is the key if you are running a Server 2003 environment, but I want to see if this is how you are doing it. If I am understanding it correctly, you only need 1 Windows 7 machine with RSAT installed to control group policy for all domain computers running Windows 7. Is that what you have?

    Thanks for your help,

    Chris

    Dear Arthur,

I have the same problem in my productive environment when I try to copy some files from Windows 2003 SMB to Windows 7 (both are latest patches).

My environment is 1 Windows 2003 SBS become Active Directory, 1 XP SP3, 1 Windows 7.

When I copy few files even under 1 MB data such as word, excel, jpg, the client and server PC must hang. Same case of Mike, the network is down(other XP cannot connect the server's share folder), PC hangs, server cannot shutdown.

I will try to disable anti-virus later
    Thx
