QuestionPrograms hanging if mouse is not moved/clicked

    Hi.

When I use Visual Studio 2003 in XP-mode on my Win7 computer, I experience some odd behavior: If I try to compile a C++ program, the compilation seems to stop and will only continue if I move the mousepointer over the VS2003 window repeatedly. As soon as I stop moving the mouse, the compilation stops.
Anyone have a suggestion on what this might be?

Recently I got a similar behavior in one other program: After downloading/installing the latest iTunes (9.02), one of the demonstration videos (synching with iPhone) would not show the pictures unless i moved/clicked the mouse in that window. The sound was working as normal.

MS Win 7 Ultimate 64 bit
    Version 6.1.7600 Build 7600

Microsoft Development Environment 2003 Version 7.1.3088 (VS 2003)

What is your host?  Is it a laptop?  What is your power scheme set to?  Try 'high-performance'

No, it is not a laptop, but thanks for the answer.

What's the hardware?  Would you mind giving more details?  More info always helps.

Interesting.  Other than the hard drives, I have that exact same set up and am not seeing issues with WinVPC.  I wonder if its bios related, I flashed up to the 0504 version.

Do you have speedstep enabled?  Even though this is a desktop motherboard, you can use speedstep and cpu throttling, both could cause the issue you're seeing.

Are you running any of the Asus utilities for overclocking, Asus EPU, TurboV, etc?   Anything that's reducing CPU power could be causing this.

I'm not sure what speedstep and cpu throttling is, but in the Processor power management settings, both minimum and maximum processor state is set to 100%.

Maybe I should try flashing the BIOS.

    Thanks for your suggestions.

Before you flash the bios, which can turn out to be a nightmare if things go wrong, try this first.
Go into the BIOS, and turn off SpeedStep, IIRC its under the CPU or Advanced section.

Tried that, but no change in behavior of the Virtual PC.

Thanks anyway, really appreciate your help.
