Windows 7 virtual PC Host physical adapter not available for bridged network connection

Have had virtual PC running on 64bit Windows proffessional machine for some time with a number of guests configured with bridged network adapters via the hosts physical adapter (Broadcom Netlink Gigabit Ethernet). However while troubleshooting an un-related network issue I had to un-install & re-install the network adapter & drivers. However now virtual PC doesnt see the hosts network card and doesn't list the hosts physical adapter in the drop down list under network settings when configuring a VM, the only options are 'Not Connected', 'Internal Network', and 'Shared NAT'. Have so far tried the following without successs..
1) Un-installed - Re-installed virtual PC
2) Confirmed 'Virtual PC Network Filter Driver' is enabled on adapter properties
3) Deleted the 'Options.xml' file which is re-created by virtual pc but still without the network adapter settings
All the above have failed to resolve the issue so existing & new VM's can not use the bridged adapter.
Does anyone know how to make virtual PC re-discover the hosts network adapter?

Hi,
You can try to perform these steps to solve the problem:
1 Click “Start”
2 Input “network and sharing center” in Search Box and press Enter
3 Click “Change adapter settings” on the left pane
4 Right click “Local Area Connection” and click “Properties”
5 Select “Virtual PC Network Filter Driver”
6 Click “OK”
7 Reboot PC
If the “Virtual PC Network Filter Driver” is already select, deselect it first, reboot PC, then enable it again.
Hope that helps.

Hi,
I have already tried this several times, it makes no difference. I have even un-installed & re-installed the filter driver, rebooted, and still the adapter is not visible in virtual PC.

Did this issue appear before? Try to perform system restore from a well worked point.
If the issue persists, an in-place upgrade may fix the issue:

Hope that helps.

No, the issue only occurred when the network adapter was re-installed, never happen prior to that.
I tried returning to a restore point previousley, there were only 2 available and both failed so the only option is a forward fix.
Will try the inplace upgrade to see if that helps.
Thanks.

Friday, March 18, 2011 5:43 PMPleased to report that the in-place upgrade fixed the problem, had to re-install VPC again after but then the hosts NIC became visible again. Also seem to fix one or two other problems I had such as not being able to install SP1. Thanks for the suggestion!

Hi, I am experiencing the same problem after bridging my NICs and unbridging them again. I've tried the in-place upgrade but Windows 7 will not allow it as it claims the installed version is newer than the one on the install DVD. Any ideas? Thanks.
N.B. I've removed and reinstalled the drivers for the NICs and also removed and reinstalled Virtual PC, rebooting in between each step of course, and I still don't see either of my NICs in the network options in VPC settings.
UPDATE
After much investigation I traced my issue to ZoneAlarm Internet Security Pro (v9). I had to fully remove the software before the NIC would show again in VPC. There is nothing about this issue on the ZoneAlarm or Microsoft Forums which I find really surprising. Anyway, I hope this info helps.

I stumbled across this thread because I had the same problem.
This solution worked perfectly for me.
