Windows XP Mode Virtual PC does not start

Hi,
Windows XP Mode has been working fine on my PC (Windows 7 Ultimate, SP1, x64) for over a year and suddenly it has stopped working. The problem is actually quite weird since I don't receive any error message. Windows XP Mode simply does not power on if I try to double click 'Windows XP Mode' link in Start -> All Programs -> Windows Virtual PC. Nothing just happens. Clicking the 'Windows Virtual PC' link in a same folder does open the Virtual Machines view but when I try to double-click 'Windows XP Mode' from there, still the same issue - nothing happens. Normally "Staring the virtual machine..." window should open...
There shouldn't been any specific changes lately on my computer. If I remember correctly, this problem has started few weeks ago.
Please help, I don't know where to start the troubleshooting...
Thanks in advance!
Best regards,
Toni

Hi,
Since the issue occurred few weeks ago, I suggest performing system restore first.
If it doesn't fix the issue, please open Task Manager and check if vpc.exe exists. If so, please end the process and restart XP Mode for a test.
If the issue persists, please open a command prompt with administrator privileges, then type the following:
vpcwizard.exe /defaultvm
It will start the XP Mode setup. Please create a new XP Mode to check the result.

Hi Niki,
Unfortunately the system restore did not help.
The vpc.exe process does appear to Task Manager when the XP Mode is start. However stopping the process and starting the XP Mode again does not help.
The result is the same when running the command "vpcwizard.exe /defaultvm". Vpc.exe process appears to the Task Manager but the XP Mode still doesn't start.
Best regards,
Toni

Hi,
Did you make any changes before the issue occurred? Please perform clean boot to avoid any third party software confliction. If there is a Fixcamera.exe process running in task manager, please end it.
Here is a similar case for reference. It is caused by USB device (webcam)
If the issue persists, I suggest reinstalling Windows XP Mode for a test.
Uninstall XP mode

Reinstall XP mode

Hi,
Windows XP Mode started without problems right after I unplugged my USB webcamera. I will test this more and confirm in the beginning of next week if this was the workaround solution.
The webacam is working just fine and it works also on virtual machines at VMware Player. So if this problem is the webcam, then there is some kind of a bug in Windows XP Mode. It should at least give some error messages at startup which would indicate where the problem is.
Best regards,
Toni

Hi,
Glad to hear you have found the root cause.
It seems the USB web camera conflicts with Windows XP Mode startup process. I will forward this information to the appropriate department through our internal channel. Both the Microsoft Product Team and Development Team will take into consideration all suggestions and feedback for future improvement.
At this time, If you don't mind, I will mark this workaround as "Answered" since it should be helpful for many similar scenarios. . If the issue still persists, please feel free to reply this post directly so we will be notified to follow it up. You can also choose to unmark the answer as you wish.
BTW, we'd love to hear your feedback about the solution. By sharing your experience you can help other community members facing similar problems. Thanks for your understanding and efforts.

Hi Niki,
I have the same issue. I use XPmode to run my quicken software and have important data that I need access to stored here.
In my case the XP mode was working absolutely fine. Then windows auto updates ran. Now XP mode 7 starts up and then just hangs.
If I were to reinstall XP mode would this wipe out my quicken application?
Purely on the basis of observation there seems to be a sudden cluster of these issues being reported on various forums all starting late in January 2012. Have microsoft boobed and done something in the auto update which knocks out XP mode?? If so is there a known solution.
Thanks
From the event logs:-
Could not enable the Integration features for 'Windows XP Mode'. The current mode is - 4. Last Channel start Value - 0x800700E7, Last Disconnect Reason - 0x0, Last Extended Disconnect Reason - 0x0, GHI State of the guest machine - 0x1
Any ideas

Hi,
I have been having problems to start the XP Mode even with the USB camera unplugged. It seems that XP Mode starts randomly and randomly it doesn't.
I have noticed that if computer has started for already something like half an hour ago, then this works better. If I try to start the XP Mode immediately after computer startup then it usually don't work. I have to wait for the OS to "settle down".
Best regards,
Toni
