Wireless network not working after Sleep
-
Saturday, January 17, 2009 11:33 AMHi All,
My wireless network does not work and even the worse, it does not even get listed in the Available Networks after a Sleep. I have to restart my computer to get connected to my wireless network. I am not sure how to troubleshoot this issue.
May be its my nVidia Video Card creating problems? - My video card - NVidia GeForce 9800 GT (Prerelease - WDDM 1.1)

Saturday, January 17, 2009 11:58 AMWindows always had problems with sleep, mostly with nvidia drivers, i have the same as you in a Dell XPS 630i and my mouse was froxen most of the time after i got out of sleep caused by the nvidia drivers.
With windows 7 i put it to sleep 4 times without problems, if you do a "sigverif" it will give you the drivers causing problems.

Saturday, January 17, 2009 4:53 PMYour video card has nothing to do with this. It is likely your network card drivers that are having a tizzy fit when windows comes back from stand by mode. My daughter has a Dell Inspiron 1525 and the Dell wireless card every since I updated my router's firmware to support WPA2, will now lose it's connection after returning from stand by or hibernation. My other two notebooks are running Windows 7, one has a Linksys Wireless WPC54G card and it does not have the issue, the other is and HP notebook with a Intel Wireless WiFi Link 4965AG, and it does not have any issues with the stand by recovery or hibernation as well.I would check to make sure you have a current driver for the wireless card, or at least check through the change logs or release notes on other releases of drivers for your card to see if anything like that is mentioned.

Thursday, May 21, 2009 3:49 PMI have the same problem on an Alienware 5900. It also occurs on the Vista install I had on there previously (even though Alienware claims it's "Certified for Vista" - that's a farce).
I have the latest network drivers installed. I'm not sure where the problem lies (though my guess is Alienware/Dell's lack of driver support), but one thing is clear - the upgrade to Windows 7 didn't solve any issues I have with the laptop (if anything, the upgrade has introduced more problems).

Friday, May 22, 2009 12:03 PMHaving the same problem on my home-built tower, but with ethernet connection, not wireless. And when I try to restart, the computer hangs at "Shutting Down" message, so that I have to manually press the restart button on my box. Once restarted, all is well until next standby.

Please run Windows Update and confirm that you are running the latest updates for your wireless network adapters. If you have the latest updates and you are still seeing problems, please reply with:
--- make/model of the Wi-Fi card. You can get this by typing "netsh wlan sho dr" on the command prompt
----make/model of your Wi-Fi router
--- problem symptoms
--- reproduction steps for problem to happenThanks,

Monday, May 25, 2009 12:11 AMHi Alok,
I have the same problem on a wired connection. Here's my details:
NIC card is: Atheros AR8121/AR8113/AR8114 PCI-E Ethernet Controller (NDIS6.20)
This is the onboard NIC for my ASUS M4A78-E Motherboard
Router is: DLINK DIR-628
Symptoms and how to re-produce: When I let my PC go to sleep from Inactivity or Hibernate, the network connection shows a red X. When I try to re-enable, it shows limited connectivity and a PC restart does not fix this. I have to manually disable and re-enable the NIC card to allow this to work.
Thanks for your help.

Monday, May 25, 2009 1:05 AMHi Alok,Same problem on a wired and wireless connection. Installed the latest updates from Microsoft.Intel Pro/Wireless 3945ABG Network connectionLinksys G ADSL GatewayModel: WAG5AG V3Preety much close lid, turn computer on sleep and it will not connect to my wireless network. I have changed power management settings in network driver, i have ensured I have the latest software and it still keeps happening. I use to be able to re-start my computer and have the internet working again (until I put it to sleep or close the lid) however it will not even connect at all. When I try to connect and use troubleshoot it identifies it as a "Network Adaptor" issue.Currently using the RC version of Windows 7. On Beta I was able to disable my wireless when it went to sleep and be able to re-enable the wireless and connect to the internet -No Probs- but RC doesnt even work at all. Thanks for your help!Jai

Monday, May 25, 2009 10:28 PMHey everyone!
I have the same problem. My computer is a notebook Dell XPS 1530, my wlan is a Mini-PCI 1395 Dell, Windows7 Ultimate 64bits, and the router i think is not important because i had the same problem with a least 3 diferents(netgear router, linksys router, linksys Acces Point), and with diferents types of security (WPa2, WPA, not at all, etc).
I tried to update my drivers, but i got the same problem, and Windows Update is running always, and I manually check for updates but nothing really helps
Everytime my notebook goes to sleep, i have to restart to get internet conection again...
I hope somebody can help me
(PS: Sorry, i'm from Costa Rica, so my english isn't good)
Thanks in advance -

Tuesday, June 02, 2009 7:34 PMHi,
here's another case on Build 7100/64. CPU is Intel E8400 dual core. I'm running a brand new "Linksys Wireless-G PCI Adapter" which can't reconnect after a Sleep or Hibernate cycle. It may have started once, but on the 3 other trials I've had to restart the computer. Clicking on the WLAN bars and its sub-menus, or doing a disable-enable cycle of the board doesn't bring it back on line.
Borge
I hope this helps:

Thursday, July 02, 2009 5:31 PMHey folks:
My problem with the wireless seems to be solved by some windows update i didn't remember.
Nothing else I did, so it must be the WU.
So guys, turn on WindowsUpdate and wait to be online again, after the sleep -
Friday, July 03, 2009 2:10 AMWindows Update didn't fix it for me so doesn't look like that's it. However, if you go into the "Wireless Network Connection Properties", click "Configure" to bring up your adapter properties, and switch to the "Power Management" tab, you can disable the option to "Allow the computer to turn off this device to save power". This fixed the issue for me. Although it would be nice to save power, it's much more of a hassle to not be able to use your wireless adapter when you return from Standby. Hope this helps someone else!
Cheers! -

Alok,
I have a HP laptop - model DV6408nr running Windows 7 build 7100.
When it goes into time-out sleep mode, it wakes up with a "Limited Access" star on my wifi connection.
Disabling / enabling doesn't fix it. Uninstalling driver / adding new device doesn't fix it.
Rebooting is the only way to correct the problem, until it wakes from sleep mode again.... Might as well
just shut itself down for me at this point...I have a security "grace period" set between screen-off and password wake requirement. If it wakes up before
it needs a password entered, wifi works. If I have to enter a password, it doesn't work.Updating drivers did not help. Going back to original MS autodetect-driver worked for a couple of days.
I think it autoupdated to a newer driver, and it stopped working. Uninstalling / redetecting no longer
fixes the problem.

telarc,
I don't know if you saw my post, but try disabling the option to "Allow the computer to turn off this device to save power" on your wireless network adapter. The reason why mine wasn't working is because sleep mode was turning off my device and then coming out of sleep mode wasn't properly turning the adapter back on. -
Sunday, August 09, 2009 2:28 AMMine is unchecked since i installed the modem but for some reason it keeps going to a nap...
but that in my case which im 100% sure my modem has been modified and its bugged...

Monday, December 14, 2009 5:11 AMok everyone, stop freaking out!!! I found a solution . Anyways, this is not the problem of ur wireless card OR windows 7. Its just a feature that shouldnt rele be a feature. Anyways to fix this problem,
Step 1: Click on Start and go to Control Panel. In the Control Panel, Click on Small Icons to VIEW.
Step 2: Find Network and Sharing Center and open it.
Step 3: On the left side, you will see an option that says "Change adapter settings". Open it
Step 4: You will two connections there, local and wireless. Right Click on WIRELESS one and select properties.
Step 5: Now Click on CONFIGURE.
Step 6: You will see 5 tabs, click on the last one that says "power management"
Step 7: Now simply UNCHECK the first box that says "Allow the computer to turn off this device to save power"
Thats it, you are done. NOW you can do whatever you want, put it to sleep, stand by, hibernate ... and yea you wont have a problem anymore :)
I bet this will fix your problem so you are WELCOME :p

I did what you said and my computer was already unchecked at the power mamagement box you suggested. Upon waking from sleep the adaptor was unconnected. Now I just HIBERNATE instead of sleep and no more disconnects so far. Gave up trying to fix the Sleep, At least for now, gled you got yours to work.

Tuesday, December 21, 2010 8:09 PMPROBLEM FIXED - for me at least. I had the same problem for some time and have tried various forums to find a fix. I am using Windows 7 Home Editon 64 bit with a Realtech RTL8191SE wireless card which would not reconnect to my wireless network after Sleep mode. My problem is now fixed by going direct to the Realtech website and downloading the latest driver, the WindowsUpdate always showed my driver as being up to date, which evidently was not the case, prior to going direct to Realtech. So my recommendation is find out exactly what wireless card you are using and then going to the OEM website and downloading the latest driver. Good luck!

Wednesday, June 15, 2011 4:02 AMMy wife's Dell, Windows 7 OS, with a Broadcom 81xx wireless adapter, would have issues (with two different wireless routers) reconnecting with the wireless network at home after waking from 'sleep'. I verified the wireless adapter had the most recent drivers and it's properties were set to NOT conserve power. Even after the aforementioned, the laptop would not connect after 'sleeping'. But her problem was an issue with 'hibernation', not 'sleep'. Three days ago I changed the "what to do when closing the lid" from 'hibernate' to 'sleep'. Three days later, and multiple times going into and out of 'sleep' (not hibernation), the latpop connects without issue. I hope this simple fix helps every else who has exhausted the other possible solutions like we did.

Hi, I have had similar problems, and I have tried all the suggestions I have found, but finally think i have sorted it out....
I have a HP pavillion dv6 with a Ralink rt 3090 card
I completely uninstalled my wireless card downloaded the driver direct from the HP website and reinstalled - problem solved, im not sure why but it is!
(make sure you download the driver before you uninstall the card!!)
Hope this can help some of you

I am totally frustrated with this problem and with Microsoft's lack of response to it.
The problem seems to be with Win 7's Homegroup.
See this forum.

WORK AROUND:
I too have this problem, and only have a workaround, but at least you do not have to restart windoze.
I created a shortcut on my desktop for the network adapter. Start -> control panel -> network sharing center(or what ever yours is titled), ->'change adapter settings. Now you will see a listing of your adapters, and can drag the appropriate one to your desktop or quick launch. I did this to save all the steps to go find it.
When i wake from sleep, i right click this short cut, and disable the adapter. I wait about a second and then enable the adapter. The network will then reconnect.

This is what fixed it for me:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Servic es\Tcpip\Parameters
new DWORD
name: ArpRetryCount
leave value at default(0)
restartThanks to dave454 over at bit-tech.net

Sunday, February 24, 2013 1:03 PMMy ASUS X5DIJ would loose wireless on sleep and after restart, i would have to manually turn it on every time ... I changed power saving settings, registry etc nothing worked, and then one day i noticed a rattle in my laptop , a screw had come loose i new this sound because it had happened before ( the sweat shop workers never propperly tightened my screws.. dont blame them!) Anyway so i opened the laptop found the screw and found a screw hole with an arrow on it ( i think where the network card connects to the motherboard) so i replaced the screw and re tightened all the screws i could see , and now no problems with wireless card, this must have been the problem a loose screw...
