Windows 7 "hidden" fonts NOT "hidden" in Word 2007's monster weed garden of fonts
- Hello,
So what's the point of having Hideable fonts?
I thought the point of making fonts "Hideable" in Windows 7 was that they would no longer show up as visible to applications? (They'd be accessible to the OS in a crucial event.)
Right now, simply with the standard installation of MS Office Ultimate, Word 2007's font menu is a WEED GARDEN. I can't trim it to a short, pleasing list of preferred fonts.
I created an "unhidden" Super Admin account in Local Security Policy to see whether hiding fonts would actually work any better. It does not.
Please fix. (This is Win 7 RC x64.)
Or, if anyone can tell me a registry key to edit down the list of fonts that Word 2007 sees, it would be MUCH appreciated.
Incidentally, the Fonts panel says something about "installing" a Shortcut instead of the full font package. Can someone explain the procedure for this?
I am really, really liking Win 7. Thank YOU for this IMPRESSIVELY fast OS!!!!!

- I don't know why it would not do that. it sounds like a bug.

Hello a.k.a,
You are right, the purpose of the “Hide” functionality in Windows 7 is to make the “hidden” fonts not visible to applications, thought by the moment this functionality just apply for the applications shipped on Windows 7, or applications that uses the font selection UI box (The one used by Notepad or Paint). There is not plan to change this functionality for Windows 7, anyhow, it is under consideration for future releases of Windows. Right now the only way you have to shorten the Word Font List is by uninstalling the fonts you don’t want from the system.
Regarding your second question, the procedure is quite simple; once you allow the installation of fonts using a shortcut (Font Folder -> Font settings -> Installation settings, then OK ), you can right click on the Font File you wish to install by shortcut, and then select the option “Install by shortcut”. Doing this the system will update the necessary registry settings and the font will became visible to applications (keeping the file in its original location). Anyway, if by any reason the Font File is not accessible to the system, (it was deleted by mistake, or a Network drive is not accessible), this font won’t be usable.
