Hi, I have 7 home premium and I am trying to delete the folder "Public" under "Users" on my C drive. Despite having full control and permission to delete the folder and the subfolders I still seem to need permission by myself to remove that folder. I have been able to delete the subfolders (e.g. Picture , Music, Downolads) but not that folder. Any solution? Thanks.

    Hi,

Why do you want to delete it? There are many use of Public folder. We can share files easily with it. I do not recommend to delete it.

Hi, thank you for your reply.

Many reasons. I am the only user of this pc and I am not in any network so I don't need to share things with anyone. More, everytime I create files they are automatically saved in the public folder, taking space on the disk and I have to go and remove them from there.

Do you know how I can remove that folder? I feel it is imposed on me and the fact that I cannot delete it makes me feel as I don't have full control of my own PC.

Thanks in advance for your reply.

It's a system protected folder, so deletion of any folder with UAC on will be sometimes tricky. Open a cmd prompt as Administrator and try deletion from here.

Also some processes (sharing, homegroup stuff etc) can still keep the folder open, therefore deletion is not possible. System hidden files may be stored there, causing the same result.

Also sometimes applications or their installers rely on the existence of this folder, and you may end up with strange errors, if the folder and its subfolders are not longer there. So it's not a good idea to delete all what you think YOU won't need.

Believe it or not, the time in which you have really full control over your system has ended.

    Hi Olaf,

Thank you very much for taking the time to reply. I thought that was the situation and your reply confirms my fears.
