    Please let me know if there's a more appropriate forum for this question.

    Thanks to the age-old AUTOEXNT I have an old app running on the services desktop.  I can easily switch to that desktop to administer the app but while there I cannot open its help file (.HLP).  I have installed the KB917607 update to restore WinHlp capability and that works while I'm on my mormal desktop.  Does anyone have an idea how I might get WinHpl32 working for the SYSTEM user and on the services desktop?  If it matters, I'm an admin and running under UAC.  Thanks.

    More on this  ... CHM files won't open either.  I can do most anything ... start any *.mmc, run various programs (regedit, editors).  I thought perhaps HLPfiles and CHMfiles might need Explorer but they work fine on my usual desktop after I've terminated Explorer.  And "SYSTEM" has read/execute rights to WINHLP32.EXE, as well as full control of the HLP file in question.  I'm at a loss.  Why can't HLPfiles and CHMfiles show on the services desktop?

    Hi,

    From your description, I understand that you cannot open .chm file and .hlp file. But could you explain what is “services desktop”? 

    As a test, you could try to check this problem in Clean Boot:
    http://support.microsoft.com/kb/929135

    Note: Clean Boot is a step of troubleshooting, we can go back to normal by running MSCONIFG.

    Hi, William.  I have an app (SMTP server) which is not written as a service.  Using (the old) AUTOEXNT, I run it as a service.  AUTOEXNT also starts a command prompt (for testing purposes).  Both the SMTP server and the command prompt attempt to interact with the desktop.  This is detected by Win7's "UI0Detect" service and UI0Detect presents me with an opportunity to switch to the services desktop (a rather dreary place).  It is there (where I can do most things, as "nt security/system") where I cannot launch HLP or CHM files.
