Answered Unable to Browse Network in Compatibility Mode

    I am running an instance of XP Compatibility Mode on Win-7 but for reasons unknown I am unable to browse the network. I can however attach to pre-existing shares as originally setup under Windows-7. Also, browsing the network under Win-7 is not an issue, all is well.


    Simple File Sharing is enabled.

    Is there a setting I am overlooking that precludes me from see other network resources?

    I would try turning off simple file sharing.  Also make sure the
    Workgroup is set the same. (if it's not a domain member)

    Thanks Bob, will give that a try.

    Another question: I noticed that after installing the application to run in compatibility mode it is now showing in the Win-7 Start Menu under 'Windows Virtual PC'. E.g.:

    Start --> All Programs --> Windows Virtual PC --> and then the application.

    I assume therefore that even though the application was installed within XP Mode it can be launched from either Win-7 or after executing XP Mode?

    Correct, and when you run it from the Windows 7 desktop like that it's
    called seamless mode and all you see is the application's window, not
    the XP desktop.
     
    To get a little technical, it uses a Remote desktop extension called
    RAIL to display the app window on the Windows 7 desktop.

    Bob,

    One oddity I have noticed. Why does XP Mode assign a Default Gateway that is clearly incorrect for our network?

    Win-7 (and the rest of the network) are using 192.168.x.1. XP Mode is assigning 192.168.131.254.

    Any reason for this? I would assume I can assign a Static to XP Mode even though it defaults to DHCP?

    That would be because you have the network settings for the VM set to
    "Shared networking (NAT)", and that basically routes all traffic through
    a NAT'd proxy server or router sitting in the network stack on the host
    computer.
     
    You couldn't assign an IP address in your range with the NIC set like
    that because it really isn't sitting on your physical LAN, it's sitting
    on a LAN inside the host.
     
    What you need to do is go into the settings for the VM, select
    "networking" on the left, then if you just have 1 adapter in the
    settings, pull down the menu that says shared networking now and select
    your physical NIC on the host.  Then the VM will grab an address from
    your real DHCP server, or you can assign a static number on your subnet.

    The host only has one NIC and is on a static address. Will the VM still pull one from DHCP?

    That pretty much depends on your DHCP server's setup -- if it can assign

    Bob,

    Making the change in Settings and using DHCP for the VM did in fact allow the system to see the network resources. However, assigning a static IP would not work, telling me in so many words that the Domain was not available.

    I can't lose too much sleep over it because this is a Workgroup environment with a PDC so things do not always function as they should. However, if something is standing out in a glaring fashion re the static not working, by all means pass it along.

    I'm back, lol. Seriously though, I've had a question posed to me that I wanted to bounce off of you.

    When running an application in XP Mode can a call be made to an application in Windows-7?

    The only way I know of to do it would be via DCOM.  Unless the apps
    were specifically programmed to use DCOM, it isn't something that most
    support.
