If Windows Update does not work fine, the first step could be downloading and running the System Update Radiness Tool (http://windows.microsoft.com/en-us/windows7/What-is-the-System-Update-Readiness-Tool); if this doesn't work too, read the Microsoft Knowledge base article 971058 and reset the Windows Update components.
