Logon requires password after changing computer name
I run Windows XP mode in Windows 7 and it works fine. No password is required when I log on the system. However after I change the computer name of XP mode, password is required. The logon message is:
The system could not log you on. Make sure your User name and domain are correct, the type your password again. Letters in passwords must be typed using the correct case.
The user name is XPMuser and I did not set any password or add any user account.
Any help will be appreciated.

You would have set the pasword when configuring XP mode and set the wizard to remember the password (it remembers the computer name of the vm, user name and password), that is why in the next few usages, you were not prompted for password. But when you changed the computer name of xp mode, login fails as the rememberd credentials were (old_xp_modename\XPMUser, password).
You can resolve this in 2 ways:
1. [If you remember the password] Go to settings->Logon credentials, delete the saved credentials, and on starting xp mode again, it will ask you to re-enter user credentials, use new_xp_modename\XPMUser, and the password you entered during xp mode setup, and check 'remember password'. All the next launches of xp mode will now use this new credential for authentication.
2. Change the xp mode's computer name back to the old one. And relaunch xp mode. If you don't remember what was old name of the xp mode vm, go to control panel->User accounts->credential manager. Go to the generic credential section. In the entries in this section, look for an entry that could have been xp mode's computer name, you cana lso expand for more details, if teh entry had XPMUser as username, in all likelyhood, that computername\XPMUser was hte xp mode's old computer name.
Once you login, create a local user account which you can remember, you can set xp mode to login using your own user account, which has permissions to remote desktop into the xp mode.

- Thanks Rashmi, I tried your first solution and it works. Long live Microsoft.
Hi,
When the XP Mode runs for the first time, there will be prompt to let you set a password; and if you have checked the item “Remember credentials (Recommended)”, the credential will be saved and you will not be prompted use name and password in the future when you logon to XP Mode.
If you can remember this password, please try it. Good luck!
