how to make files without extensions open with Wordpad by default.

Tuesday, January 29, 2013 7:09 PMI am trying to figure out how to make extensionless files open up with Word pad by default. I found a registry setting that will allow the files to be opened with Notepad, but I can't figure out how to get Wordpad to be the default program for files without extensions. I can right click the file and select open with WordPad, but cant get it set as the default.

Here's something maybe a little safer.
It adds a WordPad entry in the right-click context menu that will open any file, including those without an extension.
Credit to Brian Borg.
I modified his instructions a little. The %ProgramFiles% he used doesn't expand reliably for me in a REG_SZ.
You could also just put a link to WordPad in your SendTo folder.

Thanks for the info Mustafa. I did try that and it does save one click by not having to select "open with" and then the program. However, I finally figured out how to do set this up so that I can just double click the extensionless file and have it open up in WordPad. This screenshot shows the registry entry that I added.
