Thursday, November 19, 2009 4:45 PMFor 7 MS has new Group Policy options including "Always use custom logon background" (Computer Config > Policies > Admin Templates > System > Logon). Additionally there are some 3rd party tools that make it even easier for users.

No, so that people looking for the answer to your questions will not have to browse an entire thread to find the solution :)

Please take the following steps to replace Logon UI logo.
1. Click Start, type Regedit and press Enter
2. Navigate to
3. Change value of OEMBackground to 1.
4. Now navigate to %windir%\system32\oobe, create folder “info”, double click it and create another new folder “backgrounds”
5. Now place your desired logon file into %windir%\system32\oobe\info\backgrounds
6. Rename the file to backgroundDefault.jpg. (Please NOTE: Images must be less than 256kb in size).
Hope it helps.
Monday, January 25, 2010 4:12 PMI'm curious...Is the kb in 256kb kilobits?or is it kilobytes?I thought lower case b meant bits and uppercase B meant Bytes.Either way, if you use explorer to confirm the size of your file it will say KB, alas, 255KB is not a valid size. There is some magical number less than that that does work.I had to keep sizing my pic down from 255KB (in explorer view) by 1% each time until I got it to show.It finally showed when explorer reported my picture as 247KBNow I'm wondering what size it has to be?lets see...2^18 = 262144 (which would be a logical size req, some power of 2, makes sense right? This is after all a computer)Now, a file I got to workexplorer reports my file as 247KBand cmd prompt reports my file as 252,590The previous file that did not workexplorer says 255KBcmd prompt 260,236
Either way, they are all less than 2^18, yet only 1/2 of 'em don't work.Sooo easy... Thanks MS.
